Can any of the techos here explain why Mark applied the Sunset plug-in to tracks recorded at Sunset? Me dumb. Well, to oversimplify, I suspect he liked how it sounded? Unlike the Universal Audio Ocean Way plug in, the Sunset plug in is not necessarily a "re-mic" plug-in, meaning it's best to think of it as a kind of reverb. Obviously, since it's a 50s era live room, it's a fairly moderate room sound, neither overly tight or overly reverberant. So adding a little more of that vibe to tracks recorded in the same facility could certainly just add a little more pleasant ambience to the track.

While subtle as you suggest, I could definitely hear a slight "strengthening" of the sound, like adding a third pass to an already double tracked solo vocal.
Love that song, and hope this is indicative of some things we may hear some day.

Only weird thing is that MrBirdman said he heard the supposed 8-track the other day, so one must wonder what he was actually listening to. Maybe this guy was just playing him the partial vocals mix from PS50, and Birdman had a GRAVE misinterpretation of what it was?

Oh my bad. I thought you said GOOD VIBRATIONS THE 8-TRACK. Turns out we've had Heroes and Villains Parts 1 and 2 all this time!

Sigh - having a busy weekend, so I've only just seen this. And of course, I'm as disappointed as everyone else re: Robert Honablue... but I did have my suspicions that it was a load of nonsense anyway.
Why do people *do* this stuff...?
To answer the tech-y question... the IK plug-in gives you the sound of Sunset's rooms and echo chambers on your computer (or something very like it). So if you're NOT working at Sunset, you can still get that sound even in your home studio. As to why you'd apply that processing to something originally recorded there, there are lots of good reasons. For example, maybe it WAS recorded at Sunset, but very close-miked and dry, and you'd like to add more of the Sunset room vibe... or add the sound of one of the studio's echo chambers to something that was originally recorded 'dry' (ie. which *didn't* originally have the sound of the echo chamber on it). Maybe you'd like to apply the sound of one of the Sunset rooms to one particular overdub instrument at the same time as applying it to another overdub, in the interests of furthering the multitrack illusion that everything was recorded in one room at once... maybe the track was recorded in Sunset Studio 1 but you REALLY like the result of applying the modelled sound of Studio *THREE* to that recording via the plug-in... and the list goes on...
In short (and this is a far from exhaustive list) there could be lots of reasons. But I agree, you might predominantly expect the plug-in to see most use amongst those who can't afford to record at the REAL Sunset, or live too far away from it to make such a trip economical etc etc... rather than on tracks that were originally recorded there. But that said, there would be plenty of good, creative reasons to use the plug-in even on stuff originally recorded there, including perhaps the best one of all... that irrespective of the apparent illogicality of applying the sound of an acoustic space to something originally recorded in that space anyway... you just really like the sound you get when you do that! As someone big in the world of recording once said: "If it sounds right... it IS right".
EDITED TO ADD: Ah, I should have just read aeijtzsche's post and all the others since Friday before I wrote anything back (you guessed it, I didn't) and then typed: "What he said". Or not typed anything at all.
And re: MegaBloodySoddingBirdman: sorry for drawing everyone's attention to what was ultimately a complete waste of everyone's time, and effectively feeding the troll. But you know... I kind of *had* to do it... just in *case*. Y'know...??

Speaking personally, I "wasted" maybe 5 minutes googling and 30 seconds composing an email.

Agree...all avenues should be pursued in the pursuit of the truth! Debunking a myth ASAP is as important as proving a rumor. Maybe not quite as satisfying in this case, but equally important nonetheless!
