I'm enjoying all of it and enjoying hearing everybody talked about it and everybody is cool and we're all good. Greetings from San Clemente Pier unfortunately not mentioned in any Beach Boys songs I don't think. Didn't they mention it in 'California Feelin'? I was walking down the beach at San Clemente Onofre It was such a beautiful day Like most days The wind was blowin' through my hair Sunlight chased my cares away And the sun dances in the morning sky.... FTFY...

Well, San Onofre is in San Clemente; so in a way you're both right.

Two further observations: whoever said watch out for the packaging (was it here ?) is right. The first time I took disc one out, which took a bit of pulling, there was a glob of glue on it about the size of a matchead. I shudder to think what would have happened had I just bunged it in my player like that. And the liners: I realise that, right now this may be a minority view but I like them, the way they strike a balance between the emotional and the informative, with contributions from the band members highlighting this point or that. But then, I'm a liners guy. Returning to the tracks themselves... I'll sleep on it and listen again tomorrow. Who knows, something miraculous may happen overnight. I love the inner sleeves and the nod to All Summer Long, but I had the blob of glue on two of the discs. Packaging's a little tight...

My first impressions after a day's listening is that, yes indeed, it sounds 'bright', even shrill in places - though at least when I make a compilation for the car featuring Baby Blue, I'll be able to hear the opening now.
In terms of what's there, it's difficult to argue - but I will. It ought to have Surfin', Break Away, either Please Let me Wonder or She Knows Me So Well (or both), Cabinessence or Wonderful, Caroline No, She's Not the Little Girl I Once Knew and that 'motherfucker' of a song, I'll Bet He's Nice - and there should be something off TWGMTR, preferably From There To Back Again, because it's the best BB song since anything on Holland; at a push, I'd settle for the title track, but the album should be represented. I'd also replace It's About Time with Slip On Through and be tempted to drop Goin' On for Santa Ana Winds (or have both). Songs I could easily do without... Pom-Pom Playgirl, Be True (though it plays a part in M&B's shows), Everyone's in Love (I know - another Mike favourite in his live shows and, I'll admit, I think it sounds better here and the sequencing doesn't hurt either), All I Want to Do, Girl Don't Tell Me, San Miguel. I think I'd replace the melancholy of Farmer's Daughter with the melancholy of The Lonely Sea too. Maybe. Obviously, I'd like to see the back of Barbara Ann but it's such a major player in the 60s catalogue, it would be hard to get shot of it. Couldn't come up with a non-cover from MIU? Possibly just as well, but there are a couple of possibilities.
For the uninitiated or even casual fan, it's great, but they might prefer the Platinum Collection, itself a vast step up from the original Sounds of Summer, though you're saddled with the awful Fat Boys and Status Quo numbers for the Euro Market. You also get Lady Lynda, which, to be honest, wouldn't hurt here.
Wish they'd included a remix of California Dreaming and got shot of the awful echo and drums. That one might have won over some fans!

On my YouTube stream, there seems to be a lot of a repeat video (not performed,) but random clips of Girl Don’t Tell Me and the Ed Sullivan Do It Again, lately. It really annoyed me about The Little (orphaned, again) Girl I Once Knew. I think the dead air, pausing was brilliant and courageous on Brian’s end. But on the SOS, which I consider a minor release, different from The Sunshines, is California Feeling with Carl, that redeems, other issues. That track was worth the $40. They did “save the best for last.” This guy. Is there a good reason that the liner notes and photos, don’t come with the digital download? It is not as though there is no saving of trees in the process. The 3 CD package was selling for $15 less than the download.

I didn't ordered my 3cds version yet, but I gave a listen to the digital downloads (on my laptop with Sennheiser Momentum headphones), about a minute for each song. I'm quite disappointed of the overall sound. In my opinion, these kind of songs should have been released in their original intention without compression or any kind of hiss. We are light years away from 2017/2018's "Sunshine Tomorrow", "Wake the World: The Friends Sessions" and "I Can Hear Music: The 20/20 Sessions". For sure I won't buy the 6 vinyl version.
Having said that, I will be eternally grateful to everyone involved in assembling this kind of releases.

It kind of tells you how good and diverse this band is; An 80 song compilation an we still want to add and/or subtract from the play list. I do wish that it was the only issue that we had to deal with.

