I’ll give this an 8, as it is a decent track with nice vocals. Also, why are people so keen on the higher key of It’s Over Now? Brian’s demo is clearly in key with the slower version of the song, therefore that speed must be the correct and therefore true speed. It was obviously made slow for artistic reasons. It isn’t the only song to have this done to it. It may be the "correct" speed -- meaning that's the way the final version is meant to sound. (Like the second half of "Strawberry Fields Forever", which was deliberately slowed down to match the key & tempo of the first half.) But that doesn't necessarily mean it is the "true" speed at which it was actually recorded. (Again, see Strawberry Fields Forever.)
To use another Beach Boys example, the slower version of "Caroline, No" that was released on Pet Sounds is the "correct" speed, but the "true" speed is the slightly faster one on the box set.
At least, that's how I understand the terms "correct" and "true" in this context.
Maybe, but the two released versions, which in my eyes are the official released mixes, both have the track corrected, while MiC also has the vocals corrected. Not fair to compare with either SFF or Caroline No. They were actually released with there “true speed” mixes many years later.

I've seen this issue with bootlegs before, though, where a track on a subsequent boot was corrected or was corrected later for a legit release. Don't ask me to point out which ones were speed corrected, I can't remember, but I know this has happened in the past. Hard to tell if this was an isolated case on Adult Child, if it was intentionally recorded that way - the rest of the album seems OK, but who knows. But the legit release is obviously different.
Caroline No was a different story - that was fully intentional.

Always amused by "A cigarette butt when you throw it in the water goes 'ssst'" coupled with a great bass line earns this song an 8 from me.

Some solid voting in favour of Everybody Wants To Live! netting a Love rating of 81%. The results:
1 - 1 vote 5 - 2 votes
6 - 2 votes 7 - 7 votes 8 - 3 votes 9 - 1 vote
That's it for Side 1 - I'll go flip the disc then que up side 2 for an imminent spin.
Thanks again for playing, some great topics of conversation are springing up!

Today we hoe-down on a mouthful of Shortenin' Bread, Brian's legendary lengthy obsessive foray as infamous as his then little heard Smile efforts.
Where as the Smile sessions beguile and grow over, Shortenin' Bread is not as dripping in mystique and it's new wave/heavy stylings are certainly not as successful as his other obsessions.
This version is apparently derived from an American Spring session way back in '73 and for my money is the best of an inconsistent bunch - the LA rerecording is as limp and vanilla as a white chocolate Frappe (from Gloria Jeans).
Low 7.

Low 7. Agree that the LA version of SB is subpar, but I haven’t heard a version that I like yet by the BBs. Brian’s obsession with the song doesn’t seem to have done him any favours when it comes to recording it – maybe he hears something in his head that he hasn’t managed to communicate on to tape yet. Gonna have to relisten to the boot version right now… it’s one I usually skip. But voted a 4 just as a placeholder th’noo. Sorry to be absent a while - child care and work not sitting together right well right now (thanks coronavirus). Gonna be drifting in and out a few more days.

5. I wish I liked a recording with a mid 70s Brian bass vocal more. The LA version, however, kicks ass!

Much prefer it to the LA version which a) is too long and b) takes up space that would be better occupied by one of the outtakes - any but Calendar Girl, that is. Having said that, it is what it is and I'd be hard pushed to give it more than five. Might have been better on a 15 BO oldies type thing...

Well, let's be hearing it then:
I'm not sure what to think about this (or what score to give it). It lasts less than three minutes but I feel like I've been listening to it all morning.
Is that Carl wrecking his throat? I can never tell who's who, even now.
I can't help but agree with Mr. Smith about it not as dripping in mystique as the Smile sessions.

This will get a 7 from me, it’s a good version of the son5g and in some ways it is actually preferred to the version that appears on LA Light Album.

Definitely prefer this version of shortenin to the LA light album one. Nonetheless, I can only go as high as a 6/10.

These American classics that every kid grew up singing were a huge influence on this body of work no less than Gershwin.

Shortenin’ Bread receives a 3. I like Carl’s vocal, but not much else.

Would be a 5 if not for the three extra points the lore surrounding it confers it. A perfect 8!

I like this version best. 7/10.
"Short'nin' Bread" is really much better
than it gets credit for.
The old Southern' style:

Any song that showcases Carl's gritty growly vocal deserves a listen. If it had the pace of the live version (thanks Dennis!) I'd rate it higher, so for Carl's grit alone a 6.

Shortenin’ Bread - Carl and Brian. Great vocal by Carl as he belts it out with gusto. Brian with his bass vocal counters Carl’s lead. Who’da thunk this was the same guy who did those falsettos in the 60’s? Cigarettes and coke will do that to ya. The thing rocks. This song and "Be My Baby" were Brian’s obsessions for a long, long time. This version hits new heights. A significant number of "Shortenin' Bread" variations exist in the Beach Boys' tape vaults. Mickey Dolenz said that while trippin' on LSD with Brian, Lennon, and Nilsson Schmilsson, he remembers Brian playing "Shortenin' Bread" on the piano over and over. Elton and Iggy Pop were also subjected to an extended, Brian-led singalong of "Shortenin' Bread", and Iggy ran out of the room saying, "I gotta get out of here, man. This guy's nuts!" Alice Cooper recalled that Brian considered "Shortnin' Bread" to be the greatest song ever written, and when he pressed him for an explanation he said, "I don't know, man, it's just the best song ever written." Lesseeeeee. How 'bout an 8!

After slippin' into the kitchen and lifting the lid, we all rated Shortenin' Bread, as follows:
3 - 2 votes 4 - 1 vote 5 - 4 votes
6 - 3 votes 7 - 6 votes 8 - 2 votes 10 - 1 vote
About 63% of our 19 voters dug the tale of woe! But only just, with half the votes lying in the 5/6/7 zone.
Thanks as always for the votes and the chat, and join us soon as we move from a slice of bread to a slice of life with Lines.
