its an interesting curiosity and worth a listen. But it's not something I dig up and listen to again and again. And I dont think it would have been a good album.
I know im very much in the minority, and at the risk of getting placed on a watchlist somewhere...I actually like Hey Little Tomboy. I think it's funny, especially the spoken word parts. I just picture Brian saying them to a young butch woman at a bar or something and it makes me laugh
For me, one of the flaws of the material is that it doesn't gel together the way Love You does, even though that also had some scattered themes. It might have possibly come together more if it was finished--like the unified production might have made the songs sound like they belong despite their differences. But I just can't see a finished, good album with Frank Sinatra/lounge singer type songs such as "life is for the living" alongside typical off beat Brian songs like Hey Little Tomboy or Shortenin' Bread. Maybe Im grading this material slightly too hard, expecting it to fit together as an album when it's just unfinished demos and works in progress. Or maybe some of you are giving the collection a pass because it was unfinished, when we have stuff like SMiLE which not only gels but sounds fantastic even though it's also unfinished. Who's to say?

Is the album unfinished? I was always under the impression it was compiled and ready to go, but ultimately shelved. I’m listening to it now for the first time in awhile and I mostly agree that it doesn’t really hang together very well, though I think it’s really just down to “Games” and “H.E.L.P.”, I think the rest sounds of a piece.
Overall, I have to say, I really enjoy it. It’s just such a weird album, weirder than Love You, full of hilariously amazing lyrics, gut-wrenching ballads, lovely melodies, and a helping of “Shortening Bread.” Definitely not everyone’s cuppa, but I prefer it to much of what came out after under The Beach Boys name.

Love it. One of my favorites. Should have been released, maybe with a little tweaking: add "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and "My Diane", maybe lose "Deep Purple".
9/10 tweaked or not.

It's interesting to note that when the group was assembling CALIFORNIA FEELING (which became MIU), they considered a couple of Adult Child tracks for that LP. On Christmas Eve, 1977, the following master for the LP was assembled:
Side 1: Sweet Sunday Kinda Love Matchpoint Of Our Love Belles Of Paris Winds of Change Diane It's Over Now
Side Two: She's Got Rhythm Shortenin' Bread Our Team Kona Coast How's About A Little Bit Of Your Sweet Lovin' Wontcha Come Out Tonight
I think they added It's Over Now to get another Carl lead on the LP (and of course that it was/is a great track). Five days later on December 29, they went back in and removed those two tunes. The second line up for California Feeling was:
Side 1: Matchpoint Of Our Love Pitter Patter Sweet Sunday Kinda Love Belles Of Paris Winds of Change Diane
Side Two: She's Got Rhythm Our Team Hey Little Tomboy Kona Coast Wontcha Come Out Tonight How's About A Little Bit Of Your Sweet Lovin'

Looking at It’s Over Now being casually removed and replaced by Hey Little Tomboy causes me unexplainable sadness.
