I agree 100 percent! I compared a few copies, and to my ears, even over the Hoffman disc, I thought it sounded the best.
Yet, I found it to be the worst sounding Pet Sounds that I ever heard. I’ve learned very early on not to trust anyone else’s ears, but my own. 😁 Curious, which CD version do you prefer?

Craig, I don’t like any of them. I have a rip of the 71 LP that I listen to when I want to hear it in mono. I’m a big fan of the stereo mix and I listen to it most of the time since 1997. Edit: The 50th Anniversary CD, which uses the 71 release, doesn’t sound like my rip of the LP.

Have you heard the 50th Mono vinyl version released by Capitol? I think it sounds 'lovely', but eh?
It would be curious to see you compare the 71' to the 50th and see how they compare...

The 2016 CD is my go to. 93 Hoffman is beautiful as well. To my ears the 97 is a muffled mess but I get that’s the appeal for some people

And....Here.....We......Go.....Again!
Marcella (2021 Remix) Just landed a few minutes ago, taken straight from Spotify, MP3 160kbps. Am I going to be negative Nancy again? Yup. The mix I don't mind on first listen, but they've sucked the life out of it with compression!. Yikes! Yes, I know the bitrate, that's why I posted before you audiophiles jump down my neck, but a quick compare to the CATP version using Spotify, has left me going 'wtf you serious?' Just why?!! Anyway, don't let me stray your opinions and ears, here's the worm for you early birds. Enjoy!

Thanks Horsey! Wow, sounds more like a different version or mix from the upcoming CATP-Holland box set, and not a remix of the original song. It is cool to listen to a few times, but it is way too different than the original. Boy are those background vocals “busy”. Good decision too, to hide a few of them on the original mix. Still, I am holding off judgement until I get CD in hand next Friday and I listen on a good stereo system.

Yes, thanks ever so Rick.
I loved it, loved it because it’s so different. Definitely (okay definitely to MY ears …) some different takes of some of the tracks in there, most notably the lead guitar break (sorry, “middle-eight”).
Like the Smiley Smile stereo mix, it spells out just how much more fun a different mix can be – there’s formerly buried stuff suddenly clearly brought to the fore, the drums are going off like cannonfire, it’s dirtier, rockier… that much closer to its cousins Mess of Help and Funky Pretty.
If you had a time machine and could bring the 1972 band here to 2022, and asked them to re-record the track using today’s tech, I’d like to believe this is what they’d cut.
If this is a taste of the So Tough/Holland box, then terrific. Let’s hope it’s 20–30 discs! Let Mark and Alan loose on remixing a bunch more albums (inc Sunflower and Surf’s Up).
Am I sounding too positive? I’m having a good week. F’ing loving it!

Christ on a tandem, that's horriffically bad ! The drum intro sounds like it was recorded from the hallway three floors up... the guitars are tinny... and there's a strange volume pulse throughout. Different guitar lick. It's as close to unlistenable as makes no difference. Almost no bottom end. If it sounds this bad on the CD, it's going back.

Wow! Awesome. You can hear so many extra little parts and vocals that really add a lot. Very crisp, unlike the stiff, stuffy and muddy original. Great ambiance, like you are sitting there listening live. Been a while since listened to the original but the guitar solo sounds like a different take. Can't wait for the whole release.

Cripes, just listened to the version on Apple Music as it’s dropped here in the U.K. now, and Rick’s Spotify/MP3 posted above sounds far superior – clearer, more distinct etc. Can hear lots of those new revelations but it’s like someone’s thrown a thin rug back over the speakers (okay, buds) and restored some of the muffled nature of the original.
What goes on?

Ha ha, new mix of Marcella sounds like a joke. Is this really the work of Mark Linett, the man who gave us a tasteful and beautiful stereo mix of Pet Sounds 25 years ago or the work of an amateur who just discovered that you can set every plugin to 11?

OK, listening on Spotify, and it's easily 1000% better. It's listenable, there's some bottom end, doesn't sound like the song's being squeezed in a vice. Intro drums still sound off to me, but all in all, thankful to know it wasn't my ears. Disclosure: I'm listening on speakers, not cans or earbuds. Colour me old school.

Uummmm… 'scuse me if this has been covered before, but how come this track seems to be sounding different whether listened to via iTunes, Spotify or YouTube? Aren't they all using the same masterings of the same tracks? And how different will it sound again on CD? Vinyl?
This sort of thing used to be so simple…

There's definitely some clear, dare I suggest 𝑎𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑣𝑒 changes to this mix. It's almost as if the song is trying to beat you over the head over how different it is when compared to the original mix. Not sure yet whether I like or dislike this new version, but I feel like I just got my ass kicked. 😵

