So, somone out there used an AI program to replace the existing lead on "All I Wanna Do" with Brian. Just one small problem: it sounds nothing like him. Judge for yourself.

Awful. You can hear it "trying" to imitate his articulation on "do." Utterly unfeeling fake performance despite being based on Mike's good lead.

Ah... just had it pointed out to me that it's not a straight replacement but rather someone singing a guide vocal which the AI then attempts (and in this instance fails miserably) to change with Brian's inflections, tone, timbre and the like.

I won’t be surprised when we have near perfect tracks by the end of this year. AI is moving real damn fast.

Based on this (admittedly amatuer and isolated) example, it would have to move at warp speed for that to happen. I remain to be convinced.

The more I think about this, the more I feel that someone as much in the public eye as Mr Cameron should think twice before coming out with stuff like this -- and then choose their words carefully. The above amounts to undiluted scare-mongering, about something that's impossible for the person in the street to put their finger on. (The other reasons for worrying are as plain as a pikestaff.) Voice your concerns about it by all means but this "too late" sh*t is downright irresponsible. Shame on you, Mr C. Rant over.

The enunciation and inflections bear all the hallmarks of a Youtube cover. The AI needs a clean source for the melody, and it's impossible to cleanly isolate Mike's lead on that unless your name begins with "Mark" and ends in "Linett". I think he recorded himself singing the lead vocal as a guide for the program. The only upload I can be sure is based on Beach Boy vocals is the Til I Die demo. That clearly uses the bootlegged acapella snippets with Carl singing isolated.

I think the second track of this AI generation (at 1:30, Show Me Your Secret) is fascinating. It … almost … sounds like it could be a lost track to me (ymmv):

Well Dennis was supposed to sing lead on Good Vibrations... what if... Also, I would love to hear I've Got a Friend!

You guys should try grading papers in the face of AI.

I stick by what I said earlier. However, to get back to the music, let me adapt something AGD said recently about Oasis and The Beatles: I like my Beach Boys straight.

Sorry to go against the consensus, but I think that's amazing.
Never mind All I Wanna Do, set it loose on some Smile tracks!

Right up my street tech wise. I certainly won't pretend to be a coding expert, but I've heard some other examples of things like this, and this is hands down the best I've heard.
So yes, I'm impressed, and yes I think it's amazing.
Ethics, bah. Set it loose on Smile.

I'm a little uneasy about all of this myself, but I must say that it would be interesting to finally hear Dennis vocals on SoS or IJWMFTT...

Wow...to me, it's a dead ringer for 1968 Brian.

I didn't mean anything against the maker, but maybe I should add that I do object to this sort of thing on principle. This is going to change how people listen to music, and not for the better.
And I stand corrected -- I assumed it was based on Mike's lead.

What's important to remember is these sort of ethical objections have been around since the advent of the phonogram, and that each technical advance is usually met with some resistance.
This particular advance has similarities to sampling, which was decried and criticised back in the 80s, only to become standard practice.
I totally understand why people are a bit unnerved by this, but it's just another tool. In the hands of creative people, I can see some interesting things occurring.

It's not the use of AI as a musical tool that unnerves me (there's always that on-and-off knob), it's the runaway implications of AI in general.

Well .. I've steeled myself up to not listening to it at all .. until now. It sounds exactly like what it is. .. Someone impersonating Brian Wilson. Not for me.
