I thought a book by Marilyn was in the works at one point. Yes, no ? If she paired up with the right author I think it would have the potential to be one of the best insights to Brian and the BB's from a historical standpoint. The stuff from Jodi Gable and Judy Bowles in Murphy's book was outstanding. Maybe she has moved on and has no interest anymore but if Rocky can put his 'tale' out there then a story by Marilyn seems like a no brainer.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that the Beach Boys wanted "Land Ahoy" on the first album, but Capitol didn't think "409" was a strong enough single with which to open Side B, so they removed "Land" and added the sped-up version of "Surfin'." I thought it was in the Our Favorite Recording Sessions book by Stephen McParland, but I glanced through it just now and can't find the relevant quote. Does anyone have a source for this, or did I just imagine it?

Does anyone have info on what order all the Smiley versions of Vegetables and With Me Tonight were recorded in? And where each one was? There are so many dates and variations over a few days I'm kinda confused how the whole thing came together (especially with a lot being pre-home studio). Understanding the short Smile/Smiley transition era's a really fascinating subject to me. So for Vegetables there's the finished version we all know with Brian's bass as the foundation that borrows a couple of sections from the April single, but there's also the unreleased alternate track (covering the whole song) with Brian's detuned piano, organ and a more sloppily played bass part. It sounds less clean and more 'home studio' to me plus there's the presence of the detuned piano and Baldwin. Was this before or after? An odd abandoned attempt to redo it before going back to the bass-only version? Then for With Me Tonight, there's the bass-only version on Hawthorne CA and Sunshine Tomorrow with the Vega-Tables vocal arrangement, the slower upright bass/harpsichord version on the Smile Sessions, and the unreleased faster harpsichord version with Mike singing lead. I'm gonna assume the released album version is from the June 30th session way after the rest. Basically, which version corresponds to each date? Pls halp bump craigslowinski: Any thoughts, sir?

This just popped into my head: is there any record of what Murry thought of Smile ?
Assuming he ever heard any of it, that is...

I remember some quote of Murry comparing Brian to Bach or something (1971 Nolan RS piece?), not sure it was specific to the SMiLE era.

The Gong I'm broken hearted I can't believe My life is ending Cut my hair off, oh I walked in the street I don't feel the same I'm gettin' mad, real mad I gotta cut my hair off I'm real blue Just fall down my house I asked myself, man? How... how can that happen to you? I said I don't know. I really don't know, I... I get up in the morning and... Shucks... I don't know!? I just, well, my pappy [not sure about this] When I'm blowing my cool I do sound like a hickMaybe that's my problem, self destructionJust tearing myself apart, I can't look at [uncertain] it anymore Now wait a minute With every new day there is a new dawn And with every new dawn there is a new day And with every new day, we have another new day So... you know what that means? Yes! It means we have a lot of days A lot of days and we can get to know ourselves As a matter of fact it's all we'll ever get to know Is just ourselves? Mmh!? I read a book[ .] I can't read, my God! What is God? What is... what is read? Read? What was I saying? That's right Ladies and gentlemenI forgot what the hell I came here to talk about Well, I'm ready to do it I'm ready to tell everyone everywhere what's happenin' but actually i think i'm cluttering up someone's echo chamber in this moment Here in the Capitol Studios in Hollywood California I'm, I'm quite famous you know But, if all of you out there Would just for one minute get close Get close to yourself, ask yourself: When is the last time you ever talked to yourself? And really said hey man, what's happenin'? Are you having a good time? Well... if you're having a good time. It's a trip to say: man are you having a good time? but you know what? I don't know what Hi Vale . I've given it a listen and made some changes (in bold type). See what you think.

So, Dennis is singing this using Neil Young's MR SOUL phrasing. It's kind of a soulful rhythm track, too; the verse chord progression is the same as the chorus progression of HOLD ON I'M COMIN'. And, is this song about when he picks up the hitchhikers that eventually leads to him meeting Charles Manson? Dennis may have been the real soul man in the band. The chorus of All I Want To Do borrows heavily from SHAKE A TAIL FEATHER.

I think the quote I was thinking of was Brian explaining to VDP. The closest thing I found was: " 'Pet Sounds is a masterpiece of accomplishment for Brian, ‘ said Murry. ‘The public doesn’t realize it, most of them. But Brian took the masters, a lot of the masters, approached the music in his own way and put a rock and roll beat to it.' ” Murry Wilson Not Bach, not SMiLE, not...what was the question?....

Anyone know where I can find the original 1972 article where the Beach Boys announced Smile would be out later that year? Is it in LLVS somewhere?

Anyone know where I can find the original 1972 article where the Beach Boys announced Smile would be out later that year? Is it in LLVS somewhere? I can't find that article - but I'm sure someone here can. Mike does mention they plan to release it that year on the Wonderful / Don't Worry Bill intro on Endless Harmony. He also mentions in the June 1972 NME interview that they have the rights to it. Its an interesting interview for where the band were at the time, including discussions about whether "its possible to bring two coloured South African musicians into a group essentially built upon the idea of a white High School sound", whether the crowds at shows like the new material, a lot of questions about Bruce leaving, meditation ("Was Bruce into meditiation?"). He ends it with a statement about how the next few years will see the group become more individualistic, "instead of being The Beach Boys we will be Mike Love, Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston"...

Does anyone know if there are any other released versions of ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling’ other than the MIC mix? And speaking of that mix, is it slowed down? Brian’s voice sounds a little unnaturally low.
Would love to hear a backing track if anyone knows of one floating around....
