Well, maybe he feels he’s better than he’s been given credit for. And he’d probably be right in feeling so.
But then, he’s had a great career and has been able to put his enormous talents to work at a very high gear for many decades.

Seems to me he gets broad credit and praise in the industry. It's just not an industry set up to compensate his style of music and forms of contribution.

You mean economical compensation? I suspect that's part of it. He was tweeting the other day about Randy Newman being worth eighty million dollars. I suppose when you have colleagues who have that amount of money, it's hard to look at what the rest of us might feel is a great deal of reward and not feel a little hard-done-to in comparison. I'm absolutely convinced that VDP has a lot more money than I will ever earn, but I'm equally convinced he's made a great deal less than many people he's worked with.

Those "how-much-is-(your celebrity of choice here)-worth ?" sites are a very poor guide: as Crosby noted, "I'm supposed to be worth $40 million, so why am I driving a nine year old car ?"

You mean economical compensation? Yes, monetary compensation. Although, come to think of it, he was complaining a year ago or so that he had not received a complimentary copy of a Popeye LP reissue, so it may go beyond just points and salaries.

Such predisposition to feel unrecognized is probably in his nature. Now I wonder if his “I got a Volvo out of the deal” famous and oft-repeated quote regarding his Smile (mis)adventure had any warmth to it. Perhaps that too was an expression of bitterness. In the light of his more recents claims about his musical input in BB songs he co-wrote or during their sessions, I’m starting to think the latter is true.

And he's worried about being able to make mortgage payments without being able to tour...man, have you seen the size of his freakin' estate?? Now...I only know from the doc, but from what I've seen, HE DOESN'T NEED A PLACE THAT FREAKIN' BIG just for him, his wife, and his dogs! Maybe it's time to downgrade a bit.

FWIW, when I reached out to him via e-mail and asked him details about the Volvo, he answered politely with no sign of bitterness. This was in 2009.

This sidebar interview with VDP is on topic. "I haven't made a dime, but I'm a winner!"

One would think that he gets a few dimes in royalties for his work on The Bare Necessities alone.

I would imagine that alone, Heroes & Villains being on so many greatest hits compilations, including Sounds Of Summer, which seems to be eternally charting, would give him a nice revenue flow.

One would think that he gets a few dimes in royalties for his work on The Bare Necessities alone. Arrangers tend not to receive royalties for their work unless they're working on a public-domain song. That can vary based on the contract, but given that the Disney corporation has never been notable for generosity with money and credit, and that at the time VDP was just breaking into the industry, I very much doubt he's ever received anything past the initial payment.

Listening to the green vinyl now. It sounds really nice! I was wondering, though, why the hell "My Jeanine" was skipping so much, after I gave the record a cleaning with a brush. Turns out I, uhh...had the up/down lever on the tone arm halfway up. So.....yeah.

My translation from a great Spanish-language interview with VDP from earlier this year. “...the man is an absolute multi-millionaire. He lives in a gated community, has a new wife... He has kids, has a new life. This past association doesn’t mean much to him apparently, and I have no way of getting in touch with him. And the last time I knew from him, it was when [I?] needed liner notes for a record... it cannot be assumed that there is [word missing in original], although there is a perceived friendship. That’s simply natural, because we worked very close to each other in a big brotherhood. Well, now that is lost in him, I don’t know why. But I may be wrong.” laagenda.buenosaires.gob.ar/post/190392418770/m%C3%BAsica-el-amigo-americano

Had a chance to give the three bonus tracks a skim listen this afternoon. Jeez I’m glad they were left off the album first time around.
Love is Here To Stay has to be one of my least favourite BBs-related tracks of all time; will struggle to ever listen to that again. Rhapsody is so inconsequential - pales by comparison to Brian’s solo version of a few years ago. Wonderful World I’m gonna have to relisten (darn kids!).
But Love is Here to Stay? Leaves a bad taste. Perhaps I’ve just worked out why the ESQ online review opted to avoid mentioning them.
