Gotta agree with Alan, Al's voice is great, the sax is atmospheric (did I just type that?) but the backing track sounds like it might have been bought off the shelf from a place that makes backing tracks to sell off the shelf. It just chuggs along aimlessly, lacks energy and direction.
(Better than Gary Numan's version though! Sorry JK…)

On Broadway receives a 7 from me. I like this one quite a bit although it is a tad slow. I speed my file up like 2-3 percent and that improves my listening satisfaction by 50 percent. Love Al’s vocal on this one, as well.

Love Al’s vocal on this one, as well. That is over my pay grade - to speed anything up. I am in awe. That said, it has an underproduced feel - maybe it might have been something for someone in the big band genre like Dick Reynolds to take a swing at. Al's voice is always great - I wonder how Dennis might have handled it - especially live.

I love Al's take on "On Broadway," gets a nine. This one needs to get an official release.

An outtake from the 15 Big Ones sessions in early 1976. It’s kinda devoid of excitement, and it sounds like a cheap band from Gotfuct, Australia hacking it at a wedding. I always thought Al’s vocal sounded good on this though. This is also one of the tracks that needed speed correction to make it right. There's a guy named 'soniclovenoize' who cleaned up and speed-corrected these A/C tracks wonderfully. Worth searching down if you don't have it already.

On broadway - I can’t think of a beach boys recording that I dislike more. Listless vocals featuring a dying cat sax line. Reminiscent of a bad trip. This song makes me uncomfortable and I would rather listen to Smart Girls, Summer of Love, or anything off the country album 0/10 Is this the first zero rating? I laughed out loud when I saw it.

I'm surprised "Lines" got such good results. Glad. I believe it a touching little number, along the lines of "I Went to Sleep". It could have been, but it ain't. Okay, okay, gave it one last try!

Sonic says he did a remix, and did that for "Lines", as well. (ba-boom! for one more try to get everybody to listen). It's the same 3:10 length as the youtube clip. They shut down Broadway for the rest of 2020 earlier this week. Maybe there will be some more virtual recordings from the stars homes. Looks like Al's Beach Boys version is going to get a lot of sevens. I'll ad my 7/10 in a moment. I like the sax riffing. Not sure who it is, there were several players at those sessions. This should have made the cut on 15 Big Ones, but what to remove?

Is this the first zero rating? I laughed out loud when I saw it. It is the first and most likely the last for me at least The first from Barto, but we have had several zilches to-date, a good 3 for Hey Liddle Tomboy, and the Love You cohort copped a few rounds from the old zip gun. Come on, Barto, surely you have one or two more zeros ear-marked for Happy Endings or Lady Liberty?

Horrible wailing sax and boring backing vocals. I don't care for the original or versions of same. I can only award a point each for ACJ's lead and the random drum fills.

On Broadway scrapes in as enjoyable with 11 of 17 (65%) rating 6 and above with most votes falling in the 5/6/7 middle territory, maybe due to low blood sugar. Lucky that K-AL-EL Jardine was there to again save the day, perhaps?

Coming up, Games Two Can Play!

Games Two Can Play is Brian's coy, cheeky and, errr, playful response to the heavy ponderings of Joe South's Games People Play.
While Joe's cynical worldview depicts a decaying society populated by charlatans and decepticons who don't give a da da da da da da da about him, Brian twists the title into a ditty about more earthly pleasures holding the key to freeing one's spirit.
Although recorded 20 October, 1969, the gang dip their paws back into the Wild Honey pot to great effect, equally bolstered by a confident and relaxed sounding Brian obviously enjoying his time at the wheel of a complex and groovey little number. Some cool backing vocals and the insistent organ make for some out of sight listening, man.
That's not to say it's all Chicken and Chitlins' reverberating around this landlocked town, as there is the usual underproduced feel to proceedings, more around some lacking percussion to really glue everything together and tighten things up.
I'm endlessly fascinated by Brian et al's lyrical fantasies about being work-a-day Joe's from a song or two around this period - I Just Got My Pay's train travel and work place bravado, Brian calling himself Mr Businessman - you might be able to take the Bel Air Millionaires out of Hawthorne...etc.
8!

I love songs that mention other songs. And I like Joe's song anyway, with that sitar guitar heavily in attendance.
So really, Brian can't put a foot wrong here.
Ten.

9! This song is good, interesting how Adult/Child was also intended to include a snippet of Brian’s old voice. Love You was well known for that with the track known as Good Time.

Games two can play- it’s pleasant enough but nothing mesmerizing about this one. Not a song I return to very often. 5/10

8. It's great, but so out of place on Adult Child. I vote based on song alone. I tip my hat to you for being able to add more complex factors. I will try to be better.
