Made in California (1962–2012) is a compilation box set by The Beach Boys, released on August 27, 2013. The set, released through Capitol Records, was designed by Mark London in a form emulating a high school yearbook. The set contains six CDs with tracks that span the band's entire career, including outtakes, demos, B-sides, rarities, alternate takes and versions, plus over 60 previously unreleased. It supersedes the theretofore career-spanning 1993 box set Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of The Beach Boys, which followed a similar premise. Source wikipediaReleased: August 27, 2013

10.
This is a great one. Only disc 6 is worth the price of this boxset, there are gems like "Be With Me (Demo)", "Barnyard Blues" and "My Love Lives On"... and all the rest! Not to forget too WIBNTLA. This was given to me by my wife for Christmas some years ago. I really like it.

Vale - When I scroll on the iPhone to plug in MIC in the car - I go right to Disc 5 from Rhonda live in New Jersey and run it through Disc 6 - one of the best is the instrumental on Don't Go Near the Water. I think it is amazing.

Love the sessions and backing tracks as well. You can hear how the parts were fit into the vocals/instrumental tracks. One of my favorite releases was Stack-O-Tracks. Karaoke before karaoke!

If I had known this set existed when I first starting getting into and buying Beach Boys music a few years ago, it would have been the first thing I bought. Unfortunately, I only found out about it through the BB forums and by then had already invested in so much other BB product that I can't justify buying MiC. But who am I kidding, if I had bought this first I wouldn't have stopped there, so maybe I should just get it already, LOL.

Sunflower - (great name by the way) - I did not get MIC right away but waited until I could get it on eBay - which I did - for about $80 which was a great deal. And I gave it a 10 - so easy to do that!

I'm giving the excellent MiC a 9. I would give it a ten if not for the repetition (a lot of hits, and the Smile section seemed a bit redundant coming two years after the Smile Sessions releases), and the absurdly high price for a six CD set.

It was a lot of money - I did wait to get one less expensive, but there were some good ones as well on the early hits CD's. I really liked Our Car Club, Fallin' in Love and Sound of Free being included. I supposed if you didn't get the big box set - then the Smile tracks would be good to have. I love that era, but I'm not sure I want a steady diet of it. There is so much great stuff from the early 70's as well. BC RF

Though, I would've welcomed some of the later rarities (ie. Problem Child) over some of the more obvious selections.

Who knows - it could end up on a later release.

MiC is the last boxset before the copyright extension releases. Having said that, I'm still confident the next copyright ext. release will be on a boxset!

Right, and I have a feeling that if something didn't make it onto that release, then the best we can hope for in for it to show up in one of those digital only releases.

Recently I read that some boxsets had a faulty disc #4, then Capitol replaced the disc to those who requested it... Anyone of you had that problem?

Yes, each track has 2-3 seconds of silence before it, and was cut off by 2-3 seconds. There was an email address posted on either the Brian Wilson Forum or SSMB back in 2013. I bought the set in 2015, and I was able to get a replacement for the faulty disc.

Yes. The tracks on disc 4 are indexed wrong so that the first few seconds are blank sound. The bad part about it is that the last track "Surf's Up" doesn't fade out all the way, it just ends abruptly. I believe Amazon was replacing those discs for customers but I got mine as a gift so I can't complain about that. The one thing that irks me about this set is the "loudness" factor. "California Girls" in particular just sounded horrible through my speakers. I'm very thankful for the unreleased tracks and the live tracks but I personally think that the 1993 Good Vibrations set the standard for this sort of release. I myself like so many others on this message board would have probably preferred a box set of rarities over yet another greatest hits package. Please keep the copyright extension releases coming!

8. 10 for the music, which is great, 6 for the execution. It doesn't offer as balanced of a picture of the band as the Good Vibrations box did and walks a strange line of career retrospective and pre-copyright extension releases dump.

Ultimately it was the 30th anniversary box set that made me a lifelong fan of the group. That said, this set ain't bad and was a worthy follow-up. Some cool new mixes of some of the songs and including some truly great unreleased tracks that were unearthed such as "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again". Although in some instances it did seem like Mark Linett took a few too many liberties in mixing some of the tracks and was having a little too much fun with Pro-Tools plugins, but at least it provided a new perspective on some of those songs.

I wanted to rate this a 10 for content and presentation. But what good are CDs that won’t play? I rated it a 1. Because, at first I thought it was the fault of my CD player. But I read on the Amazon.com reviews that the last several songs on each CD won’t play. I found this true, and had to switch to streaming on Apple Music to play the darn thing.
That said, I read some reviews that said a lot of the alternate takes were of minimum importance, with “Amusement Parks USA” as an example. Nothing could be further from the truth. I personally think “Let’s take your car and mess around on the rides all day” is monumentally different than “Let’s take your car and mess around at the park all day.” Seriously. This is not satire.

I had a little bit of trouble ripping some tracks to my iPod. I remember it took several attempts to get "Country Air" converted to iTunes before it finally took. For whatever reason that one kept crashing. And I had just purchased that set. 🤷♂️

I never bought this set when released because a) it was expensive and b) I downloaded the new tracks anyway. However, I did find a used copy last year and finally bought the thing and boy am I glad I did! The front design is pretty cheesy but the contents are beautiful with some amazing photos and the yearbook thing is really well done.
As for the music, this is an absolute treasure. Does it one-up the 1993 Good Vibrations box set? I think so. The main draw for me is naturally the previously unreleased stuff and there’s a lot of great music here. I’m not sure if I’ve gotten some sort of severe brain damage from listening too much to Looking Back with Love lately but I love ”Going to the Beach”!
As for rarities, ”It’s a Beautiful Day” is unbelievably great. Hate to admit it but I had never heard that one before and it became an instant favourite. Seriously, it has ”HIT” written all over it. So many hooks and so damn uplifting.
This set is an easy 10 for me.
