Hi everyone!
My road here is paved with dated anecdotes and false starts. My intro to The Beach Boys was, awesomely, their appearance on Full House. I didn’t really get why Uncle Jesse was jamming with these old guys, but Kokomo was pretty. I loved the Barenaked Ladies in high school, in particular ‘Brian Wilson.’ That song intrigued me enough to take note of The Beach Boys: An American Family. Y’all, I watched it live as it aired. Perhaps that turned me off, I don’t know, because I spent the next two decades steadfastly ignoring them, even after my music theory class in college taught me of their interplay with the Beatles; after I “rediscovered” the Kinks and the Zombies and other musical brethren in my 20s; and after my future husband introduced me to Pet Sounds. So what was it that finally turned my head, after all these years?

Yep. And now here I am, loop-de-loop bonkers over Brian Wilson and to a lesser extent The Beach Boys at large. I know recent converts can be the most devout, but I have to admit my goal here is NOT to reinforce my belief that Brian Wilson’s a living angel who channeled the music of god hah. Rather, I’m looking to ground that belief in a more realistic sense of his talents and his limitations, music-wise and human-wise.
I spent some time perusing this forum as a guest before taking the plunge, and am in awe of the collective knowledge and dedication of folks here. Frankly it’s a bit intimidating to post here, and I’m not sure I will after this. So let me take this chance to thank you for all the info you’ve amassed and shared (here and on other sites I think some of you may frequent). In particular the References section and the photo thread have been very helpful to me.
Thank you again for all your hard work.
PS. If I may make one humble request re the photo thread: if you know the approximate date in which a photo was taken, it would be great to note it when posting. So much of Brian’s story is manifested in his physical appearance, but it’s fluctuated enough that the sequencing may not be immediately obvious to a newbie
