Today’s Thomas Edsall column in NYT—almost always worth reading, by the way, as he makes great use of data and diverse sources—discusses in part the same study referenced in The Atlantic above. Beyond the points made before, that study says 18.3% of Democrats and 13.8% of Republicans believe that, if the other party wins in 2020, some violence will be a justified response. The column goes on to quote UCSB anthropology prof John Tooby about the illogic of holding party-line beliefs: “there is no necessary reason why someone’s position on abortion should predict their position on global warming...welfare...school choice...illegal immigration. These are all entirely logically independent, yet there is a natural tendency for alliance gravitation to pull people into sets.” www.nytimes.com/2019/03/13/opinion/hate-politics.html

These are all entirely logically independent, yet there is a natural tendency for alliance gravitation to pull people into sets.” www.nytimes.com/2019/03/13/opinion/hate-politics.htmlHerein lies the problem. This is unprecedented in my lifetime. You accept the election results. Does not matter what office - what county, state, or city. You may not like them but that does not change a thing. There is this false notion that if Trump is impeached - then they will impeach Pence and Pelosi will be prez or that Hill will arise from the ashes and be the savior of man/woman/kind. Violence is never justified and groups who have propagated violence need to be officially designated as domestic terrorists. You shut criminal assaults down - you don't shut speech down. Last week a Canadian Greenpeace executive offered a different position. Patrick Moore. Since Roosevelt, the govt. has managed research - the poor scientists working in colleges and universities are slaves to federal grants. It is known as a scientocracy structure. All you have to do is follow the money - just like Big Med and Big Pharma. Or the telecoms. I don't deny pollution problems for a split second. If humans created it - they can remedy it. They can make things better than they found them if properly motivated. www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2569216/Humans-not-blame-global-warming-says-Greenpeace-founder-Patrick-Moore.htmlPollution is quantifiable. Burn pits by the US military are identifiable, quantifiable, and corrective behavior is in order. Reduce, re-use and re-cycle. Some people make solar collectors out of beer cans. Some run their old diesels from waste oil from restaurants. More corn can be grown to use as car fuel. Brazil was using sugar cane. We can grow plants to help solve the problem. Switch grass, soy, anything that produces oil by-products. The original diesel vehicles made by Rudolph Diesel were made to run on peanut oil - not polluting petrol. Emissions from cars are quantifiable - there is a remedy for that. French fry cars don't pollute. Waste disposal is quantifiable and can be remedied. Each kind - case-by-case. This is about globalizing every thing from building and construction - yes, there are some global standards in construction industries which have slipped into US codes. This whole cap-and-trade is a joke like playing a monopoly game, with chits that you exchange among countries. We need to hold the real polluters accountable by boycotting their goods. That is a capitalist solution - punish the offenders by boycotting - they change their behavior - quickly. You deprive them of "capital" to punish them. No Manolos for them. Can we be smarter? Yes, we can. You don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
