Anybody have a clue about the Red Dobro? Did it belong to The Beach Boys or brought in by someone else? Not an instrument really associated with The Beach Boys or Dennis.... Not often do you ever see a Dobro, in Red. Maybe the answer lies here, Rick. Search for dobro on that page, and see "Wild Situation" in particular.

Never saw this one! Great find. But it makes me feel sad knowing what happened shortly thereafter... You're right, this is a good find. I also share your sadness, particularly in light of how happy, healthy and together he seems in this video. Addiction is a horrible disease. Yep, this is a great clip and Dennis just comes across as such a regular guy. Such a shame how things ended up. Interesting re the solo tour conversation and I think I heard him suggesting that Carl would have been on the tour. Was that a real prospect? I'm not sure how likely that would have been given the group dynamics .... would have made a great show though!

The Stebbins bio goes into some detail on the aborted tour and suggests that its cancellation was caused by an ultimatum by the band-who felt threatened by it. This was of course during a very acrimonious period when the band threatened to break up altogether anyways. A very stressful period-which probably had some affect on Dennis’s rapid decline after that.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but Anya Taylor-Joy shares how The Beach Boys were responsible for her career (the story starts at 1:46).

Just came across this… Long Promised Road “video” that seems to use a different mix/take/version of the song. Can anyone steer towards the source please?

Looking through a list of tracks that a kind ex-Capitol Board poster burnt for me years ago, I discovered one I'd called "God Only Knows (BW/Macca; Adopt-A-Minefield 2002)". And here it is. According to the YouTube blurb, it's from "The 2nd Annual Adopt-A-Minefield Benefit Gala / Live at Century Plaza Hotel, LA (September 18, 2002)":

This is absolutely compelling in so many different ways in part because Dennis is so thoughtful and has such a quietude and Charisma about him which completely overwhelms the interviewer who is doing the best he can in the presence of forces and powers and feelings that transcend mere conversation and informational discourse.

I mentioned this a couple weeks ago in a now well-downstream thread about "Mess of Help"...it has "resurfaced" somewhat mysteriously and is (IMO) well worth a listen. It appears to be a stitch-together of the recent remix and the instrumental track to create a nearly seven-minute extended version that has two complete run-throughs of the track, winding up with a trippy rendition of the tag section with the backing vocals reinserted with some "post-psychedelic" distortion added...if you like it, you may want to grab it in case it gets kiboshed!

Poking around Smiley last night, I discovered this curious video. Does it mean anything to anyone here? I think it’ll be one of Billy Hinsche’s films of early 70s touring shenanigans, and it’s great to see! Even a very brief glimpse of Carl holding Dennis’s chair for a second or two. Not something I could watch repeatedly, but I’m sure someone’s mother would have loved to have seen it! Very pleasant soundtrack by Ed Carter too.

Yes, "The Match" is from Billy Hinsche's 1974 video.

I thought there was a BB songs in movies thread, but I couldn't find it. The instrumental "Pet Sounds" song is in the 3rd season of the Netflix show Dead to Me.

Something a little 'rare' and 'intriguing'.... to me at least. Brian performing with The Beach Boys, audio only folks.... Seems to be an audience recording, you'll have to use your imagination. From 1995, and Brian doing 'Don't Worry Baby' in the original key. From 17:56 in. It's not perfect, but he is really trying to sing his heart out. I love this stuff!
