Well i’ve just given the entire thing a nice listen, and here are my thoughts. The positives: The track selection, for the most part, really do represent exactly what would get someone into The Beach Boys. If you’re handing (or more likely sending them a link to stream) this Compilation, After they listen they will definitely have formed some sort of opinion on the group. They’ll know if they do want to dig deeper or they don’t, but this really is a nice overview. The majority of the mastering is tolerable. There are obviously some exceptions and I’ll get to those in a minute, but for the most part this sounds A lot better than their previous retrospective, 50 big ones. The Sunflower and Surfs Up tracks, with a couple exceptions, sound better than they did on Feel flows. The new mixes are a mixed bag, but most of them are not what I would call offensively bad. The Night Was So Young, despite only being remastered, somehow came out sounding absolutely amazing and is by far my favorite thing on this set. No idea why it sounds so fantastic, but it might just be the best master of the song there has ever been. Mike’s lead vocal in the Bridge of Wouldn’t It Be Nice seems to have had a nice new extraction that sounds a lot cleaner than the one from 2001. Despite not being labeled anywhere, Farmer’s Daughter got a nice new mix. Do You Like Worms in stereo is very enjoyable.
The negatives: The tagging across streaming services is an absolute mess. There are tracks labeled 2021 mix that are actually 2012 mixes, there are tracks (see Farmers Daughter above) that were remixed but have absolutely no indication of it, there are tracks that were given the complete wrong title (All I Want To Do is labeled All I Wanna Do on Apple Music which is confusing because it looks like that songs on there twice), there are misspellings (Streo Mix on Cottonfields), etc. these are things that should be able to be updated over the air and I really hope that Capitol/BRI work on that. While most of the remixes on the set are fine, there are a couple that are just bizarre. The biggest example that comes to my mind is Let Us Go On This Way. The song already had those gated drums that are all over love you, so instead of keeping it that way they decided to crank them all the way up. Now it sounds like you’re listening to “Born In The USA”, and it’s all a bit much. The Baby Blue remix has a lot of hiss. All I Wanna Do still has feel Flows sounding brittle high-end and tape hiss that doesn’t really put the song in the best light. Like I said the rest of the sunflower and SU tracks were quite improved, I’m not sure why this one is the lonely one out. Some of the extraction mixes, especially Surfin’ Safari and Ronda, have Artifaccting all over them. While for the most part the extractions actually came out very good, these are two where I think they should have just stuck with the original mono because the technology just isn’t there yet. It’s not a dealbreaker, just something I noticed.
Overall I’d give the entire thing, at least after first listen, a 6/10. It’s not bad, it definitely could’ve been worse, and it makes me slightly more optimistic about future archival releases.

Mike’s lead vocal in the Bridge of Wouldn’t It Be Nice seems to have had a nice new extraction that sounds a lot cleaner than the one from 2001. It says ”2013 Stereo Mix” on Apple Music. They issued a mix featuring an improved extraction of Mike’s vocals for Made In California so I would assume it’s the same version.

Are San Miguel and Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again free of the compression/treble issues of Feel Flows? I felt like Dennis's vocals during the chorus on the latter suffered due to the mastering (on Feel Flows that is - on MIC they sounded great).

Per Spotify...
To my ears, there's only about a handful of songs that I can really pick the eyes out of that belong on the 'rubbish' pile. Thankfully, a few we've already critiqued , 'Marcella', 'Shut Down' and 'Good Vibrations'. The extraction mixes just don't work. They sound too 'wonky', and don't sound right, seems like it adds too bi product of the process to the audio.
This pertains to 'Surfin Safari', 'Help Me Rhonda' (almost sounds like it's gone through some heavy De-Essing or NR) and 'I Get Around'. The drums seem to sway and dip in and out of places...?...
'Don't Worry Baby' is smothered in reverb, just why? My favorite song. I hope they revisit 'LUGOTW' and 'YNAMOHTSA' again before committing those to any CATP boxset. Terribly squashed and lifeless. Otherwise, the rest of the remixes are great and sound overall is mighty fine... to my ears. A few clunkers, but so be it. Cannot wait to hear what you guys have to say!

The new “Do It Again” remix sounds like a bad mashup of the single version and the early “Rendezvous” demo.

California Feelin’ is an inspired closing song for this collection. It sounds very good here.
Still making my way through all the tracks.

I'm sitting here listening to SOS now and many of these tracks are bitchin'. Probably definitive. Just.......real good. A few of them are messed up, but I think the good far outweighs the bad on this set. More details tomorrow - It's Gettin' Late.

