Hello to EH Board, former SS member who believed/believes that more than one Beach Boys message board membership shouldn't be necessary... so now I'll join here. I posted steadily, though not terribly often, at Smiley for the past few years under a different handle. Usually commented on matters that were of interest to me but not necessarily that interesting (so it seemed) to other commenting members. I never had problems with anybody, although my opinions on the Beach Boys are unorthodox and can get a little salty from time to time.
I could never tell the difference between this board and Smiley Smile, other than that Smiley seemed to have more traffic.
If the Smiley Board is down for good, and if there really was a trove of valuable information stored there (was there, though, aside from the great news article archive provided by Steve Mayo and others?) then it points to the fact that the internet is not a good repository of information - just as cloud storage/streaming services cannot be relied upon to preserve historically significant music, films, etc. In fact, in my opinion, the state of public knowledge about the Beach Boys - reasonably accurate knowledge - has regressed, or gotten worse, and this is due in part to the belief that we can learn things by jumping on the internet rather than by reading more carefully written, researched and curated books. This is of course an old man's opinion, but books - paper that you can hold in your hand - is where it's at - or at least it should be that way.
Hoping that 2022 turns out to be good for new Brian Wilson/Beach Boys information, inquiry and analysis. The "California Saga" is a very deep hole (or ocean), and there's a lot going on there that hasn't really been discussed with the depth and care that it deserves.
Cheers

Welcome! So you know, we exist because many of us were banned from posting at SmileySmile. Makes it quite hard to post that way and so we created our own board. They are gone and we are left standing. Now, you know why there were two boards.

Hi Bookofb and welcome to the Endless Harmony Forum! You mentioned that the internet is not a good repository of information and that the state of public knowledge about the Beach Boys has regressed, or gotten worse, and that's caused by people jumping on the internet rather than by reading more carefully. 1. Yes, as we've discovered, not just with the Smiley board, but with other message boards and blogs that have gone down in the past, that valuable information has gone down and out with them. Unfortunately, these sites have not been backed up and/or the information and posts from experts and those within the Beach Boys circle have been lost for good. 2. I can't say that I completely agree with you on your second point. Some of the Beach Boys Authors and Historians and others "in the know" including (Steve Desper) have been posting here since the EH board opened in 2018. Good information can be obtained by using the Search function here. I think we do a very good job of comparing notes and dissecting and verifying information on this board. I also encourage you to check out the "Reference" section on this very site, in addition to AGD's and Ian's very valuable sites. Looking forward to reading your posts here, Bookofb! I assume the "b" stands for "Brian"? -Mike
