I sort of love this! Instead of over the top cry singing, we get pop vocal Bruce, which makes the whole thing sound less "Schmaltzy". I've been saying that for years, and that's why I'm disappointed it wasn't on Feel Flows. But at least we got Tears in the Morning with the opening trumpet blast cranked up so ridiculously loud that it blows you off your chair.

I find it highly ironic that for decades we justified buying bootlegs by saying "if only the record companies would release previously-unreleased material from the archives, the fans would love to buy them, and get high quality pristine recordings instead of low quality bootlegs." - but now that the record company is releasing previously-unreleased material from the archives, we find that the bootlegs, in some cases, are actually much better.

Big Sur sounds several hundred times better on this newly leaked bootleg than it does on Feel Flows. I actually played both back-to-back to compare the two and I couldn't believe how poor the officially released version sounded by comparison. The booted version sounds soft and warm, very Beach Boys-like, whereas the released version sounds harsh and hissy, with that same unpleasant trebly sound that dominates Feel Flows. For the life of me I cannot even begin to fathom why they didn't just release it how the band recorded it.

I think I have made my final archival Beach Boys purchase with Feel Flows....until these hearing-impaired "engineers" have figured out exactly what us fans want to hear.
Imagine the blowback if the Beatles catalog was being treated so shoddily.
Oh wait! "1" originally sounded like crap...but they fixed it. Not the other way around!

As Steve Hoffman has stated on his board, the sound is intentional. It is not someone’s bad hearing. It was a management decision for it to sound the way it does. Adding compression, adding reverb are intentional.

I’m not hearing what you are at all. There is more top end for sure and the mix in general is less muddy but in no way would I call the high end unpleasant. I prefer the Feel Flows mix.

With a good headphone, there's a distortion in the left channel in the FF mix.

I agree with Dr Beach Boys (Dirk) says in the post directly above yours. They (Mark Linett and Alan Boyd) purposefully added tons of reverb and compression to the songs on Feel Flows, Big Sur included. If you don't mind and enjoy how it sounds, then that's great. I wish I could enjoy it as well, but I can't. To me, it sounds digital and harsh, as if they were trying to modernise the music for some crazy reason. This new leaked version of Big Sur is how the Beach Boys recorded it, and this how it is supposed to sound.

Adding compression, adding reverb are intentional. That makes me sad. And I didn't become a fan of the music to be let down by new releases. There was a time when reissues sounded better and better each time. Apparently they've peeked..... Yes, it's intentional. We long time hard core fans no longer matter. When I stated "hearing-impared", I meant they're not hearing us!

I couldn’t really find a pattern, and I still don’t see one, other than a few are from original singles.

There’s a chance that it’s mislabelled and is actually an early mix of “Love Is A Woman”, which is not mentioned on the 2014 images and has already leaked.

I had the same problem trying to find them. I ended up using the subsequently released (remastered!) versions. The only one I couldn't find was the Al lead vocal on "Let's Put...", but, as Aaron said, it may indeed have been mislabelled as "Love Is A Woman".

I highly doubt it was intended to be a single. Seeing the length of the track, it's probably the same version as the one on the Analogue Productions Holland release of 5-6 years ago. Which is a longer edit compared to the original version that only made it on a few testpressings, and of course the early German release (2nd run pressing).

There’s only one version of We Got Love. The short edit is a bootleggers creation I believe

Betcha anything it is. The notes on the rarities CD lists "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" as 2:57. "Love is a Woman" times at 2:58 on the 2000 twofer, while "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" is 2:42.

The downloadable version on HDTracks (or was it qobuz? don't remember where I got mine) is 5:56, so...

There’s only one version of We Got Love. The short edit is a bootleggers creation I believe There’s no such thing as a bootleggers creation of We Got Love. The original version / edit (the shorter one) of WGL as it was intended for Holland (last track on side A) can be found on the first run of all October 72 testpressings. I have the Dutch and UK one, and can confirm it’s the ‘short’ version. For the early (2nd) German repressing of the first issue WEA (who had just taken over distribution from Kinney) erroneously took the wrong copy from the shelfs and released the rejected version with WGL on side A. I have this one as well, and indeed it’s the same version as on the testpressings. The first bootlegs with WGL were released in the 80ies on vinyl. I have 2 LP-boots that contain WGL - a UK/Neth and a German one. Interesting enough both comtain a little blip in the first second of the song, indicating it came from the same source. But otherwise those bootlegged versions are identical to the original version. In the 90ies that same WGL (with blip in the intro) appeared on a bunch of bootleg-CD’s. In 2016 Acoustic Sounds / Analogue productions reissued Holland both on 2LP and SACD store.acousticsounds.com/d/95596/The_Beach_Boys-Holland-200_Gram_Vinyl_RecordBoth contain WGL as a bonus cut. And both versions are the longer edit, with the refrain repeated several more times befor the fade out (with lots of similarities with the live version btw). The length of the tracks looks similar to the one mentioned on the Brother Discs. Hence my assumption these 2 are the same. In short: the short version was bootlegged, but not created.
