You're never too late to the game, sir. I myself only know Emitt Rhodes as a name, although one often mentioned in hushed whispers. Prompted by your post, I'll give his 1970 official debut a listen in the coming days. What message boards aren't good for! jk, I am quite sure you'll enjoy all his albums. Just the fact he played all the instruments and performed all the vocal parts himself, and recorded it all in a garage out back his folks' home (except for his last album) in Hawthorne, California makes it an incredible listening experience. He remained a resident of Hawthorne all his life. In fact he purchased the house opposite his parents' home. Yes, you are right. It is never really too late, is it? I've just listened to his self-titled debut. Wonderful stuff, but I'll leave it at that one album. For better or for worse, this is my standard tactic, with the limitless ocean of music out there still waiting to be heard. Thanks for the heads up, Dave.

Hi, A. Well, I gave Mr M a listen. I guess I'm just not an ear-candy person.

Originally I thought this was filler but i took a more in depth listen and now it’s one of my favorite tracks by Beck! From what the story goes the track was meant to be a big double drumming song but the original lyrics and melody were not good and Beck didn’t want to leave it behind so he (very quickly) rewrote it and it became arguably one of his best works! Enjoy!

Today (December 5) is the tenth anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s death. He died one day before his 92nd birthday. So I’ve been thinking of this wonderful man and playing his music. My friend and her husband travel all around the world. They are just finishing exploring a number of small countries in the Middle East . One day she posted about going to a Souk. Being a Brubeck fan I immediately thought of Le Souk, a wonderful Brubeck/Desmond composition that’s on their Jazz Goes to College lp. It’s one of my very favorites from the pre Classic Quartet period. Highly recommended! (Am probably going to get a laptop to finally be able to post links to the music videos )

I hope you get your laptop. In the meantime, it's a pleasure to link the tracks you recommend. Dave's really cooking here! The first CD I ever purchased was Dave Brubeck's 𝑄𝑢𝑖𝑒𝑡 𝐴𝑠 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑀𝑜𝑜𝑛. It came out in the late 80's and was a soundtrack to a Peanuts/Charlie Brown special at the time. Although this album probably isn't among his greatest works, it's still a damn good time. Brubeck is in top form as usual but the real star of the show is his woodwind player Bobby Militello. The guy is a monster on both flute and saxophone. Listen to him tear up "Bicycle Built For Two" or their uptown take on "Linus & Lucy". There's a pretty good cover of "When You Wish Upon A Star" on here too. I still bring this album out from time to time. music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nqBZvb5YXtX-gYydUlfC7KgZl_74BY3WU&feature=share

for this day:
also, this song popped into my head when writing in the 4th anniversary thread. It was so strange to log on to the old site, and it was just gone... So, we started posting to each other at Hoffman's, and this place was born.

It's that day again, folks. Let's hope the album title is a word that will mean nothing to future generations.

With all this talk about David Gates, it's interesting to recall that he produced Captain Beefheart's first two singles, a low-end-heavy take on Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy"… …and a Gates composition, "Moonchild", a much stranger track on which Gates plays slide guitar: I remember being taken aback when I first heard "Moonchild" on John Peel's show in 1968, the year it was released as a 45 although it had been recorded in 1966 along with "Diddy Wah Diddy". I find it hard to believe it reached #61 on the UK charts but there you are. Those strokes on the gong are really cool.

Today is the birthday of my pen pal of long-standing, a huge AJ and U2 fan who passed away two years ago. Whenever she was upset about anything, she used to take a "Feel Flows" moment -- as I am doing now on her behalf. Slaap zacht, lieve vriendin van mij.

"Ultraviolet (Light My Way)" reminds me of a time with my late pen pal, a massive U2 fan, when we reconnected after a brief glitch in our friendship. (In fact, it was the previous track on Achtung Baby, "Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World", that prompted me to take action.) I'm linking it now for a good friend who is hurting. It needs to be played loud: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraviolet_(Light_My_Way)

This astonishing performance by Janis Joplin is in memory of a friend who recently passed and as a prayer for a musical colleague who is not well right now. The friend was a major fan and the colleague has a not dissimilar voice (and repertoire): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Brother_and_the_Holding_Company

Neil being too cleaver, or usual for him. Reminds me of Mark Hollis in his Talk Talk years.

Thomas is doing one of his facebook live shows this Week-end, focusing on George "the Birthday Boy" Harrison. A not to miss date. Sunday 26 February. East Coast time is around 3pm.
That unavailable video (happens sometimes) is a beyond excellent Pugwash version of "In My Own Time" from Bee Gees 1st.
