Good to see The Euclid Surf Band at #81. They have this gorgeous track on The Warmth of the Sun tribute comp, "There's No Surf In Cleveland". Now that's one highly recommended album: One of favorite BB style tracks ever. I still have the 12 inch single from KILT I got after they said they weren't going to play it. My other fave is one that Bruce Johnston tore apart in Rolling Stone as stealing from the Beach Boys, Beach Baby by First Class. Stealing from Sibelius might have been closer to the truth.

There were other Beach Boys songs that would have been better candidates to be disco hits.
Beach Baby was a great track and probably was on the radio during the Endless Summer revival.

Wish I could find that quote from Bruce. It might be in the Byron Priess book.

Probably so, and just saying, I don't mind me a little Disco music here and there. Admittedly, I also didn't grow up through the period where it took over and flooded the market either. I'm not sure it's entirely 'Disco', but something like the 'Stars on 45' release I find fun and enjoyable. I'd love a similar Beach Boys re-imagined version if someone tackled it, using the multi tracks to do it authentically. A whole 'SMiLE' disco themed montage would be way out there! If it's good enough for 'The Singing Nun' or 'Frank Sinatra' to cut Disco records, it's good enough for The Beach Boys.

I'll give it that it's at least a good production but the end result is a shallow, totally misguided exercise in chasing some fleeting commercial success. Chicago tried the same thing on their maligned 13th album with "Street Player" and initially got similar backlash. But at least that song somehow endured and received new life having been sampled quite a bit in other dance/hip-hop tracks over the years and the band has been performing it regularly again off and on for at least the last 10+ years. Kind of surprised that "Here Comes The Night" never enjoyed any kind of revival. You could easily remix it into a more dance/techno/electronic thing with a little tinkering.

As a few folks here are aware - I have a soft spot for Disco HCTN. I like to play it after Alexa starts the Weekend Routine Cheer Friday at 5PM, and dance around the house. It's fun to listen to while I'm cooking. If I'm down, the song lifts me up! I have watched that Midnight Special episode more times than I care to admit. Great to see a three page thread on the song that does not include the bashing of it. Sometimes you just want to have fun.

There were other Beach Boys songs that would have been better candidates to be disco hits. I don't know about that. If anything went hand in hand with "the night", it was disco. (Think Saturday Night Fever.)
