Somebody posted this video of nearly an hour of a show with the new lineup. It's... not good. I mean, it's only from the first few days of the new people settling in, so *maybe* it'll get better, but it just sounds *bad* a lot of the time. Stiff and awkward drumming -- not Kowalski-bad but not good either -- and dodgy harmonies. Everyone has a bad gig now and then, and a mobile-phone capture of a gig is not going to be the best representation, but... I mean, it's not as embarrassingly bad as the shows from the late nineties or early 00s, but it's not good either. Hm. I think the drummer rocks. The harmonies at least on "Here Today" need to be worked on though...

I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised! I'm enjoying the contributions of the new members.
Jon B's drumming rocks and is very energetic, and John W plays the solos excellently. I think they both meticulously studied John C and Scott's parts.
I'm super enthusiastic about the inclusion of Here Today (in my top ten for sure) and The Warmth Of The Sun. I also like Little Honda being moved to the car medley, making it longer. That section is always one of the show's highlights.
Mike and Bruce are still doing their thing. I think that's amazing.
I think this is still an excellent, top tier BBs lineup. The band sounds great to me. Certainly better than early 81-82 or 98-99.
I think Ike is and will continue to do a nice job as musical director. And I trust Mike.
I stand by all of my praise, but I will add that it will take adjustment to get used to seeing the band without Scott and John C. I will miss them for sure. I don't want my compliments of their replacements to be misunderstood. I'm still sad they're gone. But I do really like what Jon B and John W bring to the table. I also noticed it seems like the arrangement on the instrumental bridge has been beefed up to include the original horn parts, presumably covered by Randy on sax and Timmy on synth. It sounded nice in that new video. Ike also sounds FABULOUS on TWOTS!
Very excited to see The BBs this summer!!

Seems okay…. Not earth shattering. Mike’s somewhat flat in places, the falsetto grates in the first couple of songs. Should I persevere?

I'm genuinely glad someone likes them, but that version of "I Get Around", for example, just sounds *painful* (though that's partly Mike, who sounds unusually off-key there). There's nothing at all wrong with John W.'s playing of the guitar parts, but a lot of the harmonies are off and Jon B is far, far too fond of the cymbals, and his timing sounds wooden and flat-footed to me (possibly paying too much attention to a click?) I do hope that people enjoy the gigs, and I also hope that the new lineup starts to gel better to *my* ears. I'll still be going to see them every chance I get, but on that evidence it will be with a lot less enthusiasm than before.

Have to agree with Andrew H here in his assessment. Unless I am completely deluded this sounds absolutely nothing like the show I saw in the Pechanga Casino several weeks ago with Scott and John performing. I have not heard Mike sound so bad in any recent performances. Hope they can right the ship.

Is the drummer very tall or standing behind his kit?

Is the drummer very tall or standing behind his kit? LOL - he's sitting but perched high on his seat maybe. Check out the end of Dance x 3, around the 32 minute mark. You can see him bopping up and down on the seat from time to time (especially the last thwack!)

I went to the Hiawassee show last night. (The YouTube video above is from that show.) It was loud, with rowdy energy from the band.
My take is that adding the new guys has moved the show in a harder rock direction, especially during the instrumental breaks and outros. Jon Bolton was channeling Dennis and Animal (mostly Animal) much of the time. John W. played more like David than Carl for the classic licks and did some shredding as well. Both are accomplished musicians. Vocally, Ike did most of the heavy lifting.

Here is a video of a chunk of songs from the Macon show of a couple of days ago:
It mostly sounds fine, but I'm sure there are some kinks to iron out.

I think they sound great! Maybe it's the positioning of the phone near a speaker, but it seems like the theramin sound on Good Vibrations is louder than usual. Or maybe it's just me. But yeah, Bolton rocks the stage, doesn't he? I think they sound just fine.

This guy here though has his seat turned really high.

I listened to the famous Beach Boys show good timing live album at Knebworth.
With Dennis on the drums this is a real rocking band. I guess there's a difference between orchestral beach boys and rock band Beach boys, and this most recent version of Mike and bruce, is quite rocking, and I guess the same is true when John was on the drums but maybe even more so now.
I think they're trying to get a big sound that can fill the Hollywood Bowl for the upcoming 4th of July shows. You can't do the casino intimate act in a venue like that.
The background vocals / harmonies sound like they need some work and Mike does seem a little off key, I'm not sure, a little flat or sharp on some notes, and I guess maybe this happens to the vocal instrument at a certain age. But a lot to be excited about in the clip that was posted here a while ago. Lots of energy and intensity.

Cowsill just posted this on his FB page:
"Hi you guys and gals. I wanna say I love your loyalties and fandom/friendship over the decades. I’m an elusive private type of person. Still working on that! Lol but I need you all, if you can, to support the change by The Beach Boys, Jon Bolton is a sweet kind and solid drummer. He’s gonna bring some flash and fun to the music. It’s his turn to take the throne! And that’s the new direction John Stamos has in mind for his friends The Beach Boys. It’s all good. If you Love The Beach Boys music, I guarantee it’s still the same songs and it’ll be entertaining! I’m gonna see them in Nashville when they get there. I miss my crew bus family. Love to all of you! Now help me spead that around!!! XOXOXOXO"
WTactualF ? Who made Stamos the band's manager, or gave him any say in, well, anything ? He's nothing but a Dennis wannabe and a piss-poor one at that.