It appears this thing will be released on June 16, more likely June 17. Here’s a tracklist, but keep in mind it’s translated from Apple Music Japan so some of it’s probably lost in translation and it’s early tagging… Disc 1: California Girls (2001 Mix) I Get Around (2021 Stereo Mix) Surfin' Safari (2021 Stereo Mix) Surfin' U.S.A. (2021 Stereo Mix) Fun Fun Fun (2013 Stereo Mix) Surfer Girl (2021 Stereo Mix) Don't Worry Baby (2021 Stereo Mix) Little Deuce Coupe Shut Down (2021 Stereo Mix) Help Me Rhonda (2021 Stereo Mix) Be True To Your School (Mono) When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) [2021 Stereo Mix] In My Room (2021 Stereo Mix) God Only Knows (1996 Mix) Sloop John B (Stereo/Remastered) Wouldn't It Be Nice (2013 Stereo Mix) Getcha Back Come Go With Me Rock And Roll Music (2013 Stereo Mix) Dance, Dance, Dance (2021 Stereo Mix) Barbara Ann (2021 Stereo Mix) Do You Wanna Dance? (2021 Stereo Mix) Heroes And Villains (2017 Stereo Mix) Good Timin' Kokomo Do It Again (2021 Stereo Mix) Wild Honey (2021 Stereo Mix) Darlin' (2021 Stereo Mix) I Can Hear Music Good Vibrations (2021 Stereo Mix) Disc 2: All Summer Long (2012 Stereo Mix) Good To My Baby (2021 Stereo Mix) This Whole World All I Wanna Do Disney Girls (1957) Kiss Me, Baby (2012 Stereo Mix) Let The Wind Blow (2017 Stereo Mix) Forever Sail On, Sailor Long Promised Road Cotton Fields (2021 Stereo Mix) Pom Pom Play Girl Wind Chimes (Smile Version) I Went To Sleep Farmer's Daughter Let Us Go On This Way (2021 Mix) You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone (2021 Mix) The Night Was So Young Marcella (2021 Mix) You're So Good To Me (2012 Stereo Mix) Aren't You Glad (2017 Stereo Mix) Baby Blue (2021 Mix) It's About Time Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock) [2021 Stereo Mix] Surf's Up Disc 3: Add Some Music To Your Day (Remastered 2000) It's OK (Alternate Mix) Goin' On San Miguel (2021 Mix) The Warmth Of The Sun (2021 Mix) Everyone's In Love With You (Remastered 2000) All This Is That (2012 Remaster) California Saga (2012 Remaster) Feel Flows Wendy (2013 Stereo Mix) Girl Don't Tell Me (2012 Stereo Extraction Mix) Let Him Run Wild (Remastered 2001) All I Want To Do (Alternate Take / 2021 Mix) Susie Cincinnati (2021 Mix) Vegetables (Stereo/Remastered 2001) Time To Get Alone Where I Belong (Remastered 2000) I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times (Stereo) Little Bird 'Til I Die (Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again (2019 Mix) Friends Devoted To You (Party! Sessions Mix) Can't Wait Too Long (2021 Mix) California' Feelin' (2021 Mix) Edited after a full English tracklist was released. Yes the tagging is still an absolute mess like most beach boys product. Personally, I LOVE this tracklist. It really offers an eclectic mix of songs that reflects the versatility of the Beach Boys' catalogue - and the inclusion of the mighty Where I Belong on a Beach Boys comp has been long overdue. However.... if the set has the same sort of sound quality/mastering as heard on the Feel Flows box then, quite frankly, it will all be for nothing. Can we PLEASE not have vocals that have been compressed-to-death on this release, Mark/Alan? The Beach Boys are supposed to sound warm and welcoming, not digital and processed.

It's nice to see that there's going to be a compilation out there that goes well beyond the AM radio oldies. It's weird...in a way, it's not really meant for die-hard fans, but who among casual listeners will pony up for a set this big?
I'm always wary of stereo mixes made from songs whose multitracks don't exist. The "extraction" mixes are pretty...well, I'm not gonna sugar-coat it: bad. They sound like basically someone is constantly moving the balance control knob back and forth. And why do they feel they need to do yet even more remixing? Are they telling us that the previous sixty dozen mixes of the same songs are bad, and they're going to keep trying until they get it right??
It's almost kind of arrogant isn't it? I mean, this is the Beach Boys after all. Brian Wilson is one of the greatest pop/rock producers of all time, and Dennis and Carl weren't too shabby either. But it seems some people think they need to keep tinkering in order to improve the work of the Wilsons. They ruined Sunflower with that God-awful '2019 remaster'.

Is this genuine??? Surely not??? It just sounds awful. AWFUL!! I don't get it. Mark and Alan's pre-Feel Flows archive work always sounded superb. What has gone wrong? They have developed this bizarre compulsion to suck all the life out of everything with this appalling compressed-to-death sound. I really can't believe how bad this version of Marcella sounds. What on earth are they thinking??

A lot of liberties have been taken as if it has been more, say “Reimagined”.

My thoughts exactly. You don't even have to go back that far. I mean, the Sunshine Tomorrow set sounded gorgeous. The Wake the World and I Can Hear Music albums sounded just fine. Then along came Feel Flows and suddenly everything sounded compressed and unpleasant. Suddenly I'm no longer filled with excitement re CATP/Holland set and am instead filled with a sense of impending dread. Have we really waited all these years for a clean Carry Me Home and it's going to arrive sounding digital and smothered in excessive treble? I just hope someone is keeping Mark's fingers of the 'echo button' when it comes to Dennis's vocals.

Upon closer inspection, it seems that this Marcella mix isn't by Mark and Alan, it's by someone called Rick Bartlett. So, presumably, it's not official. And thank God for that!

It sounds like The Beach Boys filled a 64-track tape with a lot of alternate vocals so they could decide what to include and what to leave out during the final mix. They chose wisely. This new mix sounds to me like they just included everything.
With 28 more 2021 remixes on this set, it should be interesting to say the least.
