Sabbath all the way. They invented a whole genre - heavy metal. And, they excelled at it with their great albums of the 70s with the original band, and managed to reinvent themselves in the early 80s with Ronnie James Dio on vocals.

I originally voted Mac but after kds’ fervent defense of the alternative I’m going to plead ignorance and sit this round out

Van Halen. Def Leppard released some solid albums, but Van Halen reinvented guitar rock.

This was a tough choice; two-three decades ago these two bands were among my favorites. But as I've gotten older, Leppard has fallen by the wayside for me, while VH--particularly early VH--has maintained classic rock status for me. I'll always love the garage-band-y sound of the first few albums (before the synths).

I voted for Def Leppard. Hysteria is one of my favorite albums of all time. It's pretty much like a greatest hits album. Rocket, Love Bites, Animal, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Armageddon It, it's just an amazing album and also Pyromania which had Foolin', Photograph and Rock Of Ages, Def Leppard were great, the shouty harmonies sounded fantastic. Don't get me wrong, Van Halen are also fantastic. I really like Runnin With The Devil and Dance The Night away, but Def Leppard for me are one of the best bands of the 80's and I was happy to see them inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame earlier this year!!

I definitely do not care about the either (apathy towards hard rock/heavy metal) but tell ya what - I really-really-really-really-really like David Lee Roth's fantastic "Just A Gigolo" rendition. Best JAG rendition to date.

Another tough choice. Making me think here! I give Petty & the Heartbreakers the edge, due mainly to the fact that they were pretty consistent over their career. Aerosmith had a few wanky eras, one example being the late 70s.

Even though they were more overplayed than Petty, I think Aerosmith has a strong catalog.

Easy choice for me - The Heartbreakers. Their late '70s/early '80s concerts were fantastic. One of the ones I saw at the Cow Palace had Stevie Nicks doing duets.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers win 5-1 over Aerosmith. Our final battle of round one is Pink Floyd vs AC/DC

AC/DC are a great band, but they're up against Pink Floyd this time around.

Pink Floyd win the final match of round one, 6-0 over AC/DC. The points table and the beginning of round two will come later. Thanks for all that voted on round one

I'm confused. Every band from Round One moved on?

The Stones may earn a few points for longevity, but they're not The Beatles.

The Stones may earn a few points for longevity, but they're not The Beatles. They stuck it out for 50 years longer - and, years ago I might not have had that opinion, but I think that over time - their work has eclipsed The Beatles. I may be in the minority but that is 100% ok!

The one area The Stones have them beat is on the stage.

Their public appearances were rare and mostly far-flung. The Stones still are bringing it to the fans. I would like to see Ringo perform. I did catch Blondie Chaplin with The Stones - a treat.

I'll be seeing Ringo in the summer of 2020. But, I'm voting for The Beatles because I feel their catalog is stronger, not so much for stage personna, public appearances, or the fact that The Beatles didn't carry on for an additional half century.
