Last night I enjoyed a Milk Stout from the Black Sheep brewery in Masham, Yorkshire - very rich but not too sweet; I’ll be having more when back in Yorkshire.
Finished the night with a small dram of Laphroig Lore, which has to be one of the nicest whiskies I’ve ever tasted. Very peaty but not overpowering. Still, everyone in the room could smell it, which amused me!

Ed has cut down considerably, but will be hoping for some Castle Eden, Sam Smith's Old Brewery Bitter and Some Theakston's Best before the weekend's out

Before we flew back home from Cape Verde in November, we were presented with a gift of home-brewed ponche (read about it here), regrettably in a plastic Pepsi-Cola bottle. It's a great beverage of an evening but one small glass is quite enough! Many years ago, shortly after I’d joined the staff of a U.K. hiking magazine, I joined a press trip to Ireland organised by (what was then) the Outdoor Writers Guild. We were all billeted to different accommodation providers for the duration and, as we were out in the sticks and some miles from any pubs or restaurants, they also provided our breakfasts and evening meals. The farmhouse bungalow I and two or three others were in didn’t have a licence to serve alcoholic drinks so we’d usually stock up on bottles of Guinness (what else?) before returning there each evening. We soon got friendly with our elderly hosts and always invited them to join us for a drink after our evening meal. On the last evening, after dinner and after we’d started on the beers, the lady asked us if we’d “like to try a drop of the potcheen?” Good God, did I really look so wet behind the ears back then (approx 1994) that she really had to ask? Anyway, she disappeared briefly into the pantry and emerged with a lemonade bottle three-quarters full of a clear liquid that wasn’t lemonade. I was keen to try even though I expected it to take out the back of my throat and render me blind for the rest of my time. But actually it was the smoothest, warmest drop of spirit I’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling. Not everyone had a drop but I’m so glad I did. I’d love to find a supply of that stuff but I was too wet behind the ears to ask for contact details of the local distiller.

Hotter than a dog’s box down here in Melbourne town today (42 degrees CELSIUS!), thus sat in the spa drinking Grolsch Lager (mmmmalted barley, drool). Moving onto Stollie-bollies as the suns set - however, not using Stollie, but a Free Trade certified Vodka made from QUINOA yes you read that right. Smoothest Vodka I’ve ever downed within my humble budget; good enough to swig neat (on ice) and offers a vaguely nutty taste and a medium mouth feel. Cranked out by the Frogs, so I imagine widely available on the continent.

Anyone have any ideas for what to do with a bottle of salted caramel flavoured whisky? Besides chuck it in the garbage, I mean. It was a Christmas gift. I had a taste of it and it's sickeningly sweet, instant headache material. I like whisky a lot, but this is 10 different kinds of nope. Still, I'd hate to waste it. And it's already open so I can't re-gift. Could you use it with coffee and maybe whipped cream on top as a dessert drink?

I drink my coffee black but perhaps something to consider for when company is over Now you have me thinking it might be good on pancakes, LOL. Maybe on a non-work day - or on French Toast late at night? Liquor on pancakes?

I'd hate to do anything that processes the alcohol out of it, that defeats the purpose Definitely - I would try the hot coffee and whipped cream. It would smell delish and your company would think you were a genius.

And it's already open so I can't re-gift. Add it to some homemade marmalade, or similar jam/preserve. Now that I’m officially middle aged I make marmalade two or theee times a year and usually include a whisky marmalade - just add a generous splash per jar-full to the mix and stir in very well before putting in the jars. Never waste a good whisky for this - yours sounds perfect! Steph suggests adding it to a Christmas pudding (make it now for this coming December). You could also soak raisins or grain in it for a couple of days then feed those raisins or grain to wild wood pigeons; when the wood pigeons get tipsy, catch them, wring their necks, pluck and dress them and add them to a game pie. Delicious.

No need to add pectin to marmalade, the oranges have enough natural pectin content. They don’t, however, have any natural whisky content so just add a generous splash to the pan before jarring.

A bit pricey for everyday quaffing ($30 AU), but a bargain for those looking for that mid point between lighter fluid and fellatio.

Am very impressed that no one on this board has had a drink for over a year. Raise your glasses and toast Endless Harmony and abstinence! Mate of mine is having a beer named in honour of the film's he's been making about the Lake District. The name hasn't been revealed yet, but keep an eye out for it if you visit the Lakes in May or there after.

LOL, I’m on a charity kick for a fund-raiser called Feb Fast.
You abstain for the month of Feb, and get people to pay for the pleasure of watching you go through the gamut of emotions and reactions from despair, loneliness, paranoia, suicidal contmplations, the shakes, the sweats, the screaming abdabs - all of which subside by morning tea of Day 1.

The back room of The Station East, where I spent a portion of Saturday night - of course, it was busier then... Largely Hadrian and Border beers - and rather good. The Central - across the road from Station East. Neat building, but the pub's hasn't been looked after and has gone to seed. The beer I had was far too citrusy for my taste.

Not a fan of this trendy citrusy beers. Over-hopped. I like ‘em dark and malty. But what I crave is a good old fashioned bitter, like what I was weaned on. But these days that seems to be the beer equivalent of vanilla – everything has to be ponced up these days and more thought goes into a beer’s name than just getting the basics right. I must be getting old. And I have a traditional beard, not a hipster beard.

Me too. So, John, will you risk the pub or do you stay at home? My last night in my local was a week ago - currently isolating as my son and I have had a cough. The coughs’re better but the isolation goes on until next week on new advice. Bottle of San Miguel tonight, after tea; I know where I’m going, going straight ahead, down into a bottle of San Miguel. What about you Ed? Propping up the local hospitality industry or buying 24 packs of Old Peculiar?

Strangely, I rarely drink at home, except for the occasional (very good) whisky. If I'm out, it'll be 'an old man's pub' so we can hear ourselves and this might be the last week I feel comfortable with this. I don't know though... Hope everything's okay with you.

All our bars have been closed for nearly two weeks now. That said, most Dutch bars don't hold a candle to UK pubs. Oooff! Just when I was looking forward to downing a pint or three (or four) in Blighty next month.
