Released in 1966, Pet Sounds is consistently considered The Beach Boys' best album, with many publications listing it as one of the greatest albums of all time. While it was considered a relative disappointment in the sales department, Pet Sounds eventually reached platinum status in the US in addition to having multiple top 40 hits. Attachments:

There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said.
In the words of Billy Bob from Varsity Blues, "A Ten!!! A f**king ten!!!"

Don't know who Billy Bob is but it's 10. I praised SJB in the other thread, here would like to say that IKTAA is definite Top 3, its melody, to me, with chord/key changes, is the most interesting, as well as difficult. How did I find it? By playing each song at the piano. Yet, that being said, it's surprisingly catchy. Frankly, it's better than Sgt. Pepper; Brian's wall of sound isn't as samey as Phil Spector's.

The most 10-ish 10 there ever was! If another Voyager was ever sent out into space, a copy of Pet Sounds should be on it!

There's nothing to say that hasn't already been said. It's a beautiful album that means a lot to me personally the same way it means a lot to almost everyone who hears it.
It's one of if not the most timeless albums of all time. Kids from the 60s to the 00s and beyond know what Brian was talking about with this music.

This is the album that led me to the Beach Boys. I bought it after hearing "God Only Knows" on an oldies station. When I heard it on the radio, I had to pull over on the side of the road and hear it out. When I finally figured out who it was and what album it was on, I made my purchase. After hearing "Don't Talk" the first time, I knew that this was something really special. 10 out of 10. I have struggled to turn some people on to this album but I have had much better luck with So Tough and Love You so go figure.

10. Well, it's no Wishbone Ash, but it's alright, I guess.

To me, Pet Sounds is more than merely a collection of songs. It's an experience. Rarely do I ever consider any of the individual songs on their own--well, perhaps with the exception of God Only Knows, a masterpiece in its own right--as the album resonates with me as if I were watching a timeless classic movie in which every scene is consistently excellent and vital to the experience. Yes, I remember the debates about whether or not Sloop John B belonged on the album, but I always find myself anticipating that intro on the heels of Let's Go Away For Awhile. The album is perfect as is. Pet Sounds and Sunflower are my two favorite albums of all time. They both have quite different vibes, but they are both top shelf, Pet Sounds being arguably the highest quality rock album ever produced. Oh, and to state the obvious.....10.

That’s very interesting seeing that photo used for Pet Sounds. I’d never imagine that.

Here are Steve Hoffman's settings notes for the 2009 transfer for the AF Pet Sounds CD. Unlike his DCC CD, Steve added eq to several tracks but transfered others flat. He noted that he used the left channel only for his new transfer. But he was using his 1990 30 ips analog tape safety, so there shouldn't have been much of a master tape issue.

Never seen that before… a second ‘72 version? Was this a standalone as opposed to being bundled with CATP?

I always liked that both the 1972 and 1974 versions of this LP had the following notation on the covers and the labels (added I am told by Carl to answer questions that fans might ask):

When Pet Sounds came out in May, 1966, about six months later I realized that I had listened to the album in its entirety every single day since day one.

I give it an 8. I won’t win any friends by saying this but to me it has a bit too much of a tiki music (think Martin Denny etc.) influence in a lot of the instrumentation so I need to be in the mood for that before I give it a spin.

There is listening to Pet Sounds and then there is experiencing Pet Sounds. 100 years from now, when much of the music of today is long since forgotten, humanity will still be listening as not only does this album represent an era, it has a certain timelessness that is going to survive when other "pop music" does not. It puts Brian (and the Beach Boys) at a different level. The Bach of rock music. Always will. 10/10.
