Well - I joined in August - but thought I’d finally introduce myself.
I am a fairly new Beach Boys Fan. It started with the purchase of Love and Mercy on iTunes in 2015. I had heard about Brian Wilson and his issues, so I thought it would be a good movie to watch while I was waiting for my laundry to wash and dry at the laundromat while scrounging to purchase a new washer and dryer. I was blown away by the music from Pet Sounds.
My life’s biggest regret - is that I actually saw The Beach Boys in concert in 1986 with the Moody Blues. I took a bathroom/drink break during “God Only Knows” because I had never heard it before. Now it’s my favorite song ever, by my favorite singer. I don’t even remember Carl. I do remember being blown away by Al’s vocals. Hey - I was 24. Wow, was I dumb. I was so into the Moody Blues then. The Beach Boys were just a distraction. I just knew their Surf and Car songs, which were fun, but didn’t really do much for me.
I loved music from a young age. My parents had albums from Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 and Dave Brubeck and I still love them to this day. They also had a 45 of “Yesterday” and “Act Naturally” and I fell in love with The Beatles. My first album purchase from my allowance was a Beatles Album. I also had a big thing for The Rolling Stones. Gosh I loved December’s Children (And Everybody’s).
In High School I had Bob Marley on 8 track in my parent’s 67 Chevy Camaro Convertible. My dad added the 8 track to the mono stereo car radio that was originally in the car he had purchased for $2700 in 1967. If I could only go back and realize what a cool car I got to drive in High School. My dad traded the 67 Camaro in for an 82 Berlinetta for my College Car. Bad decision.
The 80’s found me loving the Cars, R.E.M., the Police and Elvis Costello. I did get to see them all in concert, as well as The Rolling Stones. I got to blow up balloons for the Stones concert and we got a backstage tour and floor seats for that effort.
I got into grunge in the 90’s because I worked for a company in Redmond, Washington, and got to see Soundgarden in concert.
I really loved King Crimson and Yes just out of College. Still do. I do regret letting my Ex husband sell off all of my King Crimson vinyl.
So - we come to 2015 and I discovered Pet Sounds and wow, where had that been all my life? I always thought Abbey Road was the best album ever, and then… well my mind was blown. It is the album that relaxes me when I need distressing. Sunflower, Friends, 20/20, Surf’s Up - such amazing discoveries. Then - wow - the whole Dennis Wilson discography. Another mind blow.
So now I love collecting Beach Boys 45’s. I got my most wanted - the Dennis Wilson Demo of “Sound of Free”. I am waiting for my Candix 301 “Surfin” from Australia. Some day I hope to own the x and 331 versions of “Surfin”, but that will do for now.
I look forward to learning more about The Beach Boys here!
