Was Al on the original recording of "Luau" at Hite Morgan's and World Pacific? I know he played stand-up bass and sang background on "Surfin'". Luau (the flip side of Surfin' on Candix(2) and the "X" label) was written by Hite Morgan's son Bruce and produced by his ol' man. It's cool to see Al play this rare single 'B' side here.
I guess Al's other son bowed out of the music business after the "California Saga" group went their separate ways?

Yeah this is really a good song the way L plays it with some very nice strumming on his guitar. I find this period of music very strange before Dave joined the band and The Beach Boys found their punk rock sound. In completely different ways both Dave and aL are indispensable to 2 aspects of The Beach Boys. I wish I had a list of exactly what songs on surfer girl and surfin USA feature both Al and Dave performing. I think there are some songs were Dave is on rhythm and Al is on base but I wish I had a list of all the songs that feature both Alan jardeen and David marks performing either vocally or musically on a beach boys song not counting of course these several songs on that's why God-made the radio.

Craig can confirm, but to my best knowledge, Alan's not on Surfin' USA at all, while on Surfer Girl he plays bass on "Boogie Woodie", "Surfer's Rule" & "Catch A Wave" and sings on "In My Room". Does he also sing on "Surfer's Rule" & "Catch A Wave" ? Very probably.

Alan & David were also on the following tracks on Little Deuce Coupe:
Be True To Your School Car Crazy Cutie Cherry, Cherry Coupe Spirit of America No-Go Showboat Custom Machine
... and it's very likely (although currently unproven) that they both played on "Drive-In", when it was the original track for "Little St. Nick"

You know what, I love every beach boys song that has Dave and AL on it. Thank you for the scholarly research. Sunflower you are in for a treat. And this is perhaps the last thing I will say on the subject, but the professor was famous for believing that nothing in the world could bring him happiness except a reunion on stage of all 5 surviving beach boys. The professor was wrong. And perhaps it was the effect of sitting in the front row and really being connected to the show, but I enjoyed this performance much more than the 2 times I saw Brian, one of which was with Al, and the 1 time that I saw Mike and Bruce. I'm sure it was the proximity of being in the front row and being asked to sing along and to be physically part of the experience , but there was some degree of authenticity and simple poignancy in Al's show that was very different from the polish of the scholarly beach boy orchestra that backs up Brian and also of the particular kind of polish that Mike and Bruce put on their shows. I am sorry if I'm not expressing this so well but perhaps custom machine can help me out here. Professor, your descriptions of Al’s show at the Belly Up were superb. I loved the laid-back casual atmosphere, which was enhanced by taking place in a relatively small, intimate venue. Certainly being right in front of the stage, which was at eye level, was an enjoyment enhancing factor, but I’d say just about everyone in the audience was very enthusiastic about the show. Here’s a photo of Al on standup bass along with Debbie and Matt. Their voices really blended nicely.

Was really looking forward to seeing Al's trio across the river in Council Bluffs, IA, which would have been two nights ago. Of course, plans were changed a month or so back. Maybe one day!

Just curious but is there any reason some people call him Alan rather than Al? Does he prefer one over the other?

Can't speak for anyone else here, but I find "Mr. Jardine" to be a tad too formal...

I saw an article where he expressed a preference for "Alan" in one of the teen fan mags way back in the mid-'60s. And Carl called him "Alan."
