From The Beach Boys website: "The new expanded Sounds of Summer collection boasts 24 new mixes including two first-time stereo mixes, plus 22 new-and-improved stereo mixes, which in some cases feature the latest in digital stereo extraction technology, allowing for the team to separate the original mono backing tracks for the first time. The project features a total of 80 newly remastered tracks that span early hits to deeper fan-favorites from Surfin’ Safari through Still Cruisin’. Arriving June 17, the expanded edition of Sounds Of Summer will be available in a variety of formats, including digital, a 3CD softpack, and a Super Deluxe Edition 6LP vinyl boxed set on 180-gram black vinyl in two options – a standard set or a numbered, limited edition version featuring a rainbow foil slipcase and four collectible lithographs. The new stereo mix of "Good Vibrations" is available to stream and download now." I am NOT buying this set. I am NOT buying this set. I am NOT buying this set. I am NOT buying this set.......

It's nice to see that there's going to be a compilation out there that goes well beyond the AM radio oldies. It's weird...in a way, it's not really meant for die-hard fans, but who among casual listeners will pony up for a set this big?
I'm always wary of stereo mixes made from songs whose multitracks don't exist. The "extraction" mixes are pretty...well, I'm not gonna sugar-coat it: bad. They sound like basically someone is constantly moving the balance control knob back and forth. And why do they feel they need to do yet even more remixing? Are they telling us that the previous sixty dozen mixes of the same songs are bad, and they're going to keep trying until they get it right??

I like the remixes. Gives me a reason to care. If this was just a compilation with the same mixes that have always existed, I would call it a rip off.

Also from the press release: “Additionally, all 30 tracks on disc 1 of Sounds Of Summer have been mixed in immersive Dolby Atmos, joining the group’s Christmas Album which was mixed in spatial audio and released this past holiday season, and continuing the initiative to present the group’s catalog in the enveloping and exciting new audio format.” Very excited for this

I am buying this set. I am buying this set. I am buying this set.
If I’m going to buy the same songs for the tenth time, let them be remixes.
I also greatly appreciate that they are preparing two box sets. This one with all previously released material to appeal to people who don’t already have these (whoever those people are!), and another with a deep dive of unreleased material (So Tough and Holland) - rather than just one box set that mixes a handful of rarities in with previously released material, as is traditionally done with box sets.

One of the few ways bands make music now is to sell these physical vinyls (and cassettes, CDs and so on) to existing owners of these songs. The limited edition 6LP only confirms it further.

the 24 new mixes are: I Get Around (2021 Stereo Mix) Surfin' Safari (2021 Stereo Mix) Surfin' U.S.A. (2021 Stereo Mix) Surfer Girl (2021 Stereo Mix) Don't Worry Baby (2021 Stereo Mix) Shut Down (2021 Stereo Mix) Help Me Rhonda (2021 Stereo Mix) When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) [2021 Stereo Mix] In My Room (2021 Stereo Mix) Dance, Dance, Dance (2021 Stereo Mix) Barbara Ann (2021 Stereo Mix) Do You Wanna Dance? (2021 Stereo Mix) Do It Again (2021 Stereo Mix) Wild Honey (2021 Stereo Mix) Darlin' (2021 Stereo Mix) Good Vibrations (2021 Stereo Mix) Let Us Go On This Way (2021 Mix) You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone (2021 Mix) Marcella (2021 Mix) Baby Blue (2021 Mix) Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock) [2021 Stereo Mix] The Warmth Of The Sun (2021 Mix) Can't Wait Too Long (2021 Mix) California' Feelin' (2021 Mix) The two New stereo tracks that were only previously available in Mono are “Surfin’ Safari” and “Do You Like Worms.” There’s also: All I Want To Do (Alternate Take / 2021 Mix) For some reason they don’t seem to count this as one of the new remixes, probably because it’s an alt take, but I guess there’s technically 25 remixes on the set.

Yikes. The one set is over $200?! Maybe I'll wait until it comes down in price. :-)

Is there any rhyme or reason anyone can figure out to the tracklisting?

Looks like a cool lineup of tracks. I'm kinda getting sick of "Pom Pom Playgirl", though. It's time to give "No Go Showboat" and "This Car of Mine" the spotlight. I'm curious why there was no remix of the "Friends" tracks. Based on the instrumental mixes on the '68 set, these tracks would be THE BOMB with a fresh remix. Is "Do You Like Worms" officially retitled? Sad to see it go. The young people with their damn "Plymouth Rock" and "Prayer/Gee" will never understand the pain it causes. This is the first digital release of "Wind Chimes" in stereo, yes? Exclusive to Smile vinyl, unless I am forgetting. Do the Smile tracks bear the 1966/1993 date because they were assembled in '93? Seems confusing. They wouldn't have been mixed in '93 if these are stereo remixes, right? They sure do know how to dangle the carrot. Smile tracks means I buy. They got me again. But I ain't spending $200 on 6LPs. That much is for sure. 4 LP "Feel Flows" was only $80.

Is there any rhyme or reason anyone can figure out to the tracklisting? Well the first disc is just the original sounds of summer. Discs 2 and 3 Seem to be a mix of fan favorites, band favorites, and compiler favorites. Mark Linett recently said that “Pom Pom Play Girl” and “San Miguel” are two of his favorites, so that could explain their inclusion. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that “Everyone’s In Love With You” was included at the insistence of one Michael Edward love. Same with Susie Cincinnati but with Al.

Heh. Last time around there were boiling pools of hatred BECAUSE OF the remixes. "THEY'RE FORCING ME TO BUY THE SAME STUFF OVER AND OVER!! WAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!"
Just listened to the new "Good Vibrations" over headphones. It sounds like it's actually not an extraction mix, but just a play-it-safe mix from the multitracks: all vocals center, instruments panned. It's not the most exciting thing in the world, but it's less harsh on the ears than the previous mix, which was an extraction.

Green - appears to be an insert that makes it "exclusive" and adds a buck to the six-record set
Red - But somehow that same "exclusive" thing adds $7 to the two-record set...

They're extracted vocals from the mono mix synced to a backing track mixed from the multitracks, besides the organ bridge, which uses the single-tracked vocals that exist on a partial safety copy multi as opposed to an isolation.

The vocals are extracted because most of them don’t exist anymore completely isolated. It’s really just a testament to how amazing extraction technology has gotten over the past decade or so. Still not amazing at extracting instruments, but when it comes to vocals it has dramatically improved. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the new do you wanna dance and I get around mix use their original double tracked vocals through extraction, something that was far from ideal in 2012. Also, with streaming services you don’t have to purchase the same tracks over and over again. If you just want the new mixes, you can just play the new mixes. In fact with the spatial audio atmos mix, that’s exclusive to streaming services. That’s not going to exist on a vinyl or a CD.

Okay, but will they at least be *downloadable* so that we don't have to rely on a steady Internet connection to listen?

Yes most streaming services support downloads

So, why only ATMOS on CD 1 tracks, then? I have no idea how ATMOS works, but why on disc 1 songs if not not on the CD itself?

Why no room for the "That's Why God Made the Radio" singles?

Why no room for the "That's Why God Made the Radio" singles? Christ, that is one helluva good point. Is 2012 to be written off, like Stars & Stripes and Summer in Paradise?

Makes no sense to me, they could have included 1 track from SIP and a few from TWGMTR. It doesn't matter, I am not buying this. I will save my money for the CATPST & Holland Box.

Why no room for the "That's Why God Made the Radio" singles? One would do - instead of Pom Pom Play Girl - or Everyone's in Love...
