Do you wanna dance is clearly unlistenable and... where is the hight voice in the end? Wait, what… ”Unlistenable”? Is this really you, mustomax? 😨 PS. Have you tried listening to it in Atmos? Are you listening to streaming or through your own equipment. I am confused. I thought that the Atmos was only available from a streaming service. Or are you using an Atmos branded device on non-streaming?

Releasing an expanded Sounds of Summer full of a random assortment of remixes and remasters just sounds like a bad idea, anyway. I know SOS is the best-selling Beach Boys comp but let’s be real, they probably should’ve just made a new set and focused solely on the remixes. Even with the new mixes being as dogshit (mostly) as they are, the inconsistency is like the bigger drawback. The track listing of the latter two discs feels really random. I would not recommend this box to someone getting into The Beach Boys at all. Something more chronological and spread a bit more evenly like the Good Vibrations set I think would’ve made a better pick.
As for the sound, it blows. Every mix that ends in (2021 Mix) is basically guaranteed to be shit with extremely minor exceptions. Everything else is fine, though. Mainly because they took everything else off of better boxsets and comps, lol. I think if you HAVE to listen to this album, the Atmos version on AppleMusic is better, but still not generally great. Made a playlist of random Atmos tracks and the SOS tracks were consistently the most hollow and thin sounding. It’s really a shame. I think the biggest insult really is the idea that this set was made to sound good on modern equipment and young ears but uh nope. If anything it sounds worse.

The essential point of the releases is copyright extension and protection. That is the meat and potatoes. It has to meet criteria for inclusion and it may look random, but if the song’s copyright expiration date was approaching, it needed to be protected. If someone else knows more, I’d love to hear it. Sometimes their stuff sat, like an unfinished manuscript, until the right pair of eyes came upon it to work through what it needed or to refine it. People are talking about the process, rather than the original product that required protection from others exploiting their work. Mark and Alan took those extra steps for “presentation” - but there must have been some master list with original dates that triggered these tracks, for inclusion in the releases. It is a business, complete with duties to protect its assets.

I’m listening through Apple Music (streaming) on my iPhone and Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones. No need for an Atmos branded device or fancy equipment. That’s what’s so nice about Atmos. Surround technologies were previously channel-based. Atmos is only metadata (plus the audio itself, of course) and is object-based. You can play Atmos mixes on a 7.1 setup. Or a 5.1 setup. Or a standard stereo setup. It’s scalable and will work on any setup. The immersive qualities will of course be greater and more life-like with a dedicated 7.1 setup, but it sounds surprisingly good in standard 2.0 stereo as well. I prefer headphones and not speakers when listening to Atmos in stereo. From what I’ve read here, the Dolby Atmos mixes are only available on Apple Music and not Amazon or Tidal. Not yet anyhow.

Excellent information. Here's a question. In my car I listen to the old Sounds of Summer on Tidal which is available in Atmos. And then I listened to the new sounds of summer in master level on TIDAL. To me the old Sounds of Summer on Atmos sounded better than the new one on Masters. But again the new one is not on Atmos on TIDAL, as you point out. Can you listen to Tidal or comment upon my comparison? Would you agree if you can hear them side-by-side that the atmos old Sounds of Summer sounds better than the new sounds of Summer on Master streaming?. Thank you so much as I'm really trying to nail down what it is I'm hearing and why I'm liking it better. quote author=" gigantiskpyjamas" source="/post/55563/thread" timestamp="1656268349"] Are you listening to streaming or through your own equipment. The Sounds of Summer Atmos mixes are generally pretty underwhelming, especially when heard back to back with other artists in a playlist. It’s a little unfair that Apple has added the extraction mix of ”I Get Around” to one of their more popular Atmos playlists as it’s one of the poorest mixes on the set. A few of the SOS Atmos mixes sound much improved from their stereo counterparts though (Shut Down, Do You Wanna Dance?).

Unfortunately I am no longer a Tidal subscriber, but perhaps someone else here can give it a listen? There seems to be some kind of mix-up on Apple Music, and perhaps it’s the same with Tidal? The old Sounds of Summer with a 2003 production date is actually disc 1 of the new, expanded set and is all new 2021 mixes apart from Do You Wanna Dance? which is mono. Several tracks are also wrongly attributed as mono mixes. Maybe they have replaced the old version with the new ”definitive” remixes for sake of consistency… If it’s advertised as Atmos on Tidal it must be the new version, only with old cover art and the 2003 production date.

Today I also noticed that the beginning of Carl’s opening lines on BB are clipped here and there by what sounds like someone with clumsy fingers on the faders (trying to keep the hiss at bay?) This definitive version just gets better with every new listen... Why Dennis never thought to incorporate all these mistakes into the original is beyond me. Lol, the poor guy missed his big chance at being definitive. Question: who engineered, mixed the 1979 LA (Light Album) version?

Engineered by Steve Desper and Produced and I presume mixed by Bruce Johnston. SWD had nothing to do with BBLA. The multiple engineers were Chuck Britz, Bill Fletcher, Joel Moss, Curt Becher, Earl Mankey, Tom Murphy, Chuck Leary, Greg Venable, Jeff Guercio and John Hanlon. My best guess for the "BB" engineer is Tom Murphy.

Those guys worked with Dennis on P.O.B. and "Love Surrounds Me" was probably recorded by one of them too. Moffitt was the lead Engineer at Brother but I guess wasn't involved with this album.

I do miss the Theremin on Wild Honey, but somehow Carl’s vocal sounds less “screechy” to my ears on this version. I’m in the small camp of those who love The Marcella remix. Never liked that song before - too mushy sounding. The version on the new SOS has more punch. Listening on my Harmon Kardon Onyx Studio 7 speaker from Apple Music on my iphone.

Slightly left-field question.
Can anyone tell me what’s so different about the 3CD set being sold by UMG that warrants it being labelled as “exclusive”?
On release day or thereabouts, I received a marketing email from UMG full of links to the different variants of the set being sold on its website (which I think is the Beach Boys official store.
Most of the sets were labelled as “exclusive”, including the 3CD set, but there is no information that explains what’s different about it compared to the sets being sold by every other legitimate retailer the world over.
I’ve emailed them to ask for an explanation, and have had to repeat the email, worded differently each time to facilitate easier and easier understanding, five or six times now.
Each answer seems to me to be further and further from what is probably the truth – that the set is identical, simply had the “exclusive” tag added in error.
Here’s the latest answer:
“Rebecca H (uMusic Customer Care) Jun 27, 2022, 11:53 AM EDT Hi John, Thanks for your patience while we looked further into this for you! This item is exclusive to the official beach boys store. Unfortunately, we do not know anything about this version sold on a different site and cannot confirm if it is legitimate. We apologize for any inconvenience!”
The implication seems to me to be that anyone other than UMG selling the set is peddling a bootleg copy – which is of course utter twaddle.
Can ANYONE tell me why their version of the 3CD set might possibly qualify as an “exclusive”?
Thanks in advance…

Am I misremembering, or is the second side of the sixth album blank ? Yes, or to be correct it has an 'etching' on it.
The other release that is also available, is the Target edition of the 2LP 'Sounds Of Summer', which also includes a slip mat.

Is it just me or does the current popularity of the Boys' California Dreamin' kind of give the finger to Boomer/GenX notions/delusions of what youth these days think is "cool"?
