Never listened to the third one. The first two, however, are what made me a fan. My mom bought the first one for me to introduce me to the band. I listened immediately and was instantly hooked. I actually thought they were better than the Beatles (another group shed hooked me on) because of their voices and their attitude. As an adult, the "yeah, I'm a cool surfer, driving cars and chasing girls" image is pretty cheesy, but to a little kid it made them seem badass. The first comp became a staple every summer as we drove to the beach. It always made me happy and excited. At first, my favorite tracks were I Get Around and California Girls. Eventually, I came to love Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows the most. I always hated Barbara Ann. Never appreciated how complex GV truly was. The second comp we got a year or two later. I loved it too, but not as much. It was a softer, gentler, more vulnerable album. That doesn't appeal to a little kid as much, but as I grew it eventually surpassed the first comp. I loved Little Girl I Once Knew and Caroline No the most. Years later, when I heard of SMiLE, it blew my mind Heroes and Villains was supposed to be the centerpiece. I thought "Really? That? It's a good song, but not THAT great." I think it's a great comp. There are a million collections of their surf and car songs, but this peek at their more tender side is a lot rarer. It's great to have all of them in one place to show friends there was more to this band than Fun Fun Fun. An easy 10 for the first two.

10, 10, and 7 respectively. The first two volumes work very well as a 1960s retrospective, but the third volume really falls flat. No Dennis material? Beyond regrettable, and thankfully the Brother period is better represented on other compilations.

Kokomo stands out like a sore thumb on the first volume. They should have saved it for volume 3. I'm not thrilled with any of these as compilation albums. They all seem kind of random. Vol. 1 was easy - just pick out their biggest hits, and signature songs. Vol. 2 is more hit and miss. And what is is with the 80's BB's on the compilation albums? It's like they didn't exist, apart from Kokomo, California Dreamin', and Getcha Back. Someday someone should actually put some thought into putting together a good comp of 80's BB's tracks - It's Gettin' Late, Still Cruisin', Somewhere Near Japan, Where I Belong, Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue, and some of the songs that never made it onto a proper album like Chasin' the Sky, Happy Endings, and Runaway.

The good thing about these is that they made available the MONO single mixes of songs like FRIENDS. You couldn't find that anywhere else (unless you were able to get the 3 cd set of singles from Japan). Why Andrew S. pulled the wrong mix of FUN FUN FUN I will never understand. He did such a good job otherwise.

I DO like the track selection of the Japanese versions of the first two volumes. More tracks for one.

Even Bruce’s vocal is more clear. I don’t believe either mix is available anywhere else.

But the fade on BOTH is longer, with CG almost 10 seconds longer than the mono LP. Of course, when I brought up the fact that Vol. 1 used the mono LP mix of Fun Fun Fun instead of the single mix on Steve Hoffman's board, it did not go well for me LOL.
