Other than Brian, who I met before a Pet Sounds Symphony show in 2000, I played keyboards for Wanda Jackson for a few years. That alone would be enough (at one memorable show she sang “Happy Birthday” to me in the middle of the set!) but it also puts me one step from a big chunk of the 50s rock stars like Elvis, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, etc.
And one of the shows we did was the Winter Dance Party, where I met Jerry Allison, the drummer for the Crickets (as a massive Buddy Holly fan it was one of the highlights of my life!), as well as Glenn D. Hardin and the Nelson twins, among others. We also played a show with Cake, if you’re into them.
Lastly, not sure if counts, but I had killer Springsteen seats a few years back and touched his guitar and shook his hand during “10th Ave Freeze Out”, though I wouldn’t say I “met” him!

Good god, man! That's incredible! And performing with Wanda Jackson of "Let's Have A Party" fame too... That must have been a gas. Indeed, lots of great memories. Particularly hanging out before and after shows with her and her late husband, Wendell. Both nice, super cool folks and, as you can imagine, full of great stories. When I told her I was going to have to leave the band because I was moving to Japan, we had a long talk about her experiences there after “Fujiyama Mama” hit. Good times! The last shows I did with her were on the Outlaw Country Cruise a couple of years ago, so met a lot of great musicians there as well, including Steve Earle and Rosie Flores.

Nah, those aren't me. I'm at the far right, just barely snuck into this picture: I found this video where I'm actually in it (due to being at the side of the stage, I rarely seem to make it into photos or video, dangit!):

That's cool, kirkk! It must've been quite a thrill to have a gig like that, and all of the memories you carry with you. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not much of a hand-shaker, but I've met quite a few great basketball players and coaches because of my college and immediately post-college sportswriting. And various (mostly indie) musicians from dabbling there.
The list would include players like Kevin Garnett, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, David Robinson; coaches like Bobby Knight, Clem Haskins, Jerry Tarkanian, Jim Harrick, Bo Ryan, Flip Saunders, Rudy Tomjanovich, Greg Popovich; musicians like members of Belle & Sebastian, the Delgados, of Montreal (a lot), Wilco, and Van Dyke Parks. And in each case, dozens-to-hundreds of people certain obsessives would know but who the general public wouldn't think twice about. Or even once.

As a shy retiring type, I have only shaken hands with one famous person, the English composer Herbert Howells. But I've been one handshake away from several celebrities. (Of course this puts those of you who've met Brian a handshake away from the likes of Elvis!)
The celebrity of which I'm most proud in this regard is Mahatma Gandhi, who my father was introduced to when a child in India.
Howells of course puts me a handshake away from more than one generation of UK composers including Ralph Vaughan Williams.
And a graphic designer friend once introduced me to Gary Lucas at a book launch. Lucas used to play in Captain Beefheart's Magic Band and was even Beefheart's manager for a while.
If there are others, they escape me right now.
I once had the opportunity to get Jonathan Taplin to sign my copy of Barney Hoskyns' book about The Band. It was at a symposium and he was there with his partner. In my usually socially inept fashion I couldn't decide whether I should shake his partner's hand as well so I ended up not shaking his either! If I had, I would have been a handshake way from Dylan as well as The Band...

My brother was fortunate enough to meet an ailing Jet Harris at some kind of bass convention some years back. Being left-handed, I used to enjoy playing Jet's hits on other people's guitars and (on one happy occasion) bass. This was in the '60s.

In addition to Brian, Al, and Blondie (on separate occasions), and quick handshake with Mike at a M&B show, I've had the pleasure of meeting Eric Bloom (BOC), Jim McCarty & Chris Dreja (The Yardbirds), Phil Mogg and Andy Parker (UFO), Mark Farner (Grand Funk), Glenn Hughes, Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson (Rush), Zakk Wylde, KK Downing (Judas Priest), Mark Slaughter, Matt & Gunnar Nelson, Pete Best, Joey Molland (Badfinger), James Hetfield & Jason Newsted (Metallica), and The Darkness.
