Hawthorne, CA, subtitled Birthplace of a Musical Legacy, is the second anthology collection by The Beach Boys and released through Capitol Records. A double-compact disc, it was put together after the positive reaction to the Endless Harmony Soundtrack to give hardcore Beach Boys fans more rarities and alternate versions of well-known songs. The collection features spoken word tracks from different band members recorded throughout the 1990s during production of the Endless Harmony documentary, as well as a clip from a 1969 radio show. Home recordings dating back to 1960 and a backing track from 1973's "Sail On, Sailor" were also included. It never charted in either the United States or the United Kingdom, and it is currently out of print. Source wikipediaReleased: 22 May 2001

8. I bought this one some years after its release, I don't know why... I remember one day I went to an important record fair near where I live and I saw it on exhibitor's bench and I bought it used for a cheap price. After listened to it I asked myself why I did not buy it before... I think disc 2 is better, the a cappella version of "Can't Wait Too Long" is brilliant and Dennis' "A Time To Live In Dreams" is another great piece of music by this talented guy. About disc 1 I enjoyed the studio version of "Devoted To You" and the vocal track of "Kiss Me Baby".
I'll be weird but my favorite is "Carl Wilson - Coda".. those harmonies in the background, the sound of the sea and Carl speaking from his heart.. so sincere...

I just recently listened to this again. I bought my copy in 2001 when I came across it in a record store and didn't even know that it existed. I was blown away by stereo mixes like "Heroes & Villains" and "Let The Wind Blow". I'd give it a 10 but had to dock 2 points because of an EXTENDED mix of "Barbara Ann", the one song I wish never existed.

If you play a cd of Beach Boys studio session and then you do things in your home it’s like to be there... I don’t know how to explain that..

I'm another who randomly stumbled on this release in the store back in '01. Apparently there was zero promotion for it. I looked over the track list and became that kid in a candy store. The standouts for me were the first time stereo mixes. SOLD!
Once I got home with it, the rest of my afternoon was shot, listening through it with headphones, and then skipping around to tracks I had to hear again right away. The biggest revolution to me was the stereo mix of Let the Wind Blow. After believing for so many years that Wild Honey was an album that could never be remixed, I had given up hope, but this restored my faith. And of course, 16 years later that faith paid off!
I remember a discussion regarding the cover photo over on PSF. It's a cool concept, but on close examination it's quite awkward. I remember commenting on how the car looks like a lowrider, as the Boys (especially Brian) seem to tower over it. Also, Dennis appears to be mowing an already cut lawn, and with all the force he's pushing into that mower, he's about to ram that classic automobile!
Of course I know it's all Photoshopped!

7.5. For the time it was amazing, but the recent glut of copyright extension releases are probably going to make this one seem irrelevant by comparison.

[my review from PSF]
This was quite something when it came out. I'm surprised it didn't sell better. I had to knock it down to 8, though: - A few of the tracks have digital distortion going, as if they're sampled at a low rate. I don't think I noticed that on the songs so much, but on some of the spoken word tracks for sure. - "Heroes and Villains" has some sync issues. Still, it was mind-blowing to hear that thing in stereo. Newer stereo mixes are much better though. BTW, I theorize that this started life as an intended soundtrack to An American Family but ended up evolving into what it became. Check it out: - "The Lord's Prayer," "Shut Down" live -- both in the movie - "Forever" vocals only -- Dennis's vocal track is used in the movie - "Let The Wind Blow" is in the movie as well, albeit just Brian's vocal track - "Can't Wait Too Long" a cappella -- a tiny chunk of this is in a scene in said movie - "Add Some Music" -- again, in the movie, although not the isolated vocals Heh...and because I had heard (attention, Beach Boys lawyers: heard; I'm not necessarily saying I was ever in possession of! ) the Sea of Tunes stuff, when I saw the "Salt Lake City (session highlights)" track on the listing, I knew exactly what that was going to be. I knew it was going to be the "whack off" session!

These two official releases, Hawthorne, CA, and Endless Harmony, blew my mind because not only did they finally not make us buy greatest hits for the 100th time for just a couple rarities, but much of the unreleased material was new, even if you already had all The Beach Boys bootlegs.
To celebrate the upcoming Feel Flows box set, I just cataloged my entire Beach Boys collection of CDs, including bootlegs and download purchases, and they total just under 400. I hope to listen to every single one of them over the next three or four years.

Although it's not as polished as 𝐸𝑛𝑑𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝐻𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑦 it's still very much a worthy follow-up that zeroes in on satisfying the die-hards over the casual listener. Lots of cool tracks to be had on here including some vocals-only and track-only songs, as well as some first-ever stereo mixes. Love the a capella tag at the end of "Time To Get Alone".

This was among the most thrilling purchases in that period. Amazon messed up and I got two while paying for one and they didn't want the other one returned. So my friend got a free Hawthorne out of the deal. And it was he who remarked that there was no Pet Sounds material on there (as a good thing).
