Just gave the new remix of ”Marcella” another listen on Apple Music just to remind myself how bad it actually is. There’s absolutely no room to breathe. It’s unbelievably cluttered. Zero dynamics. I believe the word I’m looking for is ”fatiguing”. I get tired listening to the new mix. I have no problem with the mix itself but the heavy processing beggars belief.
It sounds like each track has been compressed to death and then they compressed the entire stereo master even more. I hear digital clipping and distortion throughout the entire song. The zither in the intro sounds like it’s about to choke when the rest of the backing track kicks in and there are even audible drop outs. How could anyone let this through QC?
I remember when I was a teenager and first used a DAW. I loved spending hours just messing about with all of the plugins, often using extreme settings just to fuck up the sounds. The drums on the new mix of Marcella sounds EXACTLY like something I did for fun in a simple DAW when I was a kid and a complete noob.
I also remember hearing Iggy’s 1997 CD remix of ”Raw Power” as a wee child. I got a headache from listening to it but couldn’t put my finger on why. Years later I understood a bit more about audio and remastering and the reason it sounded so bad was digital brickwall limiting, a fairly new thing at that time. I believe that disc was (and maybe still is) one of the loudest CDs ever released.
I don’t want the Beach Boys to sound like the Stooges. It’s like we’ve gone back 25 years to the dawn of the loudness wars…

Yes, Murry was there for many; maybe most of the early recording sessions. He was intimately involved with the recording process. Chuck Britz even wired up a special control board for Murry to use at Western. Has to be noted that Murry contributed both positively and negatively to the recordings (in the opinions of Brian and Chuck). Obviously, there is no real comparison between Howie and Murry. I just think it's amusing that two figures in this band's history have a seeming fixation on treble. I believe Howie has good intentions and is doing a lot of positive, yet thankless work. I just don't know if he's really a guy who understands how to emphasize what continues to make the Beach Boys unique, special, and appealing to popular culture. As fans, we know what it is: that sui generis sense of youth, folly, and naiveté that few other artists have captured, or have even wanted to capture(!!). Howie comes across like a guy who wants to live happily ever after in the year 1975 - a world before punk, new wave, alternative, indie, and songwriters like Jonathan Richman and Daniel Johnston. I would wager that even terms like "rockism" and "hyperpop" have probably never entered his radar. Because he seems overly preoccupied with Certified Classic Rock Bands™, I doubt Howie cares for bands like the Ramones, Sparks and Modern Lovers. These are bands that produced a lot of "mom and dad and high school" songs, but still remain hugely influential today, with intense cult followings. (Always keep in mind the fact that a member of Sparks engineered Beach Boys Love You, and that a member of the Modern Lovers co-wrote/co-produced several albums' worth of material with Brian in the '80s and '90s.) And that's fine. Howie is entitled to his opinions. But what does it mean for the chances of an expanded reissue of Love You? I don't know. What I do know is that I'm not looking forward to the ear-strain I must endure in order to listen to a "new" Beach Boys song. A crisis that could have been averted if one of the comp engineers had simply clicked the DAW's "bypass" button.

Man. Such vitriol. That's what what my interview talking about The Beach Boys inspired? THAT'S the take-away from, what, 40 minutes talking about The Beach Boys? All this anger. All this pain. Jesus. Going out to play with my kids then dinner with my wife. You guys should do the same. Life's short. Stop buggin' about records. Howie, don't give me that. I work my butt off Monday to Friday to feed my family. The last thing I need is to be greeted by this. On my weekends, perusing Beach Boy message boards is something of a recreational activity for me - a form of leisure, even - I'm sure most would agree. Is there something wrong with engaging in online discussion about one's favorite band? I'd like to think not, otherwise I wouldn't find you here. Rather than acknowledging any of the legitimate criticisms others have put forward, you have instead chosen to ignore it, disregard it, and equate it to "vitriol." Downright embarrassing. Sure, go out and play... keep running from your problems like you always have. Also - kindly refrain from using the Lord's name in vain. It's very unprofessional. Agree! Great first post. I was surprised to realize how patronizing that post was. Kind of like biting the hand that feeds you. Welcome to the board!🙂

I really don't understand what all those complains are about... seriously, this is only a one more compilation, with songs that everyone of us have about 40 times each. No new or unreleased material. None of us need to buy it. I love these mixes, I'll buy it. Those who don't love them, keep listening to the classic mixes. All the things I read here makes me afraid. It makes me think of a sect of dangerous crazy people, who want everybody thinks the same and don't want other people are able to listen what they think is not good for them. That's a pitty, and all this for only one more compilation of songs that everybody, here have in their original mixes. What a crazy discussion, what a hate I can feel here. So sad, for a so beautiful music...

