Excellent, what's it called? Ha. I love your enthusiasm, BM, but I do believe the idea is to watch the show and find out that way.

It's just that the internet has completely eliminated the element of surprise. End-of-year charts are online before they're broadcast, to give a banal example. It would have been more fun to wait until tonight to discover the identity of the Carl song.

So, obviously only a short snippet of the song, but what do you all think?

So, obviously only a short snippet of the song, but what do you all think? I like it! The chorus is insanely catchy. I love a lot of '80s stuff so the production suits me fine. As Greg says, it has a bit of a "Make It Big" aura about it. Here at just after 1:58:40, for those with no time to watch the whole thing: When, I wonder, are we going to hear the whole thing?

So, obviously only a short snippet of the song, but what do you all think? In the 40 seconds that was only given? Well, shoot! Pretty hard to say a lot..... I expected to hear more, so I was disappointed honestly.

I expected to hear more, so I was disappointed honestly. Very hard to make a proper call but reminded me vaguely of a track on one of Carl’s solo albums… it’ll come back to me. The synths were harsh and could maybe do with toning down but the vocal delivery was great and could maybe do with toning up!

The synths were harsh and could maybe do with toning down but the vocal delivery was great and could maybe do with toning up! Yeah... I mean.... Carl's vocal sounded so great! But there just was not enough to hold onto and grab a hold of to say anything too much. To say based on what was given that it's this 'great lost track' just seems a bit premature to exclaim. At this point in time, I don't think anybody is jumping for other previous things like 'This is Elvis' or 'Here and Now'...

I loved those 40 seconds! Wow that was a tease. Would sure like to hear all of it, and I hope it gets an official release at some point. Thank you to Robert for sharing it. Thanks Matt and Greg, I always enjoy your show 💖

I listen to the snippet like five times… All five times all I could think was… “Isn’t this just a track off one of his solo albums?” It’s absolutely interchangeable with anything off of either of those. Not a bad thing mind you, I mean, Carl sounds just fine, and there’s nothing bad about it, it’s just kind of… there.

Yes...I agree it is nice....but that is what I say about a lot of Carl's material. His two solo albums are 'nice.' Not terrible...not wonderful. It often seems with Carl that we are supposed to just say "he sings so well.' He does but so do a lot of people...I loved Elvis as a young man and he recorded a lot of great vocals but often (especially in the 'movie years') he sang an incredible vocal on a mediocre song or was the only decent thing on a bad production. Carl seemed to love that MOR Yacht rock...but I often find it kind of bland. What I mean is that-Dennis's voice wasn't as good as Carl's but he sang with more feeling...Carl sings in a very pretty way but often doesn't move me. However, he was the glue that held the whole thing together-as witnessed by the fact that it all went to hell as soon as he was gone.

The song snippet did nothing for me and I am a big fan of Carl’s. I tend agree with Ian’s assessment. Sometimes there is a reason why songs remain in the can.

I have the entire demo of "You Oughta' Know." I feel pretty secure in saying that if Carl had decided to give it a proper release it would more than likely been worked on a bit more.

So, obviously only a short snippet of the song, but what do you all think? It sounds exactly like the kind of super-80's material they had been doing during that period. Not bad but nothing remarkable. Would have found itself a home on any forgettable teen comedy movie from the 80's. Sounds like Carl was providing a scratch vocal as some of the phrasing at the beginning seems a little off. Always cool to hear anything new from the vaults though.