Well, San Onofre is in San Clemente; so in a way you're both right. Yeah, San Clemente - where Nixon used to live. I've heard California Feelin' so many times (since it came out in the 80's on a bootleg) that the lyrics are ingrained in my head by now. Speaking of Nixon, maybe it's time I trot out the Nixon joke that was told by Dennis.....

I don't know if this has been brought up as a culprit of a lot of the sound quality issues around how harsh the 70's remixes sound on Made In California, Feel Flows, and Sounds Of Summer 2022 is not just an issue of mastering, but possibly an issue of deliberately "turning off" the Dolby A in tape transferring/mixing. Paraphrasing here, coming from Steve Hoffman: the 16 track multi-track tapes were recorded Dolby A Stretched (to keep the hiss levels down), and were possibly transferred back today unstretched with the Dolby A off. This could be a large part of what could be driving the weird supersonic sounding top end harshness that starting showing up around Made In California (see remixes of "It's Over Now", "Why", and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" as some of the harshest examples). See Steve Hoffman's comment on Dolby A here: forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/beach-boys-sounds-of-summer-box-set-reissue.1130349/page-24#post-29810907

i posted a comment a couple days ago about how i thought the new 3 cd set sounded great to me. at that time i was listening to the digital downloaded versions on my iphone. My physical copy doesn’t arrive until tomorrow (along with brian’s lpr soundtrack). so I thought all was right in my world anyways. i just listened to the downloads on my computer. it has dell external speakers plugged into the computer. these same files that sounded perfectly fine on my iphone sounded like they were being played in a closet in the next room. i’m no technical guy but there was a huge difference in sound. so you all may be onto something about the sound of this set. but they did sound great to me over the iphone. computer…not so much.

B: it’s over now on MIC, If I’m not mistaken, is not a new mix, just a vintage Alternate. C: it’s far from just 70s material. As pointed out before, these sound issues can be pretty much found on any project within the past two years. That goes from these 70s era remixes, to tracks of Brian’s in the 90s on the long promised Road soundtrack, to the recent California Music CD which has music recorded in the 2020s. It may possibly Play a small factor, but I think more likely is that the team behind the sound of all of these projects more likely just… likes it, doesn’t notice it, thinks that we won’t notice it or some combination of the three.

I just personally experienced first hand what i had been reading about sound problems. I was acknowledging that i too am beginning to believe there is an underlying problem. No need to be a smart ass about it.

Has anyone else listened on t i d a l music app at the Master level of streaming? So many different references to technology and speakers and platforms and I wonder if I could compare what I've been hearing to someone else listening to the exact downloads from tidal. I listen on my very good car speakers.

Feel Flows and Sounds of Summer are vastly inferior in terms of audio quality.

Mark Linett and Alan Boyd clearly have very good ears (they gave us The Pet Sounds Sessions, The Smile Sessions and Sunshine Tomorrow, among others) so it boggles my mind that they could possibly think the audio on Feel Flows and the new Sounds of Summer sounds good.

I listened to this thing in every way I could. On my car system. On my home 5.1 system. Streaming. CD. And vinyl. Finally on Bose noise cancelling headphones which was the ultimate litmus test. Two mixes in particular caused me to stop and wonder what in the world. The first was Help Me Rhonda, your friendly neighborhood extraction mix. What a mess. It sounds like a reference mix done by a junior engineer playing with the dials after hours. This song once had an instrumental track I think. It is gone. Al's lead is like a giant wrapper all over the song. When he is singing, everything else including the backing vocals nearly disappear. There is some strange phasing coming out of the instrumental break when the vocals come back in. Just a complete disaster and it is inexplicable why that was allowed to pass muster.
The second is It's Ok. The MIC mix sounds even wonkier here. Mike's lead is shot through an AM speaker, the backgrounds are pushed back compared to the original and that six note organ intro is just not necessary.
No real issues with the rest. Some sound better than others (I Get Around is much better on headphones than anything else). Be True To Your School unfortunately is the unrenovated house in this collection. Hasn't been touched since 1963 except for the occasional remastering and sounds it.

I know this video below has already been shared but it's worth re-posting because this guy totally nails it. It's a pity he uses the word 'controversial' in the title because, of course, his opinions are shared by a sizeable number of the fanbase. Take 15 minutes and give it a watch.
Oh, and anyone who still believes that the treble-heavy sound of Feel Flows and Sounds of Summer is going to appeal to younger listeners ought to read some of the comments in the comments section beneath the video.