I am really happy that some fans love the new sonics, but as you can see, there are many here who are not so enamored with those sounds. If you think we are some kind of crazy sect of dangerous people, then maybe you are in the wrong place.

What I do hate to see is what has happened to the standard the bands music should be held to. And I hate to see my favorite Beach Boys song as a mess, it hurts to listen to it. I have no hate for Howie or Mark or anyone. I’m disappointed sure, but there’s always time to turn things around and fix the issues before us. No hate, just love and respect for the music that I and many others don’t want to see tarnished.

It makes me think of a sect of dangerous crazy people, who want everybody thinks the same and don't want other people are able to listen what they think is not good for them. I know opinions on this thread are based on a few SOS preview 'teaser' tracks. They're also based on some of the Feel Flows tracks released in the recent past. The final assessment on the new Sounds of Summer 2022 set will be made next week and the individual tracks will be evaluated. Either you'll like some or all of the mixes or you won't. As far as I can see, nobody's crazy or dangerous here. It's a free country and everyone is entitled to their opinions and nobody is forcing you to agree with them. Most of the opinions here have been honest and are backed up with good reasoning.

The original music is available anywhere. It's written on the compilation that they are 2021 mixes. Who hells are you to decide what anyboddy can, or can't do with Beach Boys music. Only members of the band can do this. What a strange way of thinking. If it hurts you, don't listen to it! Let people who are intereted to listen to them a new way, do it. Let me tell you one thing. After having listening Marcella this way, you won't hear the classic mix anymore the same way. Because this mix, will reveal you things you never heard before in the song, and then, you will here them in the classic mix too, very far away, but you'll hear it,because you ear will be ready to hear them. So thanks to those mixes.

A remix is not a remaster. Just remember this. It doesn't mean the same thing at all.

So sad, for a so beautiful music... Definitely no hate from me either. They have every right to remix, remaster and/or even add auto tune and a thumping house beat to every song in the catalogue. I’m not planning on buying SoS and will shut up about the poor sound quality from now on. I’m just afraid that the upcoming CATP/Holland set will sound just as poor as this set but it is what it is. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best!

Lately though, there have also been a few misses, as well. We come here as a brotherhood and sisterhood to discuss this stuff. If you love the new mixes, please tell us why, instead of complaining about the the folks who have articulated their reasons why they dislike it.

That's a pitty, and all this for only one more compilation of songs that everybody, here have in their original mixes. What a crazy discussion, what a hate I can feel here. So sad, for a so beautiful music... Its not😑 If it were simply just another greatest hits compilation sounding bad, no one would really care. The beach boys have put out all sorts of greatest hits compilations over the years, of extreme varying quality, some sounding absolutely fantastic and Some downright unlistenable. The problem is that the sound quality of the actual new music that we’ve never gotten to here before or only have in terrible bootleg quality seems to be getting worse and worse, and this greatest hits compilation is just another example of the downgrade in Quality the groups catalog seems to have gone in the past four years or so. If you like it, that’s cool. Clearly someone likes it, someone at the label, the people working on it, clearly they like it. But from my point of view, as a member of this message board, other message boards, the Hoffman board, a member of several Beach boys discord servers, different Reddit pages, and a Random lurker in different Beach Boys Facebook groups (can you tell I like this band?), the reception has been overwhelmingly negative to the sound quality. Obviously at this point it’s just kicking a dead horse, BRI has obviously seen the complaints and criticism, it’s just a matter of waiting for the next archive release to see if they truly care. Also, simply saying “it’s Howie’s fault or it’s Linett’s fault” is far from the truth, politics and maneuvering on all sides is obviously involved to keep everyone satisfied when it comes to these sets. I just hope next time they focus more on the satisfaction of the actual fans, the fans who stay up till midnight on release day to hear new things, the fans who intently comb through every alternate mix to hear every note that’s new. My mind and ears are always opened and ready for cool stuff, I like remixes, alt mixes, I just want them to sound good. And with that being said I think I’m all Beach Boys sound quality discussioned out for a while, I guess we’ll see what Friday brings. My hopes are high, my expectations are low, let’s see if these teasers are exceptions or the norm

