9, for the cheeky coda alone!
A local record dealer, whose wife's name was Pat, once told me that he had made a loop of the aforementioned coda, much to his amusement and her chagrin.

Little baby, go to sleep, the results are in for I Wanna Pick You Up: 0 - 1 vote 2 - 1 vote 3 - 2 votes 5 - 1 votes 6 - 2 votes 7 - 3 votes 8 - 5 votes 9 - 2 votes 10 - 4 votes
About 76% of 21 voters voted 6 or above, but the results are a bit all over the shop! Very innerestin'! and thanks for the candid responses, come as you are!
Ok, buckle your seats, or assume the crash position, Airplane is taxiing out to Runway 24R at LAX, for a 12.30 pm AEST takeoff.

A warm welcome to all passengers aboard QF678, Qantas's Nightflight to Venus, San Bernardino County, California. We'll soon be serving refreshments for the evening, remembering that all Qantas flights after 5pm provide you with a complimentary wine or beer to help you enjoy your journey with us.
We'd like you to rate your AIRPLANE trip via the poll provided before touchdown tomorrow. We also remind all passengers, but specifically Mikie, that snorting lines in the john is strictly prohibited, mainly due to the lack of elbow room and the probability of banging your head on the hand basin after taking a blast.
We look forward to speaking with you again when we prepare for our descent into California.

Airplane gets an 8 from me - lovely singing from Mike who dials back on the camp level he seemed to imbue his mid to late 70s vocals with, but also avoids veering into the self-pastiche vocal territory familiar on myriad post Holland LPs.
Man, Brian really does a good job on those high notes - while not up to his former angelic peaks, he packs some punch into the delivery.
I've always loved that little Brianesque insight we get in the first verse, where the narrator is initially meditative and in awe of the miniature urban landscape before his omniscient gaze but then is immediately excited that there's only 15 minutes to go!
Personally, I wish they'd faded out on the terminal sound effect after the culmination of the journey ("...can't wait to see her face...) and left us hanging, as the raucous final section is good but not great compared to the preceding observational dialogue and ambience.

Another great slice o’ life. Seems Brian was turning every mundane event in his daily life into a song at this point, and it makes for an utterly charming listen.
I’d never flown in my life at the point I first heard this track (prob around 1981) so it seemed a very exotic lifestyle.
And as mentioned above there’s a gentle, meditative quality to the track … until that rock-out coda. Love it.

I enjoy airplane....I find flying to be all but a relaxing experience, but sometimes throwing on this track helps. It’s a calming tune and the lyrics are relatable enough.
The production shines on this one. Bass synth plays an especially critical role on this one. I enjoy the tag but actually wish they had rocked out a bit harder on it.
8/10

Airplane receives a 6 from me. Mike is too nasal on this one. Another “Slice of Life” tune from Brian.

CX-4 to control tower, CX-4 to control tower, requesting to land at LAX runway 2-9er. Ahh, 10-4, roger out.
Pilot: I can't wait
Co-pilot: Can't wait!
Pilot: To see
Co-pilot: Her face!

"Airplane" - a 10/10 tune with a very uninterested 6/10 of a vocal by Mike. I'm still going to tick the 9 box.
Carl should have sung the lead with Brian, not just the after-thought tag that was put on later. Things got worse when they road tested with the crappy "hippie-dippy" Lloyd flute, and Brian howling at the moon on most nights.
The sun was about to set. The plane's not landing at LAX for Mike, he soon headed East. Brian continued on, working out his next solo record with his brothers. The Stoned Wizards era begins for Brian, Dennis and Carl. Mike formed Celebration, and that's where it should have ended - out on the tarmac.

Hello again passengers, Airplane will be touching down in 15 minutes (ie, the poll will be closed).

AIRPLANE has landed safely but not without a bump or 2. But not everyone will be flying Briways again, 5 of 15 voters will be choosing another Airline (probably whoever Bruce Dickinson is working for).
3 - 1 vote 4 - 1 vote 5 - 3 votes
6 - 1 votes 8 - 3 votes 9 - 4 votes 10 - 2 votes
OK, one more to go for the album proper, get ready for some Woman love!

Laaaaaaarve, is-a Wuh-mnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it a soulful ode to the more capable, more intelligent, more sweet smelling and more pretty segment of our species, or a merely a mild school boyish swipe at Mike Love, made funnier by getting Mike to take the verse lead?
Again, I have no real answer and I hope, as always, we can work towards an answer together.
I give this a low 7 as the performance is generally shoddy bar Al's enthusiastic chant of the playground song section. I'm also always a sucker for Brian drumming, deconstructed clubbing as fine art.
I will say, I used to avoid this one like C-19, but as I've grown a little older and a little bit slower, I have come to appreciate it a lot more.

If not for a ridiculously long disco track and a rap song that was intended for a Simpsons collaboration, Love Is a Woman might be the worst song The Beach Boys ever did.
You know what? It's still in the conversation.

Love is a woman- barely listenable to these ears. My least favorite track on this album. It plods along awkwardly during the verse, and the chorus isn’t gratifying enough to make up for it. I don’t really understand the lyrics. 2/10

I like Love Is A Woman. I’m giving it a 5. I like “Gruff” Brian. I much prefer it to his 80s and 90s voice. Plus I enjoy Al’s countdown. Catchiest part of the song. Best of all, it makes me laugh.

I equate this with a "rolling home drunk from the pub" song – "Luuuuurvv, iss a weeermaaaan…". Bawl it like you mean it!
That line "she fell for all of my tricks" seems like a follow-on from "take it, one little inch at a time now… I guess I've got a way with girls".
So, are you going to tell her she smells good tonight?
