What a voice! And a genuinely nice human being, as well.

Discuss. Looks like nobody knows Al Jardine. For those who have followed him and his career as a BB and a solo artist, with Postcard from California, or work with other artist, and either touring as the Endless Summer Band or the Storytellers Tour - there is a more than a lot to like.

I like the idea of General Al Jardine. Probably save a lot of lives.

*Sigh*
My candidates for General Al Jardine's best vocals are...
Lookin' at Tomorrow His shared lead on All This is That
I also love his singing on Surf's Up - and most things, to be honest. His voice and Carl's comprise the saving grace of SIP.

What do you consider the best lead vocal by Al? Aha! This is the perfect moment to put in a good word for "Feet". Outside the BB? On NPP's "Tell Me Why"--his entry just after the one-minute mark never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

I think it would be best if people didn't troll in this well-meaning topic about Al. He's Beach Boy too. Let's be respectful and nice. Emdeeh filledeplage @everybody else - What do you consider the best lead vocal by Al? To me, it's "I Know There's An Answer". Your turn, folks. BBF - I know of no bad lead from Al. I really love this one, but have not heard it live.

kds Good picks. "Christmas Day" ideally should be in Various Artists-type Christmas collections. Nice to see you like "Beaks Of Eagles" too, many dislike it due to speech bits by Al & Mike. Al's lead is ravishing in TMW. wata @littlesurfer What to you is Al's best lead?

wata What to you is Al's best lead? I can't think of his best lead, because he has been great singer most of the time. (I can assuredly say he is the best beach boy in terms of singing ability as of now) If I had to pick one, however, I'd pick Susie Cincinnati, where Al rocks really well.

wata Excellent choice! "Susie Cincinnati" rules. @littlesurfer Cool, you too like "And Then I Kissed Her"? Everybody says Al's version is inferior than The Crystals. I'm glad you don't think that. Not many fans like "Come Go With Me" either. But you do. Jolly good!

BBfan -- there's a lot of great recorded Al vocals that have already been cited, so I'm going with a live performance that blew me away instead.
The BBs toured with Chicago in 1989 and played Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta that summer. I did not get to see the original Beachago tour in the '70s, so this was my first time seeing them together. The thing that blew me away was Al taking the lead on "Does Anyone Know What Time It Is?" during the joint performance part of the show. It sounded like the song had been written exactly for his voice -- and came as a complete surprise to me.

I think Al is an unbelievable complementary player. He has a remarkable voice, and it has held up better than one would expect of someone his age. He also seems likable, if a little flaky or absent-minded. (He gets his facts, dates, sequences, etc., wrong, for which I don't blame him. But it does happen.)
What I don't like is how his fans paint an unrealistic picture: "his voice hasn't changed a bit! He sings exactly like he did in 1966!" And so on. This, frankly, is not true. It does no favors to the man to lie about him.
But his voice was, and is, wonderful. One of my favorites of his vocals is his "If I Had a Hammer" with Richard Barone. There's a certain charm Al has, a certain something that feels to me indicative of great harmony singers.
His songwriting ... I like it! He's not brilliant, he's not prolific, but he does his thing. If anything, I wish he'd just let it fly and do more.

General Al Jardine! (when did he join the army, exactly??)
His rollalongasingalong style makes me feel happy, even when he's been out doin' in his head.
Can't help but feel sorry for how cold he was in June in Knebworth though (ridiculous weather for the time of year!) - see how red his nose was. You KNOW you want to watch this again!

Al's really cool, agree pendlewitch. You're right, nobody beats him "Help Me Rhonda"-wise. It's really his, yep! Obviously Al's great singer - which do you think is his best lead? If we exclude hits. Tell what he sang that blew you immediately, pendlewitch?

Tell what he sang that blew you immediately, pendlewitch ? Hi BBF, Well, you asked for non-hits, so I had to go and research. I love the following already, which, in some discerning parts of the world, were actually hits! Rhonda, Cotton Fields, H&V, Come go with me, Lady Lynda (but not so swingalongarollalong as the others). Less obvious: School Day (Al's style saves it). And I never knew he sang the lead on Lookin' at Tomorrow (a welfare song), which is fab. I thought it was another member (won't say who, oops!) Hints and tips came from www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/beach-boy-al-jardine-finest-hour/

Al visiting one of his childhood homes, in the Summerville neighborhood of Irondequoit, NY, a suburb of Rochester. He and his family lived there for a few years in the early 1950s.

Always liked Al.
Heard a young child introduced to "Blowin' in the Wind" from Party! She listened and then asked the title of the song. I explained that it was written by Bob Dylan ("Bob Dylan!? He was in 'We Are the World!'") and that it was sung here by Al Jardine.
Just an anecdote, but it is a reminder that Al brought it some material and influences that no one else would have brought in. He's a major contributor to the BB story, and he seems to comport himself well as a public figure. I have no problem with Al and admire a bunch of his leads.
Plus that suit at Knebworth!
