The thread title comes from a Sparks song. Listening to my delightful new discovery, M.I.U., it struck me that there were no drums or rhythmic percussion (or none I could hear) on the closing track, "Winds of Change". I then wondered how many other tracks on official Beach Boys studio albums were in the same boat and came up with this modest list. (I chose to ignore Party!) All comments welcome (corrections, additions, subtractions, hoots of derision etc):
I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man Little Pad* Wind Chimes* Gettin' Hungry* Wonderful* Whistle In* Meant For You Be Still At My Window Lookin' At Tomorrow (A Welfare Song) A Day In The Life Of A Tree Make It Good Cuddle Up I Bet He's Nice Winds Of Change Sumahama Think About The Days
From There To Back Again

I won't state the obvious and list all the acapella tracks.
A further question though. Are the Beach Boys unique in the rock / pop genre for the amount of acapella tracks they put out?

I seem to remember hearing a drum in there somewhere.

Cool topic. I also think Back Again has some drums, around the time of "clouds are breaking".

Does crunching on celery count as percussion? 😂

Some consider the piano a percussion instrument and in I'm Bugged At My Old Man, I'd concur.

I seem to remember hearing a drum in there somewhere. Yup, in the choruses and thereafter.

The original idea was to describe the above list as tracks with instrumental accompaniment that didn't include drums or rhythmic percussion but I inadvertently left that bit out! And yes, they must surely be unique in that respect. I assume it's acceptable, and indeed logical, to disqualify groups like Pentatonix who sing exclusively a cappella. But among bands where instrumental backing is the norm, the Boys reign supreme in the unbacked department.

Are you sure about From There To Back Again? I seem to remember hearing a drum in there somewhere. Yup, in the choruses and thereafter. Interesting, as the song's wiki says nothing about drums or rhythmic percussion and nor does the album's wiki. That said, my ears are of the cheap cloth variety, so I rest my case.

Some consider the piano a percussion instrument and in I'm Bugged At My Old Man, I'd concur. That thought did briefly occur to me. On reflection, though, I'd describe the piano on "IBAMOM" as simply bashing out chords -- it could just as easily have been a guitar!

Does crunching on celery count as percussion? 😂 Wonderful Wind Chimes Whistle In I like it!! Why not? It defines the rhythm. And it sure ain't a wind instrument (well, maybe later on it is)... Thanks for bringing up SS, west. It somehow slipped under my radar (story of my life). To those three I'd like to add "Little Pad" and "Gettin' Hungry".
