Brian, in his autobio on page 186, explains how "Vega-Tables" is a Smile recording but "Vegetables" is a Smiley Smile recording. But is this true or is this just another case of a Beach Boy, in this case Brian instead of Mike, claiming material from my old essays as their memories, in this instance, "The Case of the Vagrant Vega-Tables" from 1999. smilealbum.tripod.com/veggie.htmlThings that make you go "hmmmmmmmmm?".

All the pieces were there ? Don't think so - only a quarter of "The Elements" had been recorded and other tracks were far from complete. All the pieces were pretty much there. It depends on which order to want to go by. Brian seemed to have been coming up with an order as he was creating the album, so there are transition pieces for songs like "Heroes and Villains", "Do You Like Worms?", "Cabin Essence" and "The Elements". We're missing some KEY sessions in early January that probably contained more transitions. If we had those sessions, I'd bet we'd be able to piece an outline of the album together. Regarding "The Elements", I think it wasn't really a suite of music like we would've thought. Earth, Water and Air's sections of the suite probably weren't going to be expressed musically like Fire's was. I think if you look at the logic behind Fire's remake, "Fall Breaks and Back to Winter", you can get an idea of what Brian was going for. According to him, "Fall Breaks and Back to Winter" was supposed to represent ALL FOUR seasons. I certainly do not hear all 4 seasons in that song. But going off of that description, you could give "Fall Breaks and Back to Winter" a simpler title like "The Seasons". There may not be a definite 4-part suite, but Brian did have a sense of direction to take the music. "Friday Night" was to come after "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow", so there was some kind of flow he was developing, whether it was a suite or not. Van Dyke thought differently when I asked him how Smile was going to be back in 1966. He told me it was going to be a single album of banded tracks with no crossfades or segues except internally in one track. He didn't say which track... but then I don't think he had to. There's only one it could be.

My wife and I were at a book store in San Francisco today and we stumbled on the book The Greatest Albums You'll Never Hear: Unreleased Records by the World's Greatest Artists by Bruno MacDonald. (I immediately found it to be not reliable because I happened to open to the article on Wicked Lester, which said that Gene Simmons' birth name was Gene Klein...uhhh, no.)
Well, natch, the very first article is about Smile. This is the cover used:
Never saw this cover before. What's the deal with it???
(Man, I can't wait to see how many people respond to this post without trimming it...)

On the back cover of 15 Big Ones, Carl is credited with playing harp on "Back Home."
Uhhh...really?? Harp?? Did Maureen teach him?? Or was it perhaps one of those small handheld harps?? Or did was that "harp" as in "harmonica"

Well, natch, the very first article is about Smile. This is the cover used: It strikes me as being stylistically akin to the Smile Sessions Heroes And Villians animated vid, other than that I’ve got nuthin’.

I may have heard something in the past, but I don't really know. Honestly, I was just guessing. You're right though, it is on "Cottonfields". I wonder who played it? Frank Capp (i.e. Percussion?).
Hey Craig, perhaps you should talk to Alan Boyd about it. I wonder if the master tapes from the sessions reveal who it is??
Boyd might know, as he went through the tapes to create the STEREO Mix some years ago. He may still remember.

Okay, here's one for ya:
Ever notice that since 1990, any CD or intangible reissue of the Surfin' USA album uses the cover from the '80s "budget" release? The giveaway is that they don't list "Stoked" and "Surf Jam" on the cover with the rest of the songs. Why does Capitol keep using the wrong cover? If they don't have a slide copy of the cover art in their archives, well...plenty of copies of the fully intact cover exist -- including mine -- that are in good enough shape to get a high-res picture of and slap on a reissue!

Does anyone still have the Warmth of the Sun podcast series from 2007 saved? It sounds really interesting and all the links are dead. I think I have it saved! Will look for it.

Is there any info for who the musicians are on Our Sweet Love, When Girls Get Together and Break Away? (on a routine Sunflower kick) If I'm not mistaken, those will appear in an upcoming issue of ESQ...

Before 2012, when did Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce perform live together on stage? Which was the last concert with all of them?

I was listening to the 1967 & 1968 CE releases these days and a question came to my mind. About Dennis tracks (but not only..), how is it possible that some of those tracks were buried for 50 years? I mean, has anyone of The Beach Boys ever thought of the existence of those tracks? Maybe they could have tried to rearrange them during the 70s... that's a mistery to me. Think about Dennis in 77/78, he could have said: "Hey 10 years ago or something I remember I wrote something good, let's bring it to light". Tracks like WIBNTLA or Love Affair...

It's widely agreed that The Beach Boys have a genius for recording great music and then burying it in the vaults for decades. It's just the way they are.

What evidence is there for the Good Vibrations backing track being edited together on August 24? If the cello and initial theremin were overdubbed on June 12, wouldn't the track have had to have been assembled before then? Both of those instruments are different performances in each chorus onto the came copied backing track section. There are also slight overlaps where they continue over the edit points. This isn't really an answer, but I wanted to remind that there was an earlier Good Vibrations mix that had the same chorus' with different theremin and cello overdubs on it.

Same cello, different theremin. I kinda like that theremin better... Btw, there's an extra theremin part in the bridge section if you listen closely! It's a very low, sustained bass overdub.
