I remember when the 20th Anniversary special came out. I had heard about the Knebworth concert being recorded, and was glad to see it out in some capacity. I know that they were talking about releasing it on home video at the time. Glad they finally released in 2003. I really like Mark's mix. I wouldn't mind having the special itself on video. I remember PBS airing it in 1983, and making an audio tape of it. Had Carl sign the promo flyer for it a few weeks later.

This must have been Great! to see in a theater! I mean apart from this, what other film/documentary was accessible to fans to watch then? Were there any other theatrical releases?
I'm guessing shows like 'Our Team', the making of MIU documentary and 1976 Anaheim (which would become the
'Good Vibrations Tour' DVD, were only shown on TV? How about 'Knebworth 80'?
Was that 'screened' or did it go straight to TV?
To the best of my knowledge, "Our Team" was never shown in full anywhere. The 1976 TV special was shown on NBC on August 5th, and while Kneboworth was filmed for a proposed video album, it was never available in full anywhere until it was released on DVD in 2003. However, the concert itself - without any overdubs - was broadcast as live on Capital Radio in the UK a few days after the event. Cool, Thanks. If I interpreted correctly, 'Our Team' may be on the cards sometime in the future, I believe Alan Boyd possibly 'hinted' for a future archival project on 'Beach Boys Talk'. Interesting about Knebworth, oh it's complete apart from the few tracks that didn't make the DVD. It's a top notch DVD just the same.

I was re-watching the An American Band DVD tonight and noticed that the Pet Sounds tracks had different vocals than the official release, and were also in true stereo. Checking the Beach Boys Stomp article, each of the Pet Sounds songs are marked "remix: ..." with an explanation as to what is different - "some background vocals missing," "Brian sings middle-eight," etc. This is actually earth shattering as these stereo remixes would pre-date the Pet Sounds Sessions box set by 12 years! For the Pet Sounds Sessions stereo mix, it was noted at the time that it was only possible to remix Pet Sounds in stereo because of current 1997 digital technology that allowed the vocals to be re-synced with stereo backing tracks, because the instruments were mixed to a single mono track on an 8-track tape before vocals were added. Perhaps for the American Band documentary, they did the stereo remixing only from the 8-track tape, so the instruments would still be in mono, and the vocals were remixed to stereo. I'll have to go back and listen again.

Hokey, cheeseball documentary marred by stilted, scripted dialogue from the band members themselves. Yet it features tons of great rare footage of the band over the years. It's worth watching even if it's wildly uneven.

This was the documentary that turned me on to the whole SMiLE period music. So, for me, it was invaluable.
