Peter Whitfield reporting for duty. I already know a couple of you on here and suspect that there may be one or two more. Apart from a brief flurry on the BBB Yellow Board last summer, personal circumstances dictated that message boards would become low priority for almost a decade.
I've been a fan of this wonderful band since 1966 when, having been a teenager for a scant few months and spending most of that time fruitlessly searching for a Sloop John B single, I spotted that very song on a strange looking album cover through the dusty window of a tiny record shop nestled in the shadow of Blackpool Tower on England's north west coast. I'd been on holiday there with my family all of fifteen minutes when I managed to blow my entire week's pocket money of thirty shillings on a copy of Pet Sounds. For those who can remember, LPs cost a standard twenty nine shillings and eleven pence back then, meaning that I had left myself with one solitary penny to see me through the rest of the holiday week.
My parents and grandparents hadn't even finished unpacking at our boarding house when I strode through the door and showed them my impulse purchase. My Dad nearly had a dicky fit but thankfully the Bank of Grandma and Grandad financed my way through mostly sunny days at Blackpool Pleasure Beach until I could get home and discover what was in those grooves. Pretty much never been the same since.

Great story - my first LP as well! Glad to see some more BBB here, both with very nice people.

Welcome, Pete!
I enjoyed your story very much. I have a similar one, but about seeing them live for the first time in July 1969. The family was on vacation in Wildwood, New Jersey or as we would say, the “Jersey Shore”. It was a rainy day, so we took a 30 Mile trip north to Atlantic City, and what do I see as we approach the city limits? A billboard advertising “Carl Wilson and The Beach Boys”. I got to see the first show of a two day gig. During the show Carl introduced “Break Away” has their new single. As soon as we returned home, it was off to Woolworth’s to buy the 45.

I loved your story! (And I've learned some new vocabulary - "dicky fit") Welcome aboard!

Message boards, where the old go to grow. I myself was over 60 the first time I joined one. Welcome, Pete.

Cheers Andrew, y'owld git.
You know what they say...all good things come to those who wait.
I'm working on my old hoary story of Doc Landy, JP and me at Stomp '88 if you think people might be interested.