Isn’t that what Howie was hired to do? He is a writer. He writes about how great Brian Wilson is, how great the band is and how great the music is, but advocates for remixing that wonderful, gorgeous music with terrible sonics. Howie’s just a journalist dude trying to get the Beach boys to be cool. Howie asked a rhetorical question when he guested on the Shadows in the Limelight podcast: "Who the fuck am I?" It was a good question! He's described online as an "acclaimed music writer." However, I can't unearth a single article he's had published in a journal or newspaper before Feel Flows. He's written about the Who and the Beach Boys, but that seems to just be liner notes and some promotional fluff pieces for magazines (most notably one or two articles about Feel Flows). Does he have anything published on sites like PopMatters, Pitchfork, Billboard, Stylus, The Ringer, Consequence of Sound, Brooklyn Vegan, or Stereogum? Not that I can see. His prior engagements include co-hosting a Beatles podcast for 30-some episodes with fewer than ~1000 listeners. His Twitter has 136 followers. Howie's not really a journalist. He's a passionate fan, just like us, but also a PR guy with connections and, unfortunately, some controversial opinions and questionable room-reading skills. He's paid to generate excitement and hype. Nothing wrong with that, except when he does the exact opposite, and angers fans by refusing to engage with a contentious, yet valid issue (poor mixing). EDIT: His bio on podsearch.com/listing/fabcast.html has more info: To be an NYC classic rock radio producer, do you have to listen to the same Fleetwood Mac and Boz Scaggs songs thousands of times every day? Now that's a job I don't envy...

I love it because I always thought that Marcella was too flat and that the potential of the song was killed by the original mix. Just like imagining Little Honda without its crazy guitar. The only thing I agree, is that they should have called them "alternate". Do you thing the multiples alternates mixes we had on previous compilation of "break away", "little girl I once knew" or "time to get alone". Were originaly done by the Beach Boys. No. Mark linet played with the console, and created new versions, that didn't respect the original songs. Where were the complains? It's the same thing. All those alternates make me discover arrangements and instruments that are hidden behind other in the original mixes, and after having heard them, I'm really able to dicern them on the old mixes. That was the same effect with the sessions, at the time, on the SOT collection. It educate my ear to hear hidden things, and I love it. And... don't forget... the original mixes are still findable everywhere.

You are right though, they should have tacked on (Alt Take) to the title. I find this new mix fascinating. Lots of stuff going on inside the song. It sounds sped up. A bit too much reverb. It pulsates, which is weird. And it is really compressed. For most, what they don’t like are the sonic issues of this remix.

And I’ll tell you one thing as well, after hearing this Marcella mix I felt as if I’d have to check a mirror to make sure my ears weren’t bleeding. That’s the way it was for me, happy to hear it wasn’t that way for you. My ears were ready for a good new remix of my favorite Beach Boys song, that I did not get. I’ll stick to the original mix for now.

Marcella (2021) is an alternate take or remix, to me. Because it is SO DIFFERENT, it will never replace the original. Believe me, I want to like very thing that is released and for most part, I have. Mark & Alan have done a truly magnificent job on the catalog and archives. Lately though, there have also been a few misses, as well. We come here as a brotherhood and sisterhood to discuss this stuff. If you love the new mixes, please tell us why, instead of complaining about the the folks who have articulated their reasons why they dislike it. Like the long version of till I die will never replace the original. But I love it. My very favorite version as well, but done by Steve Desper who is a master of analog sound. It is deep bass, and hypnotic. Somehow with his expertise, he enhanced the recording.

If you're going to remix a song because the multi-track contains previously unheard vocals or instruments, and you want to expose them - two things should be kept in mind. One is, as other people have posted, you should denote the mix as alternate. Just saying "2021 mix" is not enough to warn people that this is a radical new mix with unheard elements. Secondly, the new mix should sound like it was mixed that way on purpose, as if it could have been an original mix. For example, maybe there was an alternate background vocal or instrumental solo that, or even an alternate lead vocal that you want people to hear. It doesn't mean that you should just add every single element that exists into one hodgepodge of sound.
