Mark, good to see you tonight. Hi Alan.
Capitol/Universal has deleted all physical configurations of "The Smile Sessions." I know they're quick to eliminate physical product from their catalog these days. But geez, the most-fabled unreleased LP in pop music history didn't even get a decade in print. As the producer/engineer of these reissues, any comment? Any chance of re-release or somebody like Analogue Productions issuing the "Smile" stuff?
Also, the sonics (aside from the engineering aspects) of "Sunflower" and "Surf's Up" are so different. I've always wondered if "Sunflower" was recorded on Scotch recording tape and "Surf's Up" on Ampex.
Thanks for all your great work over the years.

Is it possible to one day see the release of the original sunflower era mixes of tracks like Big Sur, Help and Take a Load off Your Feet? Some of them are on the GV box I believe ...... None of those mixes he mentioned have been released

I still really miss Les Chan! I do too Alan, Hal here. Good times back then! Continued great work by you both and so many things to look forward to in the future. You really got the archival release ball rolling with the Endless Harmony soundtrack way back when, Alan, and kept it up with Hawthorne, the GV box, POB Legacy, Sunshine Tomorrow etc. and of course (drum roll) the Smile Sessions, until the projects took on a life and momentum of their own. You both have done such a service to the band and all the fans and I've gotten endless hours of enjoyment from it all. Thanks and take care Alan, hope to see you again someday soon!

Hey Mark and Alan -
Looking forward to FEEL FLOWS!
Question regarding "Fourth of July", and the "instrumental" version with backing vocals and what sounds like a 6-string bass playing the melody: Do the backing vocals exist on the multitrack, to where they could be flown into the version with Carl's rough lead?
Thanks!
Lee

What is the future of the rest of the Sunflower/ Surfs Up material that is still in the vaults? Will there be a digital release soon or maybe another opportunity to use it? Thank you for your guy's work on the Beach Boys catalogue as well This is my question too. For example, the released (master) version of Add Some Music To Your Day is take 8 - what’s the status of takes 1 - 7, and potentially any takes after take 8? It would be interesting to see a ‘complete sessions’-type release of this material, similar to what FTD does with their Elvis Presley complete session releases. That’s assuming of course that the material exists/is in the vaults.

Thanks! Lee I can answer this one! The only thing missing from the Fourth of July multitracks are Carl's and Jack's attempts at lead vocals. Those only exist on rough mixes now. Judging by the length of the new mix, I presume that this new mix will instead use the beautiful alternate ending heard on the "demo" version from Desper's study video. Would be safe to assume that the brass and backing vocals are flown onto the Carl version for the main body of the song.
