Many questions about the physics of it. It has been claimed it contained 8 tons of sand, at a foot deep the size of the box would be about 176 sq ft or 10x18, 13x14, 12x15, or 9x20 figuring one dimension as a standard length of dimensional timber. It was a big house, I'm sure could accommodate it. The first problem that comes to mind is foot pedals 10" inches under sand. Maybe the sand depth was only 6 inches and the box was 352 sq ft and was more like 18x20 and he just dug out the pedals with his foot as best he could as needed, if needed. Maybe everything about it was awkward and it ended up barely used as apparently happened to the tent. Maybe the description is wrong. Or my math. Maybe legs of the bench and piano were elevated within the sand? Maybe monkeys CAN fly. Maybe, maybe, maybe... Eight (8) tons of sand with a ton at 2,000 pounds (a short ton) means 16,000 pounds - there are beach sand calculators online that seem to . How would they keep the grand piano level, if it had sand under it and would, in theory, contstantly be shifting, the way your feet are imbalanced when you walk in sand, and it looks like it is "levitating" unless there was some kind of faux platform to maintain the piano in some level form with the rest of the "decorative" sand surrounding it for effect? We had a concrete mixer in the back yard because my father was a builder at one point, and I believe sand was sold by the cubic yard and might have had a different way of measuring the weight and volume for a truckload. Was it a sunken living room? They were pretty popular back then and the photo gave me that impression. It might be easier to “guess-timate” some of the dimensions. I can't imagine (unless the house was built on slab, without a cellar - the structural problem of that amount of weight) being supported, on top of the piano’s weight, but, I am not an architect or engineer so don't know those calculations, either. calculator-online.net > sand-calculator Says “0.750 cubic yards of 3/4 cubic yards or 20 cubic feet I equals to one ton of sand.” Another calculator says “A cubic yard average weighs 2,700 pounds or 1.35 tons.” It is based on density estimates. I’m wondering about Brian’s sand box, long gone...time for some coffee! And a reality check. 😂

Anyone have a scan directly from the program by chance? (eyes batting coquettishly) Unless there is some copyright issue or something. Then you don't know nothin' see. Forget I said it. I was just jokin' anyways, see.

I gotta say, what a stunning coincidence it is that this thread kicked off just a couple of weeks before the sandbox pic was revealed! MIU Fan, did you have a tip?

My insider street cred is nil, unfortunately. I’m guessing there must have been more pics on that reel, especially if that photo was taken by a professional photographer, perhaps from a music mag; they’d snap away like crazy. If it’s from the family album, though, that might be it.

And the missing Smile tape library reels. Perhaps all that will surface one day. This photo did.

It's amazing that this picture was found in a fan magazine. How did nobody know of this until now???

It's amazing that this picture was found in a fan magazine. How did nobody know of this until now??? Well, it was found in a German fans mother's scrapbook. We don't know how long that'd been stashed away, and of course iffn you weren't excessively clued in, you might see it, think "Brian at the piano... geez those are hideous curtains" and move on. The impression I got was that it's a very recent find. I'll ask around.

I remember back in the day of Jon Hunt and John Lane's SMiLE Shop, some fan said they'd tracked all the Inside Pop reels to a German library (?) .. baloney, as it turned out. Remember those days Cam Mott AGD ? Good times.

But this is The Beach Boys we're talking about, where all forms of logic and sense don't seem to exist. Edit: I just realized I might have misunderstood. Are we saying that this picture came from a German fan publication, or a photo a person happened to have somehow?

It was found by a German fan in their mother's scrapbook. Like I said.
