Well, we like as opposed to love this one it seems. While 99% of 18 voters rating 6 or above, it only scraped in as enjoyable with 2/3rds of the population voting 6 or 7: 3 - 1 vote 6 - 6 7 - 6 8 - 3 10 - 2 Stay tuned for the next great installment in our Adult/Child poll. Fabulous comments and contributions as well, thanks for supporting this Thread! Thanks for giving up so much time. Valuable, that. I don't see how this could have made a real album choice when they had so much stronger material to choose from. I wrote up a list today. If they were looking for an old song to fit, I'd go with "Soulful Old Man Sunshine". Carl could have fixed the vocal to his liking. But,I was fine with it as it was. And "New England Waltz" is a must. There is a beautiful core to Adult/Child. My favorite fantasy song-list to play with. More fun than playing with SMiLE tracks.

For 60s Brian work, it’s pretty weak. For 70s output, it’s pretty dreadful. Plods along with banal lyrics and the chorus falls flat.I guess the harmonies are alright. This isn’t music I ever really want to listen to though 3/10 There's an honest outlook, Alan. And a low score to add to your list. From the pooper, Brian Wilson.

Yep, thought it was a great comment - and I manually added the score (our only low rating) as Barto forgot to tick the box - an act which is totally forgivable in these times of uncertainty. It's rough stuff and likely they didn't spend more time than one afternoon on it, which is a shame as there's definitely a great tune in there.

When I bought the box, I couldn't wait to get home and play the Smile stuff - but I soon found I was tending towards the "Landlocked" stuff - there's something as equally fascinating about that little period as the Adult/Child sessions. But yes, stylistically, they're worlds apart with the Landlocked stuff being kind workmanlike stoner tunes, while there's a wordliness to the A/C material, and mixing them up is a little jarring.

Well, It's Over Now.
LOL, not the thread, doods!, gotcha! I'm talkin' 'bout the song for today's discussion, as we near the end of side 1 of the mercurial Adult/Child.
The song itself is has some great ideas and Marilyn's vocal (like any Marilyn appearance) is fabulous - but Carl and Brian are uniformly terrible and the whole thing turns out pretty average for musos of their years and calibre.
Dick Reynolds' arrangement annoys the shit out of me, can't say I'm a huge fan of what he did on the Mom & Pop section of Merry Christmas.
A bit of a coulda/shoulda/woulda outing.
6.

Unlike the esteemed OP, I love the arrangement on this and on "Still I Dream Of It". The synth texture here is exquisite.
Of all Brian's songs, "It's Over Now" epitomizes the darkness closing in on him. A heavy listen, for sure.
Ten.

I’ll give this one a 10, it is quite good and the flanger infused synth returns for a second appearance. Also, I prefer the original lower key, as opposed to the higher key which appears in the Made in California box set.

Not sure what the correct speed/pitch of this one is supposed to be, but the slower/lower one sounds a little more drunk and sleepy than I can handle. Otherwise, it’s a beautiful song. Only problem I’ve always had with this and the others are the big band arrangements.... they sound extremely dated and cliche. ION would probably work great as a semi-exotica tune a la Guess I’m Dumb.

Demo is pretty raw and interesting.
The orchestration is not as Lawrence Welky overpowering. Is Marilyn on this version?

It’s Over Now. Another solid effort and unarguably one of Brian’s best ballads. Sung by Brian, Carl, and Marilyn. It’s sad. Emotionally devastating. Another one with Dick and the orchestra on the backing track. Booted for many years at the wrong speed, the song was speed-corrected for release on the Good Vibrations – 30 Years boxed set. High marks for this one.

It’s over now- beautiful chords, beautiful melody. Love this one. Don’t mind the production at all, I think it sounds really good. 9/10

The MIC "It's Over Now" brings everything, singing and music, to a spot with the best light. A sun catcher. It sparkles over the ocean waters and waves. All of 'em get a 10/10 from me. The demos are rough, it sounds like Brian is writing it as the tape rolls. The arrangements by Dick Reynolds: No way they could ever sound dated. It's like saying The Four Freshmen sound dated. Not in My Little Red Book of Wonderful! I love Dick Reynolds charts. I believe the more one likes acts like The Four Freshmen, the more you enjoy the songs of Brian when he's in this kind of mood. I'm sure it's why I love the Gershwin album so much. Btw -Not to keep beating the dead horse, but it is there, on the Adult/Child boot, that Mike is listed as the co-writer of "H.E.L.P. Is On the Way". Seeing stuff printed on record labels and sleeves burns it into the mental notes of our brain.

