As the title says, list songs that were covered better by other artists (or the same artist later in their career.)
In my opinion, the best cover of a song ever is The Carpenter's version of A Ticket to Ride. It's a slowed down ballad that makes the track their own as opposed to pointlessly redoing the same thing exactly as the original artist did it. Listening to countless forgotten late 60s albums, you hear a lot of terrible Beatles covers and this is a brief of fresh air in that regard.
The Chordettes did Mr Sandman originally, but I prefer this version by the four aces.
This is a re-recording by the same artist, and blows the original out of the water.

Let's see.................
IMO, every song The Beatles covered is better than the original
I Shot the Sheriff = Eric Clapton > Bob Marley
Diamonds and Rust = Judas Priest > Joan Baez
Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie = Yngwie Malmsteen > ABBA
All Along the Watchtower = Jimi Hendrix > Bob Dylan
You Keep Me Hanging On = Vanilla Fudge > The Supremes
Whiskey in the Jar = Thin Lizzy > Traditional, most famous version by The Dubliners
Hurt = Johnny Cash > NIN

All Along the Watchtower = Jimi Hendrix > Bob Dylan I agree that Hendrix' studio version is better than Dylan's John Wesley Harding version, but Dylan improved the song later on live albums like Before The Flood and even At Budokan. Those live versions have a lot more energy and rock, and I would put them up against Hendrix. But I'm very biased, too.

Speaking of which Mr. Tambourine Man = The Byrds > Dylan

The one that truly grates on me is their version of Chuck's "Roll Over, Beethoven". Talking of The Beatles, no amount of ripe fruit thrown my way (or even threats of violence) will make me prefer their original of "Hey Jude" to Wilson Pickett's transcendent cover. His take on the closing "chant" is one of pop's crowning achievements. The only cover of a Beatles song that I think bests the original is the Joe Cocker version of With a Little Help From My Friends.

There's still time!

I believe that forcing me to listen to Dylan for a week would be a violation of the Geneva Convention. But, thanks for the offer.

Since posts are so thin on the ground in this area of the forum, it makes more sense to unearth this topic than start a new one about covers that will only ever have two posts in it. "Better Than The Original" is going too far in this case but a stupendous if wonderfully understated cover it most certainly is. I heard an a cappella version of the English folk song "Brigg Fair" on the radio this morning and couldn't place the voice. In the end I decided it was female, although it was very deep (much deeper than in this video). Discovering the singer was June Tabor, I looked round for more of her recordings and basically fell in love with her voice. This is Ms Tabor's take on the Airplane's "White Rabbit", one of the OP's favourite songs (makes you wonder what she'd think of this): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Tabor

"You Might Need Somebody" was originally sung in 1980 by one Turley Richards. Of the versions recorded since, Shola Ama's 1997 take is the one for me: There's a cool cover by Elektra of Randy Crawford's 1981 international hit version. Released that same year, it's sung in Estonian ("Keegi" = Somebody). Maybe I'm biased, having visited Estonia three years ago: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Might_Need_Somebody