Copied from elswhere on this august forum, because it really belongs here:
Like I always have, going back to my first 45, I'll listen to the music not the signal path or playback equipment.
OK, so halfway through disc one on Spotify. The new mixes sound just a tad... brittle: maybe bright(er) is a better phrase, but not offensively so. I'll get used to it. Best sounding track thus far ? "Be True...". Which is mono. Go figure. Listened on headphones to a few tracks. BIG mistake, the bottom end is booming. Unlistenable. On speakers, no such problem (and no, it not my cans).
Sidenote: this is the most I've listened to any BB for years... and I've ab-so-lute-ly lovin' it. God, I love this band and this music.
New mix of "Dance, Dance, Dance" - whoa ! So much going on, and everywhere at once, in the best possible way. And I'm with Howie on "Do It Again", more specifically this new mix. Great point of entry.
OK, so that was disc one. Nothing truly, horrifically offensive (as long as I don't listen on cans). This is OK. This is more than OK. This is the cream of The Beach Boys, what's not to love ? Now, to boldly go...
Halfway through the second disc. There's an overall thinness that's a tad offputting, even on the period mixes. "YNAMOFTSA" is not unlike "Marcella", alas. Ah, the new mix of "Baby Blue". Like it, sounds more like what Dennis would have done (like I know what Dennis would have done...). Best sounding track ? "It's About Time". Full. Disc two overview: needs more low end grunt. Mildly batshit track selection (in a good way). Maybe it's my old ears but I'm not hearing any mastering problems on the 1970-71 tracks. On to journey's end.
Disc three. According to my Spotify stats, "Everyone's In Love With You" is a new mix. That or absolutely no-one has listened to it before. Odd. "California Saga" is the album version, which is slightly disappointing. Oh dear, the first bit of true awfulness. Dennis' vocal on the alternate mix of "All I Want To Do" sounds like it was recorded in the hallway. Of a building across the street. Hm. Same with "Susie C".
Aaaaaahhhhhhh... all is forgiven, even the inclusion of "Barbara-f******-Ann". Why ? Because, my friends - and even my enemies - the booming "DEEP AND WIDE" on "Time To Get Alone" is restored. Life is good. Gooder, even. "(WIBNT)LA" is also a new mix, and it sounds just dandy. I'm hearing more Moog bass, which is always a fine thing.
So, as with disc two so with disc three: a slight thinness over all (except, oddly, the last track) but thankfully nothing as sonically grotesque as the Vimeo trailer of "Marcella" would have had us believe (on this version it's still a bit of a poser, but at least you can actually listen to it without pulling your ears off). I can live with this, in the main, and hopefully the expanded version will reach a new audience... and of course, maybe the actual discs will sound different/better/worse. I'll let you know in due course. One and a half thumbs up. Whatever that means...

Very bizarre release. I can’t figure out who it’s for. And why disguise it as a compilation that already came out years ago? Why?!? Why not just put out a “The Beach Boys: Remixed” thing and be honest with what it is? Us hardcores would probably eat that up, but again: who is this geared toward? Folks who tossed the original Sounds Of Summer in the shopping cart while in the checkout line at Wal-Mart who forgot that they have the old one when they see the new one the very same check out line? Will hipsters at Amoeba who think The Beach Boys are malt shop memories fall for this cheesy cover art they’ve already seen in their parents CD collection? Will weird new mixes fool them into thinking this is cool music and not the forever nerdy and complex and fascinating Beach Boys many of them already love? It’s like someone tore apart your bedroom when you were away but taped all the broken pieces back together nearly perfectly but the room somehow just feels all wrong.

Howie made it very clear, it is aimed toward pulling in the the 22 year old demographic, not us diehards or us old timer's.

Interesting to listen to a few of the new mixes. I agree that Susie Cincinnati sounds very weird and I'm not sure the song really warranted a 2012 mix, a 2020 mix and a 2021 mix. Considering that it wasn't deemed good enough to originally make it onto Sunflower, it certainly has been issued enough times over the years.

Everything since then has only made it sound worse, to my ears. The Feel Flows version was, frankly, unlistenable.

My set is on it's way, I'm tracking it .. it's in Stoke (which is about 50 miles from where I am. I'm confident that I'll get it today).
Meanwhile, I'm at work and Streaming it through my Hi-Fi system. For context and not swinging male-appendage bragging rights, the system (or the specific way I'm listening to 'Sounds of Summer' today) is TIDAL (FLAC file streaming) > SONOS Connect > Cambridge Audio 200M DAC > Denon Amp > Celestion Loudspeakers > My Ears.
This is an overall post on what I've heard so far .. disc.1 and 2, as it's still playing.
Sounding mighty fine to me. Nothing to really make my ears stand-up and tell me " .. what a load of tosh! How dare they put this out for us fans to nitpick about! .. ".
It sounds flippin' marvellous!
Admittedly, I might come across those gremlins on disc.3, but .. so far .. so wonderful! This humble purchaser is happy with TIDAL's streaming presentation of the songs. I cannot wait until I have the physical media in my hands and play it on my proper system (58 year old ears taken into consideration).