Whoa - I didn't see that coming! A whole lotta love for it' over now.
I think most of you must be off your heads, but, I, as always, respect and bow before the love and wishes ye anonymous online posters have expressed (except mfp, I've met him) - it seems this tune has really hit a chord (F#maj9) with many of you as the results are:
3 - 1 vote
6 - 2 votes 8 - 4 votes 9 - 2 votes 10 - 9 votes
Overall, 99% of voters enjoy the track, with an obvious outpouring of unconditional love from half the gang! What a bunch of softies!
Adieu, until next time.

Today's song for Rating and, the best bit, discussion, is Everybody Wants To Live.
I'm going a 7 here - had it been fully realised and polished, an easy 9, but as per a lot of tracks from this era, the pervasive sloppiness to contemporary proceedings mar a potentially solid run of reasonable tracks.
The credits according to Wiki are solely for one Carl B Wilson - in which case, a great tune enriched with the pathos of growing up a Wilson - the line about laughing making you a coward perhaps is echos of Murry. Carl was usually diplomatic about the formative years, being spared the rod (according to the accounts that I can recall) so the lyrics here may be a rare insight into his head.

I’ll give this an 8, as it is a decent track with nice vocals.
Also, why are people so keen on the higher key of It’s Over Now? Brian’s demo is clearly in key with the slower version of the song, therefore that speed must be the correct and therefore true speed. It was obviously made slow for artistic reasons. It isn’t the only song to have this done to it.

Great keyboard textures on this--I love that fruity organ sound, and the synth! The high point for me is when it changes key for the brief if utterly magical instrumental break and all of a sudden there's the next verse! It's wonderful to actually listen to previously half-heard songs like this... Nine.

Everybody wants to live- Maybe there is a good song in here, but I don’t hear it in what’s been released. The lyrics sound like philosophical ramblings of someone who huffed a can of glue and suffered brain damage
1/10

It isn’t the only song to have this done to it. It’s not the key. It’s that it sounds like they slowed down the tape, ruining the vocal sound (I suppose they sped up the tape when recording the vocals?). There may well be an artistic reason for it. Not a great one.

Still sort of in the gospel genre. I like it - maybe could have used a little more polish on the lyrics?

But by the mid 70s, other arrangers from his generation (Jenkins or Riddle, for instance) were doing things that sounded more vibrant than these stock’n trade charts for Adult Child.

This one seems like an unfinished demo with repetitive lines, some of which are ridiculous and don't make sense. Carl, sounding like he just smoked a spliff, sings the lead with Brian and Dennis doing backgrounds. Piano, organ and the farting synth. Crazy humor at the start with the cigarette butt going "Psst" and then a jambalaya of words talking about celebration (or lack thereof) and expecting someone else to take care of the ecology. I don't believe this was submitted as a finished song. A low point on this album.

As said, they are all over the map subject-wise. The backing track gets a 9/10, the lyrics a 6/10 - beefed up for the opening lines. I'm going to tick the 7 box as an overall rating. Sure isn't a song I skip! It's dinnertime here. I'll be back tomorrow to answer Autotune's post. Need to do some research on Gordon Jenkins. He did the standards album in 1973 for Nilsson, and some of Sinatra's Christmas music... that's all I remember off the top of my head.

Brian’s demo is clearly in key with the slower version of the song, therefore that speed must be the correct and therefore true speed. It was obviously made slow for artistic reasons. It isn’t the only song to have this done to it. It may be the "correct" speed -- meaning that's the way the final version is meant to sound. (Like the second half of "Strawberry Fields Forever", which was deliberately slowed down to match the key & tempo of the first half.) But that doesn't necessarily mean it is the "true" speed at which it was actually recorded. (Again, see Strawberry Fields Forever.)
To use another Beach Boys example, the slower version of "Caroline, No" that was released on Pet Sounds is the "correct" speed, but the "true" speed is the slightly faster one on the box set.
At least, that's how I understand the terms "correct" and "true" in this context.
