Here’s a hot take. GV is a better collection than MIC and, I think, is a better showcase of the BB.

I knew I still had my old Press Kit for this. There was not a lot in the copy of the presskit I got. Just a Goldmine article and these two promotional slides.

What was really interesting to me was after the 2-fers and especially after the GV box, the overseas markets now had digital masters for many tracks, several in mono that they didn't have before. Suddenly, there was an onslaught of Greatest Hits packages and other collections, especially in Japan. They put out a singles collection boxset in 1993 that is still one of my faves. It has some mono tracks not available elsewhere. And just to be a little weird, one of my favorite hits CD is THE DUTCH SINGLES collection. It has great sound quality and since different 70's tracks were hits over there, it makes for a different listening experience. They pulled the tracks from the 93 box but also had some not on there. Pick it up if you find it cheap. And also worth noting is that Bluebirds Over The Mountain is that unique “punchy” Dutch mix that until then had only been reissued on the Rarities album. One can find this comp relatively easy overhere, most of the time for at average €5. The single drawn from this comp is hard to find though (a reissue of Tears In The Morning / It’s About Time, which was very successful in The Netherlands in Dec1970/Jan1971, #6).

When I bought my second copy of THE DUTCH SINGLES COLLECTION, the seller also has a copy of the TEARS IN THE MORNING CD. Actually cost me more for that the the DS CD. When I burned a copy of DS to put in my car, I added ITS ABOUT TIME after SAIL ON SAILOR. The BLUEBIRDS track on here is nice and clear. The Dutch version on THE CAPITOL YEARS collection sounds so bad compared to the DS version. And of course EMI in Japan used their CAPITOL YEARS version on several releases in the 90s. Wonder where EMI in the UK got their version for the box. It is out of phase and folded down.
EDIT: If you are interested in a copy of the above CD, here is one for a not TOO bad of a price. It's where I got mine. TEARS IN THE MORNING CD

Book = Great! 31 years on, the contents of my book are moving in an opposite direction to the covers & spine. The tyrrany of age and obsessive page over-flicking! Yeah, I over-flicked the other day, but it had nothing to do with reading material... What, were you gettin' tired cruisin' up down the same old strip and flipping off the other motorists, buddy?

Thanks, Bob!!! Man, those articles were rather weirdly written, and the stuff about "remixes" also a bit weird - some good insights tho.

The only reason I can think of, is because that more punchy mix was made in The Netherlands at the time (they mistakenly misread the info to mix the extra percussion in the background, and instead mixed it equally loud with the track). Which means the "master" (or whatever you call it) that was used for the original Dutch single might still be in the vaults overhere. So they could easily access it. The might not have used the original for the other releases. What's your opinion on the Rarities version?

The RARITIES version of BLUEBIRDS was a great release as it allowed us make the NL release ourselves as well as listen to the overdub track in isolation.

This is very true, and we are very lucky - because whoever thought the NL mix was good to go as a single musta been spending some quality time in one of those Dutch cafes!

As I said earlier, BLUEBIRDS was re-re-released on the CAPITOL YEARS CD set in Japan. Japan then took several tracks from that set and used it on their GOLDEN HITS CD, including BLUEBIRDS. And so what do you find on youtube? Lifted from the CY box for this release, here is BBOTM.

It somehow puts Ed's "screaming" guitar in perspective. The Dutch always were a creative nation.

To echo commenter Blend42: "This is the definitive version of the Mt Vernon & Fairway EP music for me. I prefer it without the narration."

I feel like a mix between the ‘93 set and the recent 2022 mix of the Fairy Tale Music tracks would be the best imo The Mount Vernon theme and Magic Transistor Radio sound best on the ‘93 set. Better Get Back In Bed, I’m the Pied Piper and Radio King Dom sound best on the 2022 set. Better Get Back In Bed especially sounds way better

I re-read an old interview with Mark how they had to track down Wonderful for the box. The only version they had was the one that appeared on the early SMiLE boots. I remember hearing that story from someone involved with tracking it down. It was a quite a treasure hunt.

I think that at some point in the late 1970s or early 1980s somebody (or somebodies) who had access to the Smile tapes [and these include tapes which subsequently vanished] made surreptitious copies of several things, and these are most likely the source of many items which ended up both on various Smile bootlegs and, later, the official 2011 box. The one tape from that era I still wonder about is the January, 1967 Surf's Up (supposedly) 2nd Movement session....was it taped over? Stolen? Misplaced? We probably will never know.

December 18, 1966:
At Columbia studio A in Los Angeles, Brian spends a second day compiling Smile recordings. The contents of this second tape are:
'Prayer' (mix from October 4th) 'Wonderful' (October 6th) 'Cabinessence' (October 11th) 'Cabinessence' (December 6th) 'Child Is Father Of The Man' (October 12th; two versions) 'Do You Like Worms' (October 18th)

Here’s a hot take. GV is a better collection than MIC and, I think, is a better showcase of the BB. Agreed. That 1993 box set cemented my fandom for the band. The only nitpick I'd give is that most of the music on here has been remastered (multiple times) and there are probably better-sounding (and in some cases worse-sounding) releases since this one came out. That said the mastering here is still good.

Would still love to know what happened to the tapes that were to be the basis of the Vigotone box that got busted before release (but after the Heroes & Vibrations "sampler" disc was released)?
Were they seized by the Feds and retained as evidence, and forever languishing in an evidence store? Returned to the record label? Or even returned to the bootlegger, as his/her property but on the undertanding that a release would warrant another trial (assuming there'd been a trial)?

Didn't David Leaf or Brad Elliot mention in the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey Booklet from 1990, that there was a version of Wonderful in the vault with Brian on Harpsichord? Was this the tape without the lead or the Safety that Mark tracked down? Also that Mark Linett 1989 boot that floats around, is that all sourced from the Safety?

I've noted this when it's been posted here before, but these dates aren't correct. In order they were 10/04, 10/06, 10/11, 10/12, 10/13, 10/18. None of it was compiled in December. It's no secret that engineer Tom Murphy made a lot of rough mixes of unreleased material while cataloguing the group's tapes in the late 70s, and it's often from copies of those that bootleg material leaked out over the following decade. That particular Smile reel was stolen, as were a lot of the 1/4" tapes, but Tom thankfully made a safety copy of it that's since been used for official releases.

Didn't David Leaf or Brad Elliot mention in the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey Booklet from 1990, that there was a version of Wonderful in the vault with Brian on Harpsichord? "In the Beach Boys’ vaults, there is a version of this song that features Brian at the harpsichord. It is heartbreakingly beautiful. Even as released, it’s a terrific song, and as you listen to the melody and the skilled lyrics, you can only begin to imagine what this would have sounded like fully produced. Nonetheless, Carl turns in a very touching vocal, and this is one of the best cuts on the record. The bizarre laughing interlude (kind of a higher Beach Boys’ Party!) was an extremely unusual idea, even for 1967". The version that Leaf is talking about here - it's the Smile version, correct? Or something else.
