Finishing it up as I write this review. For once, I agree with the consensus opinion. This album is f***ing amazing. Coming after '88 and Orange Crate Art, what a breath of fresh air! I'd even say it blows BWPS clear out of the water. In fact, it does right where BWPS got it so wrong, creating a great suite that flows well. It feels like real, honest Brianism as well, unlike a lot of his other solo material which had feelings of insincerity and an outside push to fit in with the trends. BWPS was conquering his fears and becoming reborn again as an artist, but I think this represents his true return to form and getting back on stage to deliver one last great masterpiece to the world.
The spoken word segments aren't THAT bad, though I can admittedly see them getting old on subsequent listens. That said, I do think the album would be better without them, so I dropped a point for that. They seem like the filler so derided in the very old Beach Boy albums.
Overall, I give it an 8. The last really genuine, timeless, innovative music Brian has done.

I'm giving That Lucky Old Sun 9/10. It's my favourite of Brian's solo albums. The songs are so good and he really seems to have put a great deal of himself into it. I don't mind the spoken narrative bits, it's kind of fun to hear him talking and I like the story he tells. The way the narrative pieces and the songs interweave to tell the whole story of his life, in a way, from the young fun years to the dark times to the liberation from that darkness into the sunlight, and then ties it together with what suspends him between this world and the next - his brothers.
While the album is strong from start to finish, most of the songs are even great outside of the context of the album. I'll take Morning Beat, Good Kind of Love, California Role, Oxygen to the Brain, Going Home and Southern California on their own any day of the week.

I think That Lucky Old Sun is easily Brian Wilson's best solo album. I'm giving it a nine. It's almost a ten, but I'm not a fan of the spoken word bits (though I like them better on the live DVD with the visuals).
Much like TWGMTR, this album to me goes from enjoyable to another level at the end with Midnight's Another Day (even if the chorus reminds me a lot of Ripples by Genesis), Goin Home, and Southern California.

We can't always agree, my friend, and we certainly don't agree on TLOS! Way back, a Capitol Board poster insisted I borrow this album from the local library because it was so good. I listened diligently to the whole thing (twice, to check I hadn't missed anything and to get my money's worth ) and could not for the life of me see what all the fuss was about. For me it was '88 and OCA that were the breath of fresh air. TLOS left me cold. It's hard to know what to award it. I think to be fair I'll go just one lower than the lowest score awarded so far (yours). Anything lower than that might be construed as flagrant misuse of my recently acquired Senior Member status.

Gave it a 9 - easily his best solo work - but the theme of the BB's history is always there. Spoken word is always fine by me.

There's a bit of "musical theatre" vibe I get from this that makes me prefer the less polished demos, but I still give it a 10.

7.5. This one is a step down from Imagination, but the righteous trilogy at the end of the record proves that, when pushed, Brian can still deliver. The middle kind of lags.

Figured I'd just copy my thoughts from the old Pet Sounds Forum:
First, what I said before I had ever been to Los Angeles:
And my comments about it after my L.A. trip:

Wow. I spun the vinyl for the first time since it first came out. (The vinyl version was actually released before the CD!)
I forgot how terrible it sounds on vinyl. They shouldn't have tried to cram so much music onto one album side.

My copy started getting serious clicks and pops after only 3 or 4 plays. I thought about buying another copy, but when I see them now, they're very pricey.

Related problem: when I got my first CD copy (European), it sounded like shit. Dunno why, but I ripped it to iTunes and Shazam ! it sounded fine. I can only think someone sent the download master over by mistake. The US CD was just dandy.
Best track: "Midnight's Another Day", by several light years. The demo version is definitive.

My copy of TLOS is the second worst sounding CD in my collection(the dubious honor of the number 1 goes to the new Who album). It's a real shqme, because the album itself is brilliant. I've said this many times before, but TLOS to me is the third in a "trilogy" of masterpieces . The others being Pet Sounds and Smile. I actually wish TLOS would have been Brian's last studio album. "Southern California" is a great way to end a brilliant beyond words career.

Midnight’s Another Day is awful sounding. I have rarely listened to it after the first few months of release. It ‘tis ashame.

No, I’m in New Jersey. Brian just seemed to be so up front in the mix.

I couldn't agree more with the people who think this is easily Brian's best solo album. It features his best singing after 1973 too.

I don't really get the hype around this album, it's way too cheesy for me but does have one amazing song, Midnight's Another Day is easily one of Brian's best songs he did solo, along with Love and Mercy, Let It Shine and Melt Away. Good Kind Of Love is not bad and Morning Beat is pretty cool but apart from that it's alright, not bad but not that good.

It's been awhile since I gave it a spin, but THAT LUCKY OLD SUN is my personal favorite of all Brian Wilson solo albums. Had the stars been aligned differently at the time, it could have been a terrific album from the group. "Midnight's Another Day" and "Goin' Home" are my favorite cuts. There is a voice in "Goin' Home" somewhere that sounds so very much like Al Jardine, even though we know it isn't.

I put this on for the first time in several years today, and the one song that truly blew me away was Southern California. I have always loved Midnight, but for some reason had never truly dove into Southern California and appreciated the beauty of this track. The backing vocals are magnificent, truly breathtaking. The ‘magic’ bit is a little less awesome, but still. Wow. Really phenomenal track. Has skyrocketed up my list of favorite BW solo songs.
