Sad news of course. Seeing the glass half full.....living to the age of ninety, in the music business in particular, is no small feat. He had a rich full life and won't be forgotten. RIP.

I am feeling really happy that Hal & Brian had a chance to speak. Hal was a great drummer over many genres. Today, I feel like I lost a family member. RIP, Hal Blaine and thank you for the music!

I read several articles about Hal Blaine today and was surprised to read that, due to a lack of work, for a time he worked as a security guard. I just assumed he was always recording or touring with someone. Can you imagine working at the company where Hal was a security guard. I would be spending every spare moment I had talking with him. And I'd bet he wouldn't mind sharing his stories either.

Thanks - though I get the feeling it's been edited - carelessly - from something much longer

Yes, thanks for the links, Emdeeh. The Al chat did seem edited, but I also noticed a link for one that Roger McGuinn called in. Good stuff.
In the main article, there was something very telling: The contributions of the studio players shouldn't be underestimated. Something that made many of the old sixties records have a similar sound. Back then it amazed me that someone like Gary Lewis could sound the same as the Beach Boys. Especially after I saw Lewis and his Playboys live, and they didn't sound nearly as good. It had to be the musicians, because in most cases the writers were different.
Earl Palmer, 2000, to The L.A. Times: "I don't know how many times I've seen an artist go into the studio and have to be guided along by the musicians, because the artists, and even the producers, didn't know what to do." Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler said about the same: "All we would start with was a bunch of chords - we didn't have written arrangements. The musicians routinely came up with things that made those records. If you just play the chords, it's [nothing]. It's how you fill it in - the in between notes, the upbeats, the downbeats, the walk-ups, the walk-downs, the rhythm pattern, that puts the icing on the cake."
And speaking of cake, I have to include Jimmy Webb's quote, "I had not prepared a speech, and I don't know what I said - except that I thanked Hal Blaine.", on winning the Grammy for "Up, Up, and Away". Webb is one of my very favorite writers and arrangers. For him to hand out that kind of compliment means something. Brian's, "Hal taught me a lot, and he had so much to do with our success.", does, too.

At one of the Beach Boys conventions in the Bay Area in the 90’s, Hal Blaine was there. He gave a nice talk, reminiscing about his experiences with Brian Wilson in the studio and his personal friendships with Brian and Dennis. One story was about Brian bringing his gold records over to Hal’s house and hiding them so Hal wouldn’t resist and give them back. Hal and Dennis’ boats were docked fairly close to one another and they partied hearty. The man loved to tell jokes and he had a lot of them! So after his talk at the convention, he took questions from the audience, then sat at a table and autographed his new book. I remember the line of fans took awhile - he was very gracious in taking the time to talk briefly with each individual. Then in the late 90’s, I sent him one of the small booklets that came in the Pet Sounds box and he signed that one and returned it right away. Just a real nice humble guy with forty #1 records under his belt. What a great accomplishment in addition to a full and productive life.

Thanks for posting Sheriff. Makes much more of an impact than a written list. The TV show theme songs add to the vastness of Hal's career, and the GV clip I think would really stand out even to non BB diehards like us because you not only see the great vid of the boys but Hal himself.

Go forward, soldier. I support the guards.

I've been astonished - and deeply gratified - at the level of coverage on mainstream UK media. Wasn't expecting that at all, aside from the dedicated music "press".

Was he jealous?" And Hal's response was, "No. Dennis Wilson was a fine drummer. And while I was making 60 bucks that afternoon in the studio, he was probably making $50,000 or $60,000 that night on the road".

Agree, most of the world has been talking about Hal's passing. I was out earlier today and heard a song I never heard before, by a band from Southern California.
My favorite Sirius channel is Steven Van Zandt's Underground Garage. "Little" Steven's Song of the Week:

The old guard - "The Blue-Blazer Guys" rocked the world for a long while! They created so much of the music I still cherish, to this day. One by one, they will all be missed as their day comes.
