I love Zappa. I love the fusion stuff and the vast majority of his work really. However I’m not that keen on the more gross / juvenile lyrics etc of the Flo & Eddie Mothers period.
But yeah, fantastic composer and musician and always a treat to revisit my favourites of his many albums 😊

But yeah, fantastic composer and musician and always a treat to revisit my favourites of his many albums 😊 It seems that Frank Zappa never really stopped doing gross sexual lyrics, even after the Flo & Eddie period. The instrumentals were uniformly great, the vocals, not so much. I can't even list many of the song titles here without being embarrassed.

Here's a performance (21 August 1973 in Stockholm, Sweden) that I used to watch every night for weeks. I still think it's super. As one commenter points out, "There's so much talent on that stage it's ridiculous. Imagine the auditions." That talent being FZ (guitar), Tom Fowler (bass), Bruce Fowler (trombone), Jean-Luc Ponty (violin), Ian Underwood (flute), George Duke (keys), Ruth Underwood (percussion) and Ralph Humphrey (drums):

Regrettably older Zappa had what I call this "midlife crisis" mentality and all this "I have been inside you/You have been inside me" stuff is pretty vomit-worthy. It's such a strange, crass contrast with the incredible musicianship on albums like The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life...

Of course, Frank was a fantastically inventive and technically proficient guitarist, both facets of which can be heard to perfection on his Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar trio of LPs, first released separately in 1981 and then as a box set a year later. From the first LP, the original Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar, here is the stunning title track, which the wiki page tells me is a solo from a performance of "Inca Roads" at London's Hammersmith Odeon in London on 17 February 1979: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shut_Up_%27n_Play_Yer_Guitar

I was reminded of this today. Back in early 1969 I was ridiculed for buying Cruising with Ruben & the Jets (just as people laughed at Trout Mask Replica and Zappa's WOIIFTM when I showed them the covers). "HCIBSAF" made its first appearance on Freak Out!, Frank's 1966 debut with the Mothers -- it was one of the tracks left off the UK release, which whittled down the original double LP to just one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruising_with_Ruben_%26_the_Jets

"Village Of The Sun" is arguably Frank's biggest debt to his younger years. As Zoot Marimba at Hoffman says, it's "an oddly poignant song for someone that openly expressed disgust at sentimentality." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxy_%26_Elsewhere

Frank and Don * extol the virtues (or lack thereof) of one "Willie The Pimp": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Rats* Actually, two Dons: Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart on vocals and Don "Sugarcane" Harris on violin (not to forget Max Bennett on bass and John Guerin on drums)

Fillmore East is the one Zappa album I can’t to listen to all the way through due to having to skip one track over the vomit eating lyrics etc. As I say just too stomach churning / triggering for me at that point 🤢 Recently listened to a bunch of Zappa on a long flight to make the journey more tolerable. Hot Rats / Waka / Wazoo / Overnight / Apostrophe / One Size all in a row. Lovely stuff and I think my fave Zappa albums. Both the Hot Rats Sessions and Waka/Wazoo sets are worth the time for a listen if you can 🙏

I've always had a soft spot for Over-Nite Sensation. "50/50" features one Ricky Lancelotti on outrageous vocals and some mind-bending soloing from George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty and FZ:
