Not knocking the content but releasing this only one month after the Surfer Girl was a mistake IMO. I would have preferred this album not be released and instead have its new tracks incorporated in to Shut Down Vol. 2 (while getting rid of that album’s instrumentals and Louie Louie and Cassius Love to make room). Shut Down Vol. 2 was issued only six months after this so a bit of market over-saturation. All that said, it did come out (duh) and things turned out just fine so who am I to armchair quarterback. Considering how much product was cranked out by Capitol from 1963-1965, we were damn lucky to have as much quality material from Brian as we received. That is a schedule that I doubt most people could handle in this day and age. I never minded the few filler songs and spoken word material that had to be employed to complete the albums. I am always amazed at the amount of music written and recorded over the first 10 years as a band. I agree with what's in bold, and I wonder if it's just because the pace of life has increased so much. If I could just get through this one project, I dream of taking about a week away from phones and computers (no offense to this board)...

It's not an album I ever really listen to or care about as a lot of the band's earliest albums are like that for me. But the album deserves some points as you could consider it as an early example of a concept album as the entire album is connected thematically on the subject of cars (instead of surfing). The title track of course is iconic but again it falls in the category of songs I've heard so often in my life that I never really need to listen to again (unless it's a live or cover version).
My overall rating: 🤷♂️

A number of the newly recorded (Sept 1963 maybe) LDC tracks featured the instrumental lineup of Brian (keyboards), Carl and David (guitars), Al (bass), and Dennis (drums). That's the perfect self contained ensemble for The Beach Boys.
