I am curious if anyone has compiled a list of "unofficially released" Beach Boys (group and solo members) songs that are either circulating on the internet or on bootleg CD's and albums. I have been amazed at the number of unreleased tracks that can be found on YouTube and elsewhere.
Has anyone compiled a list of these tracks?
How did these recordings - so many of them - get out if they were not "officially released?" Who had access to the tape vaults?

How did these recordings - so many of them - get out if they were not "officially released?" Who had access to the tape vaults? There are so many different ways that these things got out. In some cases, someone on the inside might have made a tape for someone. In fact, I think that's how the original batch of 1994 Paley sessions leaked. Aaaaaaand, from what I understand, the person who made the copy of those songs made two versions: one that sounded good and played back too fast, and another that played back at the correct speed but with noticeably downgraded sound quality. Both ended up bootlegged. (I think the former is what the source was for LandyLocked.) That way, the insider could point the finger at exactly who violated the "don't trade this with anybody" agreement. (That wasn't the first time a leak trap happened: back in the earlier days of bootleg CDs, a Smile bootleg had a track that was purported to be "Holidays," but actually played back "Here Come De Honey Man" from Miles Davis's Porgy and Bess. Whoever supplied the tape did that just to catch someone in the act in case it got out. That same track actually appeared on at least one version of a much later desktop-made bootleg called Get the Boot and titled something like "unknown instrumental" or something.)
In the case of the Midnight Beat/Sea of Tunes bootlegs (Unsurpassed Masters, Christmas Sessions, the Sacramento concerts, and The Live Box -- don't know about the Dumb Angel Rarities series and In The Beginning / The Garage Tapes), I think the story is that someone who was working for the Vestron Video crew smuggled the tapes out of the Capitol vault (they were given full access so they could use the tapes for The Beach Boys: An American Band) and made copies, and the floodgates opened in the late '90s.
Brian claimed that the reason Sweet Insanity was never released is that the tapes were stolen....so if that's true, then whoever stole those tapes likely leaked 'em.
I'm guessing the most likely culprit for studio releases is simply someone on the inside made copies for friends.

Bootlegzone was the most comprehensive resource, but it's currently down.

I think Sweet Insanity leaked from the cassettes that were sent out as promos.

Some are out there. Some are only 'out there.' Beyond that, I'm sworn to secrecy.

I think Sweet Insanity leaked from the cassettes that were sent out as promos. Sweet Insanity was supposedly leaked because the master (or copy) was ripped off from the Brains & Genius studio.

There's some good information here that might help you: endlessharmony.boards.net/board/40/bootlegs Would you please introduce yourself to the board members here? Thanks! endlessharmony.boards.net/board/26/new-member-introductions

I always wondered if Landy sold the master (or copy) for bootleg after it was clear it wasn't going to be released. I have no information that this could have happened, more just something that popped into my head.

Per this wiki page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unreleased_songs_recorded_by_the_Beach_BoysDoes anyone know if there have been any updates on the following tracks since 2014, eight years ago? "Burlesque" - As of 2014, no tape has surfaced. "Is Jack Rieley Really Superman?" - As of 2014, no tape has surfaced. "Gimme Some Lovin'" - As of 2014, the tape was reported missing. Additionally, "Spark in the Dark", "Body Talk" (Also known as "Grease Job"), "Funky Fever" don't have any indication as to whether a tape is known to exist or not. Do we know anything this wiki page doesn't? "Rooftop Harry" - The tape of this recording was found in 2014. - I would hope this would mean it is definitely going to be on the set, but who knows these days.

The leaked copies are from promo cassettes; I believe the stolen master was a separate incident that essentially killed the project, but it didn't have any impact on its leaking.

As for the tracks that you mentioned, burlesque, as far as known, was not recorded at the time at all, but a backing track from the M.I.U era with the title “Beach Burlesque” does exist and is more than likely some variation on the same song. Jack Rieley Superman doesn’t exist, or at least wasn’t recorded. “Gimme Some Lovin'” was recorded twice, once in 1972 as a medley with “Baby, I Need Your Lovin“ which I believe is missing, and once in 1977 during the “Adult Child” sessions. I have absolutely no idea if the “Adult Child” version still exists or not but I’m sure someone else here does. As for the other tracks you mentioned, “Spark” and “Body Talk” do exist, are in the vault, people have talked about them before

A 1991 promo DAT of Sweet Insanity is listed on page 269 in The Price and Reference Guide for the Beach Boys American Records. Has this source ever leaked, I wonder? There’s a (lossless) copy of the original promo tape that’s been doing the rounds for a few years that sounds a lot better than the old boots and is probably as good as it’s going to get sound-wise, but a straight digital copy of the DAT sure would’ve been cool to hear…

What about those unreleased track that definitely exist but are unlikely ever to see the light of day?
Personally, I will be amazed if Rollin' Up to Heaven, Drip Drop, the Adult/Child version of Hey Little Tomboy or Lazy Lizzie ever receive an official release, although obviously I'd love it if they did.

I could see them maybe releasing a specially edited instrumental version of RUTH, but the melody is fairly repetitive, so there might not be much of a point for it.

I think Peter Ames Carlin in his biography of the band calls it one of the most rock 'n' roll things they ever did, and I'm inclined to agree. But agreed, it would probably become pretty repetitive and pointless without the vocals.

I could see “Ruth” being released in 2024 as one of those (blink and you’ll miss it) EP digital dumps with zero promo and very limited availability
