This sampler CD was sent out to radio stations, reviewers, record stores and other places to herald the two-fers in 1990. This CD was to be a first look at the new collection and also to show off the remastering that was done (finding lost masters etc.) It is one of the worst examples, in Beach Boys terms, of mastering done by the people at Capitol. Here is why I say that.
1.) Remember, this was to show off the new two-fers, not just collect tracks. As such, why would tracks 1,3 and 5 be in mono when they are in stereo on the very CDs this collection was highlighting?
2.) Track 4, Fun Fun Fun (Single Version) (Mono), is NOT the single version but the mono LP version from Shut Down Vol. 2.
3.) Track 10, Wouldn't It Be Nice (Mono). The rough mix version of this track had been used since the Capitol LP/CD MADE IN USA. They say they couldn't find ANY correct mono version of this song as it was missing from the master tape for PET SOUNDS. Mark Linett finally tracked down a copy of PS sent to New York for East Coast Pressings. By the way, CAPITOL DID HAVE THE CORRECT VERSION AROUND BUT WAS TOO LAZY TO DIG IT OUT. Anyway, that rediscovered version was used by Mark on the new PS CD. However, on this CD to highlight the two-fers, Capitol again pulled the rough mix from MADE IN USA instead of the one they were trying to promote. Another WTF moment from the people at the tower.
At least they used the correct version of Rhonda. On the accompanying collection THE ABSOLUTE BEST OF THE BEACH BOYS, put out to highlight the two-fers and the remastering, they used the LP version of Ronda. And they once again used the incorrect mix of WIBN.
EDIT: Just for grins, I went thru my BB GH CDs. That rough version of WIBN was used on the following collections:
