Some of the covers in this list are such a far cry from the originals that the word "cover" almost seems misplaced (of course, others are pale imitations). So please feel free to explain your choices, keeping in mind that in the end it's all about the music. Part 2 will mainly feature songs covered by the Boys on three albums, Christmas, Concert and Party. If I've forgotten anything, please let me know and I'll include it in Part 2.

Isn't Surfin' USA kind of a cover (Chuck Berry - Sweet Little Sixteen) tweaked by Brian?
Lots of votes for sparkling Sloop...

I've felt for a long time if somebody wants to know why or how Brian was a great arranger and producer, this is 'THE' track to show people. It entails everything Brian is known for, instant recognizable sounds, harmonies, different vocal lines, catchy 'hooks', great tones. He takes a song like 'Sloop' which to me, doesn't have a lot of meat on the bone, and turns it from 'B&W' to 'Technicolor and CinemaScope!' He opens the song up and with colors and paints the experience as opposed to just telling about the experience. The song has you hanging right to the end, like an epic adventure you wanna ride. Sonic Bliss all the way with superb vocals from the guys. The live performances never seem to capture that magic for some reason, but the studio recording is masterpiece. In my opinion, it'll always be one of the best things 'The Beach Boys' ever recorded.

I'm not even sure the mods could do that. But I'll give it a try next time round!

Yeah, I only found out when I ran out of selections that there are 5 choices. Certainly needs to be highlighted or acknowledged better.

You really have to make difficult choices. Do you go with performances or how much you love the song. Does a song get points for being on what one considers a Top 5 Beach Boys album?
After plenty of soul searchin': "I'm So Young", "Sloop John B", "I Can Hear Music", "Palisades Park" and "Just Once In My Life" are my top picks for both performance and how much I love the song. All of those are my favorite version of the song and got a box checked.
Using the same parameters, the next three are: "Hushabye", "Do You Wanna Dance?" and since I find it hard to keep my fingers out of the 15 Big Ones pie, "Talk to Me/Tallahassee Lassie". "Talk to Me" is one of my very favorite oldies.

You get 5 choices, brooo. Quite generous of jk! I say you go with ownage - if the BB's make a better fist of the the original (eg, Sloop), it should garner your vote; versus say Rock and Roll Music where the band certainly supplied the if in st iff, and then some!

So, I've gone for:
Their Hearts Were Fulla Spring - essential for this band; I still can't believe a straight ahead studio version nary appeared.
Then I Kissed Her - wicked little take, from the intricate clickety intro through the uhhh/ahhs bouying Al's punchy delivery, sigh...
Sloop John B - the song that broke my otherwise impenetrable tough guy 11 year old exterior on co-purchasing The BB's Greatest Hits with my big sister
I Can Hear Music - Carl's Big Chance: he finally nailed it and continuously hit the heights for a couple of years
Palisades Park - one of the few listenable tunes from the generally deplorable 15 BO's escapade, the laid back arrangement matched with Carl's urgent delivery is quite the mark-hitting treat/defibrillation after suffering through many of 15 BO's challenges.

So, if Make it Big should be on there, how about Kokomo and Somewhere Near Japan?

As well as bold, italic, and what looks like an arial font. I'm putting off getting those "cheater" glasses for as long as possible. 😂

Haha! Tough crowd JK! LOL! Lucky your not the guy putting together a liner notes for a box set together. We all have a wide range of things to 'nit pick' about. We BB fans do have this reputation no? lol

That said, I'm going to do a Stars & Stripes with this poll and leave it at "Vol. 1".

My five are: Why Do Fools Fall In Love Hushabye I’m So Young Sloop John B I Can Hear Music Wow, those are my picks too! WDFFIL out-Spectors Spector (along with He's A Doll); Hushabye and I'm So Young just slay me emotionally; Sloop John B is such an amazing arrangement and is one of several songs that my appreciation for increased hugely after listening to Stack O'Tracks (particularly Let Him Run Wild); and ICHM was my favourite track on my first listen to 20 Golden Greats 47 years ago and has remained my favourite even after the several hundred BB songs I've heard since - and still gives me goosebumps when I hear it - so there might be something in that saying about one's first love.

In almost every case, these 5 remakes are as good or better than the originals. Brian took the Doo Wop songs an arranged them with more modern arrangements. Sloop is just a wonder, both musically and vocally. As for I Can Hear Music, even Ronnie herself has said that the Beach Boys version is the definitive one. Carl did a marvelous job producing and singing on this one.

I went with: Why Do Fools Fall In Love? Sloop John B Then I Kissed Her I Can Hear Music California Dreamin'
'Fools' in it's stereo mix and on headphones is just an aural delight. Brian's falsetto in 64' was just at it's finest and purist. 'California Dreamin' has really changed it's stance on me in recent years, maybe the early versions and poor mix and quality put me off a lot, but after hearing it again since 'Stranger Things' and enjoying it with it's superb film clip, it's gone from being a dormant to an exciting cover I really appreciate now.

My five are: Why Do Fools Fall In Love Hushabye I’m So Young Sloop John B I Can Hear Music
To which I added "I Was Made To Love Her" and "Just Once In My Life", both of which I prefer to the originals. Those three demonstrate to perfection how you can take someone else's song and make it your own -- more than that, make your version the definitive take on that song.
