I seriously can't think of many things less exciting Beach Boys-wise than a report about their kids making music together. I'm a fan of The Beach Boys cuz of The Beach Boys, not cuz of their kids. I'm sure Matt and Christian are wonderful people, but who gives a shit about their music, unless it's in support of their fathers? A perfectly valid opinion, but I guess it's not much different from any other backing band members releasing new material. That would probably be commented on as well. Yep, pretty much this exactly.

Has it been definitively established that this is solo work and not work as part of a project that might involve their fathers and any other of the Beach Boys or performers from The Beach Boys universe? Has this definitely been announced as work written and performed simply by these two sons?
Thank you and pardon me if I missed a beat.

No, it hasn't been announced whether or not they were working on solo or BBs projects.
But I'm inclined to think the latter because in Matthew's post he included #beachboys

Two sons involved ,and maybe having their fathers jump in; maybe good friend Bruce sings a part and old buddy Dave comes in to play some guitar; maybe Uncle Brian shows up for moral support and throws in a couple notes here and there....
We got something close with the Fantastic add some music to your day and maybe something wonderful is brewing here

A perfectly valid opinion, but I guess it's not much different from any other backing band members releasing new material. That would probably be commented on as well. When that was Jeff, the notices were great from the beginning. Remember that. Matt is a good singer, but Jeff was magic on The Beach Boys front line the years he was there. Absolute magic. I cherish the shows I saw with him. He even added to the surfin'/cars carnival of hits. His lead vocals blew the roof off the place. So close to Brian's own. Then, of course, Jeff took that magic to his years in Brian's Band. Brian had his peak solo band in the years Jeff was helping to guide the big fella. Maybe Ike will be releasing something new. I'll give that a listen. He's great, but not from the gene pools of Wilson's, Jardine's, or Love's. I'll give a fair assessment of what Matt offers, as well. First, he has to get it to the airwaves. Has there ever been something that Matt wrote that was released? Something with his dad? Matt was at the 31 May 1992 Concord Pavilion (California) concert and on the " Great Value" Box-set tour. "Hushabye" stood out, but honestly, I sat there wondering why Carl wasn't singing lead on that. No reason was given during the period as to why Jeff wasn't there. I didn't know until years later. Might have been in one of the books, but with The Beach Boys (and others), I have learned not to trust everything I read in books and elsewhere to be true. And let me add, Adrian Baker's comings and goings didn't bother me. He was a good enough player and singer in the times I saw him. Bruce singing anything he wanted to was always welcome. Bruce is a Beach Boy in my book. So are a few others, you know. Not Stamos, but I've said that so many times. It is beyond the scope of what I am saying here to discuss my problems with the group from 1988 to 1992. There was the good and the bad. Brian had highlights that made me happy. Got to hear that little show off upper Market. They had good players, Meros, Carter, Hinsche, Kowalski, and Cannata - who I was surprised they had the chance hire. One of the bad - playing that flaming-fire (literally) garbage dump out in Mountain View. They played Marine World, too. Unbelievable. "Sum, Sum, Summer" is... well, no comment needed for something that bad. At least "Surfin'" had its charms. And, The Beach Boys, all of them, got better fast. By their second album they were a B Grade classic. Took two years to make my Top U.S.A. act. Btw, 15 Big Ones is in my Top 10 Beach Boys records. Some of us love that. I'm told by management I have the right to share my opinions here. This is one, or a few.

Well, so much for the fictive fantasy that Beach Boys themselves would participate. That was a hope and an illusion for sure. But no doubt we will all give a just and proper listen to what they will have produced.

As far as individual Beach Boys go, a Mike Love guest appearance would have been cool and not impossible given that it is his son's record.
And with Matt involved, how much of a stretch would it have been for Al to join the party?
And Bruce, given that he is a bandmate of Christian.

Sam BFC,
Yes this is a very good comment. We have some record of multi-generational Productions from The Beach Boys right? Brian singing with his daughters and Al's sons contributing to the postcard album , so maybe some multi-generational crossover work will provide the historical transition between the Beach Boys and the next generation.
Wonder whatever happened to California saga. Think that Mike had said 10 years ago , "boy California Saga; they can open for the Beach Boys next year," and it seemed like all one big happy family before the tour ended the way that it did.
So yes the idea of the Beach Boys as guest performers on the Next Generation recordings could be a really wonderful experience.

Not sure why Christian and Matt need to be dubbed "next-generation Beach Boys" despite their obvious ties and affiliation towards the band. Perhaps with this solo album Christian is trying to carve his own musical path while simultaneously offering a nod to his father's band. Doesn't mean he's required to completely mimic the Beach Boys' sound in the process.

They are the children of The Beach Boys.

Well, I gave Christian's album the 'minute and a half' each play test. Based on that, it's very generic Pop that is quite listenable. If I was in a dentist chair, and they had music like this there, it would be quite pleasant. Very much background music to me overall, I like his voice and how he can manipulate his range. The songs themselves, I would even say are also 'generic', but I don't mean that in a bad way, but they are pretty 'safe' compositions. It's nice and while it's 'lovely', nothing really sticks out demanding one to listen, and that's Ok, maybe that's not the vibe for the album. I'm sure with a solid listen and some repeat plays, it could become one of your best easy listening spinners for new music. It's worthwhile giving it a chance to see if it suits your ears.

Christian recently appeared on the Surf’s Up podcast, mostly discussing his album. However, he does add some interesting insights into the recent changes in the touring Beach Boys personnel at around the 20 minute mark: on.soundcloud.com/AjURX

I dunno, man - I went the whole hog each play test, and while the songs are alright, the autotuning on the vocals was distracting and unnecessary - Christian has a great voice; I don't know if it was a post-production decision by the label, or a mitigation for a rushed recording schedule. If a stylistic decision, perhaps not the best row to hoe. A pity, as the laid back approach of to songs, with some great high energy rock moments and axe-work, have a lot of potential - there's a good live album in here - marred by the unrequired tech. I enjoy Christian's album a lot!! A nice blend of BBs-reminiscent sounds and a style of his own.
I have some more detailed thoughts regarding specific songs and observations about the production. But I'd like to gather those thoughts more before I make a longer post.
No doubt, Sum-Sum-Summer is the highlight for me!!! I adore this one! Great BBs style song. He definitely channeled his dad with this song! I wish The Beach Boys (or at least Mike & Bruce) could've recorded vocals for this! That would be the icing on the cake!! But Matt Jardine and Christian's voices blending on that song have gotta be the next best thing!!!! It brings a smile to my face that Christian and Matt collaborated. I hope they continue to do so. That would be really cool.
The Beach Boys performed SumSumSummer on the cruise this year. And in the interview it was brought up that they are considering adding it to the Surf Song section of the concert towards the beginning. I would love that. I think it would be so cool for them to play a "second generation Beach Boy" song. No doubt it would fit nicely with the uptempo songs that start the show.
